Yeah, I can see why it wasn't kept. Even though it does fit with the theme of "vengeance", it's way too out of character for John. He almost seems a little too insane. Cruel, even. He would never kill someone like that unless he had a reason for it (i.e.-- killing Hans Gruber at the end of Die Hard, because Hans was going to kill Holly).

Agreed, it was more like something you could see Craig's Bond doing, it was too ruthless for McClane who kills when he needs to but is not a cold blooded killer.

Nothing beats 3's finale with John laughing at the flaming ruins of Gruber's chopper. No fake-ass rant in 4 ever managed to capture the character again. Die Hard is not Bruce Willis, it's Bruce Willis AND John McTiernan.

I just hope it's going to be better than Live Free or Die Hard. If it's on par even with Die Hard 2, I'll walk away from the theater a happy man.
