What do you like/don't like about the Reboot universe?

I don't mind any changes at all after Nero shows up, but one of my biggest gripes withe the reboot is that the USS Kelvin doesn't look anything like TOS. I'm okay "updating" for the 21st century audiences, but it should LOOK a lot more like TOS. Right?

Also, the Kelvin only haven't 1 Warp Nacelle. Err.

What do you got?

The one thing I hate about the remake is that Vulcan got destroyed & virtually makes Spock the sole survivor of his race.

I don't mind that so much. It makes me wonder if that means that Tuvok is gone or not in this universe.

I watched it again last night and there is a scene where Spock the younger says that Romulans are closely related to Vulcans, but this movie literally takes place in 2258, 7 years before the TOS. Kirk in the Prime Reality assumes command in 2265. 15 Years before that was "The Cage", so....does that mean that there was another Enterprise that was destroyed or decommed before the events of the movie that looks more like the traditional Enterprise from TOS?

My theories:

- According to Enterprise, some select Vulcans knew about their sister race long before the Federation "officially" met the Romulans face to face; the USS Kelvin's face-to-face confrontation with Nero may have jolted some of those old secrets loose in the alternate timeline; either that or the surviving Kelvin crew may have been able to learn more about the Romulans from their brief encounter than the audience saw

- Again, this is an offshoot of the "Nero changed everything" argument, but any number of things could have happened from that; the resources that would have gone to fast-tracking the construction and design of the first USS Enterprise might have been redirected as a result of that encounter, or maybe the engineer or project manager who would have managed the USS Enterprise's construction died on the Kelvin, thereby delaying the construction of the ship

I don't think so. I think that this is that Enterprise. However, because things turned out differently in this universe, it was built differently. Of course, the Enterprise in Star Trek: Enterprise looks similar at it is the most recent iteration of that ship I think (unless ST: Nemesis was after the series), so there's bound to be some design similarities with the art team.

Is it possible that First Contact altered history in the 21st Century that ST: Enterprise exists in an alternate dimension that changed TNG Timeline enough that Star Trek Countdown happened that altered the past enough that TOS changed? Like, a multiple loop?

I'm not sold on Simon Pegg as Scotty yet.

I also wasn't crazy about the destruction of Vulcan, and Spock/Uhura is kinda weird to me.

Yep. In the original movies Uhura had a relationship with Scotty.

I'm not interested in getting bogged down in minutiae. Oh, a ship doesn't look quite right? A fictional planet blew up? Who cares? The alternate universe concept is good enough for me to not only accept, but embrace the changes they make. Anything can happen now. That part is exciting!

What I don't care for though, and what I feel is much more important and worthy of discussion, is the underlying philosophy and approach taken with these new movies. Most of the previous Star Trek movies (and episodes) have some sort of message or question it poses. A moral quandary or social commentary. By comparison the reboot (and it appears its sequel as well) is just kind of a big, dumb popcorn movie. As if we need any more of those.

It's not even that I dislike the new movie, I do like it! I just dislike that it's apparently too much to ask to have one franchise that isn't completely brain dead. That doesn't try to appeal to the lowest common denominator by filling the screen with pointless action scenes with no sense of danger or consequence. Or romance scenes with zero emotional weight or even purpose. We live in a world now where everything has to either be dark and gritty, or overly simplistic and easy to understand. Or both. I don't like that. It's cynical, it's dumb, it's motivated purely by greed, and that's not Star Trek.

I really did enjoy the reboot though. I promise.

I do completely agree with you Soapy. It doesn't ask big questions, at least the first in the rebooted series doesn't. I'm actually expecting a bit more from Into Darkness because of the "terrorist" angle.

I hope that the situation with Cumberbatch is a parallel of something that has happened in earth's history. That was always a typical staple of the series and films. Kirk, Spock and McCoy need to have a philosophical discussion about the rights and wrongs of something, and Spock and McCoy breaking into an argument with Kirk being the moderating influence and making the final decision.

