If the Chinese wanted a trade war with the US, it would just ban the films. It wouldn't bother, however, because the balance of trade is enormously in China's favour, and American demand for Chinese exports will see China become the worlds largest economy in the next twenty years.

I imagine the Chinese just didn't care.

They may love the money those movies may rake in from them but they still dislike american culture and the impact they feel it has on it's populace. They much rather have Chinese films be more popular than american ones.

It is a very nationalistic government.
Ahh, I see. I was aware the Chinese government cut films, removing any negative mention of China, but this is new to me. It's kind of interesting that they put the films in direct competition with one another, as opposed to staggering them out like most countries. Could that be a better way of showing which film Chinese audiences find more appealing, or would it not make a difference, I wonder.

Mainly just to limit the take of each movie. There are certain times each year they don't release any American movies at all so the local ones prosper as best they can.

Tomorrow Never Dies is my bellweather. If a film is better than TND, it is a good Bond film. If it is worse, it is a bad one. TND is pretty average across the board.

TWINE at least has some good stuff after Denise Richards shows up. Especially the scenes at the lighthouse, which conveniently she's not around for. The stuff between Bond & Elektra is fantastic, I just wish it had a better movie around it.

Die Another Day never recovers. The car chase across the frozen lake is good as far as action sequences go, but that's about it. There is more wrong with that movie than just Halle Berry, and even with the awful beach scene I think the appearance of Gustav Graves is more the point where the movie falls apart. There is more wrong with DAD than TWINE.

It really is. It's much more of a dumb fun action movie than Brosnan's next two much to it's delight and dismay. It's tries to recreate the success of Goldeneye, but fails though not as bad as TWINE or DAD though Eliot Carver I think is the worst villain out of the bunch.

Sophie Marceau was a really good and really beautiful Bond femme fatale in The World Is Not Enough. Robert Carlyle as her terrorist lover was really bland though.

I had more of a problem with Carlyle than Marceau and he really brings the movie down. He was built very well but started to slip and once the twist was revealed, he got even worse from there.

A bit like Bane in TDKR.

I liked Carlyle although I think it would of been better if he played a full on psycho like he did in Trainspotting, Cracker and Ravenous.

Yeah, Carlyle's villain was wasted potential. If written better, he could have actually been memorable.

You're right. Bane is the main villain until the very end of TDKR. Renard has two scenes as the main villain (his introduction and at the missile silo) before he gets demoted to henchman status.

I wonder if EON is just figuring out the logistics of the next Bond movie. Not just getting a director and schedule, but the fact that a 2014 is close to impossible unless they start filming in late 2013, AND that 2015 is super packed as hell.

Probably, I doubt they'll go the two year route again after what happened with QoS.

Then again 2012 was super packed as well, and....yeah. Second highest grossing film of the year

Depends on the releases, I suppose.

For example, and this is just from guessing, I think Avatar 2 will be released again in December. Then you also have the wild card of Star Wars Episode 7 if JJ can deliver the film in 2015 despite his reservations. I think as a compromise with Disney, Star Wars might be released in November or December unless Disney wants to push it to Summer 2016 (which in theory is the smart thing to do).

These are two big movies and maybe Bond can handle his own between the two. Again this is just guessing.

QOS was hurt because of the writers strike, not the two year gap.

It was still fast tracked, but you're right the writers strike ****ed things up for them too.

Let me amend that statement "I doubt they'll go the two year route again after the last three Brosnan misfires AND QoS"

To be fair, they got better writers than the last three Brosnan flicks....and Casino...and Quantum.

Think about that, how do you go from Die another Day to Casino...

Ian Fleming novel as a safety cushion to fall back on in that case I suppose.

I havent read all of Casino, but so far it's actually changed quite a bit. Also, DAD was (somewhat) based off of Moonraker..which doesn't always mean success. However, Moonraker is actually a great read...unlike the movie(s) based off it.

They've actually spoken publicly about intending to do just that.
