Well, you need characters that you can kill off and no one will miss.

I would rather have characters that you can kill off that people WILL miss. It adds more to the goal for the film itself.

Then you'd have people complain that the character was too good to get killed off too early, and that they wanted to see more of them. I definitely wouldn't want to see any fan favorites killed off in the very first movie.

I was kind of hoping the villain wouldn't be a brute like in the first film. Physically, Spidey was outmatched with the Lizard especially with his regenerating abilities on spot. He outsmarted him by substituting the Lizards formula with an antidote. Electro is a villain he will have to outsmart as well, but has a chance in combat with. With Rhino, it's going to be another "I can't beat him with my fists, but maybe with strategy" as we've seen in TASM already. Not that there's anything wrong with it, I'd just like to see Spidey duke it out once in a while. He has no chance with Rhino, it's going to be pure dodging, quipping and letting him make his own mistakes. Bring on the Goblin in the third so we can see some aerial combat!

People do this about Harvey Dent in TDK, but it packs much more of a punch with how he died in the film, just like if a great character is killed off in any film.

I think you're both right. It should be a mix of the two. That is balance.

spider-man, for example, could web up a car door, a motor bike, a mail box, a fire hydrant, and throw it like a wrecking ball at his more physically powerful opponent. proportionate strength of a spider, anyone? or he could still use punches etc, but lots of them. he could go in for quick barrages of strikes, before dodging away. he does have near limitless amounts of energy after all. webb made spidey look like such an utter weakling against the lizard...smh

and even if such offensive maneuvers are not particularly effective, they should at least hurt the rhino, or whoever, to an extent. the lizard was never once hurt by spider-man's strength. he was merely agitated/stumbled backwards.
spider-man doesn't have to knock out a bad guy, but we should see that he has super powers. in fact, by making rhino get up or groan or grimace in pain after an attack from spidey, it shows how much of a threat he really is; instead of simply showing that spider-man is weak.

Nah, Rhino should be impervious to what Spidey can dish out. Unless he abuses a wrecking ball to fight Rhino.

it's as if webb compensated for a lack of vision with his action sequences by making spidey strike classic poses from the comics. it won't save you in the sequel, webb.

just watched the bit in spider-man 1 where he takes out the thugs by the armored car. i like how he fights like a spider-man and not like a spider itself. he fought like spidey should.

ASM was good but not great movie, I felt the exact same thing with Spider-Man 1. SM2 (imho) is the high watermark for the Spider-Man franchise because it does an expert job of developing the hero & villian. The was made possible because the movie wasn't bogged down with the origin of the hero, there was an origin for Doc Ock but it was essentially told in two scenes.
Now take SM2, a movie widely considered one of the very best movies of the superhero genre and add another villian and for me the movie becomes less focused and character motivations and developments become diluted. I could be completely wrong about this, we'll see. |

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I think ASM is an excellent movie and with all the things going against it it could have been far far worse.

My family and friends, who aren't into comics, all liked it better than the first movie. So did I. That's all that matters to me.

Everyone I've talked to IRL about the film liked ASM alot more than Raimi's films as well.
The fan ratings at RT if I remember correctly shows too that it's a very liked film, even though critics are more 50/50 about it. |
