Default Pixar Set To Launch Planes

Cars holds something of an odd place in the Pixar pantheon. A pet project of the studio’s creative big cheese John Lasseter, it’s been largely looked down upon as one of the “lesser” films produced by the Emeryville bods, and isn’t exactly one of their bigger earners. Unless you take into account the merchandising, which has spawned an empire all its own. So, naturally, there’s a sequel revving its engine up for release next year and now, according to Movieline, a direct-to-video spin-off called Planes.
Yes, for a team that once stood firmly against sequels (and worked itself to the bone rescuing Toy Story 2 from a DTV grave), there really does seem to have been an attitude shift in recent years, with sequels to some of the big hits, like Monsters Inc in production And with a whole company spin-off (the new Canadian arm of the studio), we’re guessing this could be just the start.
But before leaping to any conclusions, let’s have a little faith in the people behind Buzz, Woody and Lightning McQueen, shall we? Toy Story 3 was excellent and no one should count them out as money-grabbing factory-film types just yet.
No one has seen a frame of Planes, which will be set in the same vehicles-as-characters world as Radiator Springs and could well be a charming, fully realised adventure all its own.
If Planes is a success, we expect Trains to follow along shortly, followed by Cars 3 and a re-release under the banner title of Planes, Trains & Automobiles, with the ghost of John Hughes shaking his fist in frustration on the corner of the box art.

*checks calendar*

Nope, not April 1st.

This is so absurd, I have to ask: Seriously? Is this true? I am always the first to say, "Let's have faith in Pixar because they've never mediocre, let alone bad, movie before," and I will maintain that. But I am skeptical.

I am skeptical as well, although I love Cars, it is my least favorite Pixar film. I'm worried with Planes...

toy story 3 was the second sequel. Cars will be the third and Monster inc will be the forth.

its over now. they still make good stories but they will destroy everything.

Ugh. This is Lasseter's ego refusing to allow him to admit that Cars is the weakest of their properties.

I ask myself the same thing every time I watch it. I wonder how the Cars came into existence in the first place...a Holy Tire?

Yeah I forgot about Jay Jay the Jetplane!

and also don't forget about Thomas!

I thought Pixar was all for original ideas? Or was the last Thomas movie with Alic Baldwin SOOO BAD that the memory of its existence was burned out of our brains?

I`m not a fan of cars, and i love Pixar... but i dunno. I guess i`ll give them the benefit of the doubt until further notice.

Weakest property? It's generated more than $5 billion in sales, so, no.

Critically weakest? Yeah. But it still got mostly positive reviews, despite being considered the least favorite of the Pixar films. When a "bad" Pixar film still gets 75% on RT, it's still doing something right.

And I like Cars. It's not my favorite, it's very formula for a Pixar film, but the animation was downright breathtaking, I loved the music, and having travelled on the real Route 66, it was captured perfectly.

Also, as the aunt to a small army of Cars-loving boys...even though it's not a critical favorite, it's very much a favorite to a lot of families. They're even building a Cars-themed land at Disney's California Adventure, which looks pretty cool.

They've got the sequel bug...but I think that's a lot of Disney's doing as well as Pixar's.

DisneyToon Studios has announced the CG animated feature "Planes", a spin-off film from Disney•Pixar’s "Cars", which is set to debut on DVD and Blu-ray in Spring 2013.
According to the press release, the story will "introduce an entirely original and hilarious crew of daredevils from every corner of the globe".
The main story focuses on Dusty, a small town dreamer who longs to enter the most epic around-the-world air race … despite his fear of heights.
With the help and support of a fleet of new characters, Dusty wings his way into the biggest challenge of his life.

Hear me roar.

I thought the more awesome Pixar news is that we're getting two Toy Story shorts this year (one in front of Cars 2, the other in front of the new Muppet movie).

This is one of the least interesting things they've done. I'm sure it will work for some kids and as a family film. I hope they've got another original in the works though.

We're getting there.

I don't understand why Cars exists, let alone Cars 2 this summer. It's boggling. These people made one of the greatest trilogies of all-time.
