Am I the only one not on the gushing TDK Returns bandwagon?

I like it plenty, but 'masterpiece' is pushing it. Deep, ground-breaking, thought-provoking for it's time? Yes. Flawless? Far from. In my opinion.

Also, I thought the Year One animated film was pretty good. Not perfect, but most of my issues lay with things like line delivery and accuracy to the visual power of the source material - both problems I also had with TDK Returns.

In my experience, there has never been a 100% perfect Batman film, cartoon, or comic. There's always at least one weak link.

Nolan has the best record when it comes to weak links.

How is loving something all of a sudden being on a bandwagon?

Would only make sense if for the longest I said they were awful and then I started to say how much I like the two films, lol. For example...if right now I'm a fan of The Amazing Spider-Man

The bandwagon thing wasn't a serious accusation. I don't think everybody's being hipsters or anything, but I have only seen near-worship for it. I guess I'm just extremely picky about what I call a masterpiece. lol

Really? What was so horrible about it? In terms of animation and voice acting, I thought it was as well-executed an adaptation as TDK Returns was.

The story seemed to be complete enough. If I had my way, I'd have scrapped Miller's Catwoman though, but whatever. lol

I've only seen Part 1, but I have to agree. It's really good but I wouldn't call it as great as some are. There are things about it that cheapen or mute some of the incredible aspects of the book, like the internal monologue for example. That was something that wouldn't have worked if it was implemented as much as it was in the comic but annexing it altogether in the film removes some of the insight into the characters, not just with Bruce.

It felt like James Gordon: Year One more than anything else, lol. Didn't think that I'd get that kind of film.

The voice acting was great for the most part. However, Batman was horrible. That narration was one of the worst narrations from a professional voice actor I've ever heard.

I know Weller is cool and all, but his portrayal was generally pretty flat too. Both disappointed me, neither were 'horrible'.

I prefer Batman's voice acting in TDKR by a margin, and Gordon's in YO by a large margin.

That's how the book always felt to me, so I was expecting it. Also, love Gordon.

Bryan Cranston was perfection in Year One. I thought it was very good.

Dark Knight Returns was excellent.

Actually, I agree with you. I love the guy but the performance felt a bit flat to me. His Gordon voice in Y1 doesn't hold a candle to Oldman's.

The voice work in general was disappointing in Year One. They hire a good actress like Katee Sackhoff of Battlestar Galactica fame to play Sarah Essen and her vocal performance was so dull.

Agreed. Even with Cranston, the voice work wasn't that great.

I never saw her work in 24. But lets be honest, a lot of good actors have given a bad performance in their careers.

Oldman is handily the best Gordon, even though I like Cranston.

He was flatter than I'd have liked (was this his first voice acting job?), but I prefer him to TDK Returns' Gordon.

And, Kane, thanks a lot for reminding me of probably my least favorite moment in Rises. lol

I like the books a lot, but they're not perfect either.

Miller's Catwoman is something I'd have removed entirely from both animated adaptations. Spend that screentime on making sure other, more worthy things were properly fleshed out.
