Default Playstation 4 and 4K

Do you think it's going to happen?

I think the Playstation 4 will certainly support it as a display option, but no way in hell will games be rendered at 4K. Most console games aren't even rendered in full HD resolutions anymore.

Most PS3 games just render in 720p right?

Hardly any gamers will have access to 4K TVs for many years so even if it supports it, it'll kind of make no difference. Doesn't make sense for developers to put resources towards coding for it when it's not really going to get seen.

My thoughts exactly.

Although, it does seem like something that Sony would try to use as a gimmick. Big numbers always sound appealing in advertising.

Yeah it does sound good for that purpose.

Even when it becomes affordable one day many years away, most people just won't have room for a TV big enough to tell a difference. I'm looking forward to it myself eventually as it's the kind of TV upgrade I want (rather than something like 3D glasses). I just bought a TV yesterday with the expectation of upgrading again in 5 or 6 years. Maybe in time for XBox 4 & PS5 when 4K will mean something.

4K tv might be established sooner than some people think:

7m 4K displays sold by 2016

By Chris Forrester

The displays are incredibly expensive, there’s next to nothing to view on them, and zero by way of consumer playback equipment – yet seemingly more than a half-million 4K displays will be sold this year, according to data from NPD Display Search.
Sales volumes will ramp up as retail prices fall, reaching more than 7 million units by 2016. China will lead sales volumes followed by the USA. China is forecast to buy more than 300,000 units this year growing to more than 2.6 million by 2016. The USA will take more than 2 million by 2016.
And it looks like Japan will start 4K TV broadcasts in 2014 and even begin to test 8K in 2016.

Not enough people have even fully adopted 1080p blu-rays yet so were still years away from any 4k home media content.

The same goes for television as well. No networks have any intention to upgrade to 4k anytime soon. The tv tech is moving faster than the media content for it. They might included 4k into ps4 but it will be years before we see any content for it.

Can't remember exactly where I read it first, but here's one article I found on the subject:

2m in a country with a huge population like the US by 2016 is no faster than I'd expect..in other words slow! I expect to upgrade TV in about 5 years time and by then 4k might have caught on.

But would love to see what this stuff looks like on those Japanese TV networks.

One of the problems is Moore's law has reached its limit. The processors these days are still not quite good enough to render games at that high resolution. And the processor industry is very stagnant at the moment.

4k is also a useless enhancement from 1080p HD until you start getting to like 80" and bigger, so I really don't see this being a huge factor. Not something I care about in the least. All 4k will do is pull unnecessary power from the PS4.

Like others have said...people are only now starting to adopt 1080P and MOST don't even know the difference between 720 and 1080p
