They've had great success in both, so when the May slot's taken (as it was by Marvel this year), they're just too afraid to try anything other than their back-up Spidey slot. Especially when June has developed a stigma of being less kind to the genre at the box office (SR, GL, BB, F4:RotSS) than the months surrounding it. A stigma I think is total BS (and I'm hoping MoS is about to shatter it), but numbers-wise, I can see Sony being afraid to move away from their "proven" slots.

But I agree, TASM could have benefited from having an extra week or 2 between its release and TDKR's.

TASM2 is back in the May sweet spot, but the power of that sweet spot might be undermined a bit by the April release of Cap 2 "officially" kicking off the summer, so I'm gonna predict that TASM2 makes more than TASM, but still falls short of a billion. It may very well cross that mark, though. I think a lot of that will depend on how much this installment looks like a new exciting story in the marketing, as TASM looking like a retread obviously dampened interest in it quite a bit. Electro could be a pretty visually eye-catching villain if done well, and one that doesn't resemble any of the Spidey villains put on film so far, so that could certainly help.

No one cares about Captain America 2. If it wasn't for the Avengers tie in I would have skipped Captain America 1 in the cinema and I pretty much watch every CBM.

But you didn't, for that reason. Cap 2 - which is the only solo venture to actually co-star another Avenger, on top of SHIELD itself being in the forefront as well - will be the most direct Avengers tie-in of them all. If you really think people won't be interested in that, then I don't know what else to say except that you and I live in two very different worlds.

Anyway, nowhere in my post did I mention Cap 2 being any kind of direct competition for TASM 2 in the first place, so this is hardly relevant. The only reason I even mentioned Cap 2 was to point out that the May Sweet Spot will not feature the first blockbuster of the season that year.

Its actually my most anticipated of the Phase 2 movies, maybe even more than Avengers 2.

I think no re-told origin will help ASM2 alot.

For many people that was the biggest strike against ASM.

Also there is a longer time difference between the Raimi films and this franchise which might equal more people giving ASM2 a fair chance.

I think 775-825 is the range. If the trailer is really exciting It could go higher.

People shouldn't forget ASM was released overseas during bad weather, major sporting events and Ice Age 4 plus a crappy release date in China.

Without those factors I think you can add 75 million to the worldwide gross.

Hey now, I care about Captain America 2.

But maybe it's because my favorite Marvel superhero is Captain America...

Ehh, I think TAS-M's biggest strike was an awful villain. While going through the origin again seems like it's the bigger mark on the reboot, I found the first hour to be the best and only went downhill once Lizard showed up. Poor villain, poor master plan. Hope to see something exciting with Electro though. It'll be a shame to see my three favorite Spidey villains turn into **** in a row(Venom, Lizard, Electro).

I like CA. I'm interested in the Winter Soldier. I'm interested in just about every comic book film, won't see them all in theaters though.

I like Captain America when he is part of the Avengers. Otherwise, I never took much interest in him.

While I agree that's the biggest strike against the film in terms of storytelling, I think Messiah meant the biggest strike in terms of getting people interested in the first place. People didn't see the trailers and say, "that villain's clearly poorly developed"; they saw the trailers and said, "didn't we just see this not too long ago?"

It will hit the billion mark, no origin, great actors "hey look its that black guy from the Western" or " the crazy kid from the Chronicle" and we see Spidey doing crazy 3D swinging and tons of action with Electro.

Yes it will.

From what i stated the lack of those things gives it a fighting chance.

Sequels mostly make more money than the first.

Cap 2 has a huge draw for me. The main reason being the mystery so far. They could really go any direction with it. I'm really excited to see Cap's role in the MCU's present day. I also was very pleasantly surprised with Cap 1.

Yeah, I'm more excited for Cap 2 than Thor 2 right now.

Each and every factor is in favour of the movie
Plus the competition from TDKR and TA doesnt simply mean direct box office competition, the 2movies greatly diminishedthe hype of the movie, and hype matters a lot

Firstly the Batman series is done and TA isnt coming out till 2015 which means spidey will gain back a lot of fans
Secondly DOFP and wintersoldier are minuscle in terms of competition compared to frecken TA and TDKR,plus they arent releasing withing a 2 month radius
Thirdly, the origin is done away with which means that basically the whole movie will be new to the audience instead of an hour of dejavu, and every second negative reviewer gave it a negative review partly because of deja vu,which is why a lot of audience also refrained from watching the movie
Fourtly,The origin is out of the way and the tone is set, meaning that Webbcan finally do his thing and create the movie he wants, the cast so far looks great

If the movie is good enough to get above 80% on RT,its a billion easy.
If it is only as good as TASM or awee bit worse then it will probably be about 800m

Even thought CapAm was better recieved, but the general audience enjoyed Thor and IM2 better.CapAm was a really dull movie imo.IM2 and thor had a lot of fun moments

At present I would count CapAm as Marvel's weakest character,I would worry if TASM2 would be facing The dark world or IM3 but CapAm is not much competition

Captain America: The First Avenger made me like Cap much more than I did before when I didn't care about the character at all.

I think ASM2 will earn more at the box office than ASM, but not by far. People are still divided about the reboot, the final film didn't change that. Even though I love ASM, it's not really a success critically. It seems like it's one of those films that aren't generally considered bad (I'd say it's mostly considered a 'good' movie), but it's forgotten by many of the GA already.

Just look at the top lists of the films of 2012. It's nowhere to be seen, and from what I've seen it's not mentioned as one of the 'bad' films very often either.

I think people will be excited to watch CA:TWS and other Marvel films now after the huge success of The Avengers, since people want to see what happens next and what might build up to The Avengers 2.

As Anno said, I think people felt Lizard was a pretty weak villain (even though I enjoyed him despite the loss of potential). I think what people really liked about TASM was rather the relationships and the heart and that's great. Many people will watch TASM2 to follow the story of Peter and Gwen. But to become a bigger success it needs to have an exciting villain as well.

I really hope Electro ends up to be a success. Sony really needs some heavy marketing of him now to show that he's to count with. Show some evil deeds, that he's ready to kill and that he's a messed up person.

Now, if the film ends with Green Goblin killing Gwen in a cliffhanger...then I'm pretty sure ASM3 will be a huge success box office wise!
