Yeah, Cumberbatch is an excellent actor. Sadly, I'm afraid he is going to be wasted in this movie doing a Khan retread (whether he is Khan, Mitchell, April or just plain John Harrison). The way he says "I'm better" and "Everything" in the Super Bowl spot, with calm arrogance, charisma, and fire in the eyes, screams a Khan-like character.

I don't see any Montalban in his performance at all, but okay...

Well, not Montalban per se. It's not like he is doing what Karl Urban did in terms of copying accent, mannerisms or cadence. More so, the character's dialogue and the characterization - the superiority complex and the way he stares at Kirk.

He's Khan-like in power and arrogance but thats it. Benedict plays it cold and stoic , vs the exotic and charismatic Ricardo.

I agree he is a bit colder to an extent, but there is a certain charismatic intensity going on. Like in the shot of Cumberbatch in the Captain's chair:

Also, personally, I think Cumberbatch's appearance gives him a slightly exotic look as well. His high, strong cheekbones and wideset eyes make for a very unique look.

When I say exotic with Ricardo, I mean strangely sexual!! Look at them pecs and accent! He's very showy whereas Benedict's look is understated.

So far Benedict looks like very direct. Meanwhile Ricardo will befriend you, earn his trust and he'll stab you in the back!

I'll definitely give you the exotic sexuality/sensuality. However, interviews so far suggest that Benedict's character character may be far less direct than you think. There are references to him employing psychological warfare and causing division among the crew - sounds a bit like Space Seed Khan in my opinion in regards to how he manipulated McGivers. Also, the way he appears to use the British parents also suggests a certain subversiveness.

You know, I'm quite stoked for this film.

I may have to take a day off of work so that I can slink off to the the IMAX cinema in London to see this baby properly.

wow..Uhura's red outfit is HOT.

Aside from that...I'm now more sure then ever we won't get Khan. This IS our Khan film. Bringing him into the next movie would be too similiar.

Sorry but I had a beverage moment there. If I had a penny for every time I've seen anyone writing this where the NX-class has come up to discussion, I'd be a very rich person.

A villain should never again in a film be captured and led away by troops.

I'm not sure what else there is to say. It doesn't make sense with the Botany Bay history (which would have been launched into space BEFORE the new timeline was established). If he is Khan, he can't possibly have the same motivation for his vengeance as the original. The theory I still like most is that Benedict is NOT Khan, but another genetically altered superhuman.

I don't think it is Khan, but A) it's possible the Botany Bay was discovered and reactivated much earlier in the new timeline, not necessarily by the Federation, which allowed Khan enough time to slay his rescuers and cleverly infiltrate contemporary Earth and work his plan in the background, and B) Khan will not necessarily be motivated by vengeance, but by the need to once again build an empire, which is the first time the audience will get to see this character doing what he was designed to do.

From what I've seen the ONLY place that indicates he's Khan is on that ew web page, the article itself merely comments that there has been long running speculation that he's Khan and it's an 'unconfirmed rumor'. So whoever did the webpage on ew's site decided to take it and run with it actually calling him Khan.

Since they have mostly gone for reasonable/passable lookalikes in the recasting I can't see how Cumberbatch will be Khan.

He looks nothing like Montalban at all (he looks more like Khan's blonde 2nd in command from WOK).

Best guess is he is from the federation and was genetically altered based on material secretly recovered from the Botany Bay, which in this timeline was found about a decade or more before it was in TOS, with Khan and his crew still held on ice while this film occurs.

I'm not yet convinced that he is Khan. I'm really hoping he isn't, because I don't want this franchise to basically be the old franchise on repeat...