I dunno. As good as Chris Pine is in the role, does he seem like the type to think deeply about these things? His portrayal of Kirk doesn't yet seem to have that quality like William Shatner did. I also want to see if Pine would be able to talk a computer or robot into self destructing based on taking orders to its logical conclusion.

I suspect this is the movie where Kirk learns how to moralize. The first one was about him learning to be a leader in crisis, the second one is maybe where he learns how to think.

Abrams makes changes just for the shake of It.This Is suspose to be alternate timeline
created by changing history. But,not everything would change.

for starters It's later said romans attacked the Kelven but the federation should not
know what romulans look like and Neo when addressing the kelven never identified himself
as a romulan.

I can accept the enterprise being launced much later and Spock serving at Starfleet academy Instead of under Pike on Enterprise. But Spock and Uhuru was stupid.Uhuru should have been Kirk's love Intrest.Spock as teacher getting involved with Cadet
Is something SPock would never do.

Chekov should not have been In film. His age doesn't make sense.

Abrams Is more Intrested In turning Star Trek Into copy of Star Wars.Kirk going from Cadet to captain and destrucon of vulcan can be trached to star wars.

Luke Skywalker going from farmboy to adventre to hero at end.The destrucon of Vulcan Is totally based on Alderan being destroyed.

I never expected a copy of classic sets but couldn't they do something that resembled
star trek will looking like mdern production.Engerning Is prime example.

I loved the movie to bits and consider it my favorite of 2009. (And I was mostly anticipating Half-Blood Prince)

Something I liked or more like loved was anything involving Old Spock in the film, fantastic stuff.

Something I didn't care for was the Klingon deleted scene not being in the film!

Only in the one movie STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER (written by Shatner). According to Nichelle Nichols, she and Doohan protested this because that had never been introduced before. She said that she and Doohan played around like that in their personal life because they had been friends for so long, but that Shatner for some reason wrote their personal joking around into the movie as a serious thing.

I personally, because of her statements, prefer to view the events of that movie as a sort of temporary mind altered event that was caused as collateral like damage from Sybok messing with their minds.

I prefer to view Star Trek 5 itself as a hallucinatory event that temporarily affected the Earth but didn't really happen in real life. Alongside Star Trek Nemesis and X-men 3.

There are at least 10,000 survivors that survived the planets destruction plus whatever other vulcans were out on ships or on other planets at the time.

The Enterprise being built on earth. It's minor, but kind of dumb.

Also, as far as the Kelvin and its crew not looking like TOS, that scene was set more than 30 years before TOS, why should it look any more like TOS than Wrath of Kahn does?

Sorry, but how does it make Spock the sole survivor? Vulcon had colonies and he even says there's, what, anout 10,000 or so left?

I loved the idea of vulcan getting destroyed. I hope that we see the impact of this in the new film. We really see how it has affected the Alpha Quadrant

Pros: The reboot acknowledges that there is actually an original timeline. This makes the Abrams-verse feel more "authentic," since we know that in another universe, everything we know about Trek still exists. These are the same characters we've seen before, only younger, and have had altered lives.

Cons: USS Enterprise build on land, not in space.

Here's the thing: lots of fans complain about the film being too action oriented and less sci-fi. Most of the Trek films have been more about the action, and less about exploration. Other than The Motion Picture, what films have actually?

Every Star Trek film will be action adventre story.

The problem with Abrams Is due to different storys he tells about his knowledge of Star Trek depending on who he Is talking to you can tell he Is more Intrested In turning Trek Into Star Wars.Into Darkness trailer seems more like a trailer for typical summer blockbuster like Transformers and dark Knight Instead of Star Trek.

Well its basically a Star Wars-like film with Star Trek characters. Was Wrath of Khan not an action film?

To me, "True Star Trek" has always been on television. On screen was its chance to really get more action-oriented stories with space battles. The idea is to get as many people interested in Star Trek before we can go back to what made Star Trek... Star Trek.
