I see where you're coming from. For awhile I've thought that Trek fans who didn't like ST09 will dislike this movie even more for similar reasons. However, now I'm really thinking that this movie will surprise people. They more or less will know what to expect with Abrams' style and his "Trekverse".

Maybe it'll deliver those cerebral, thoughtful, poignant moments of the original series and films that many felt 09 lacked.

Yeah, the film may surprise us all. But the marketing especially the posters are so derivative of other films, it hurts. The trailers are fine but nothing has touched the beauty that was Star Trek 09's final trailer.

It's pretty similar to the Excelsior in its dimensions. Perhaps its a secret prototype ship rather than literally from the future.

Another explanation is that the ship is from an alternative timeline; I am thinking of the Enterprise episodes "In a Mirror, Darkly" Pts. I-II
