Default Rest in Peace Roger Ebert.

An utter shame. I always liked his film criticism.

There was mention in the celebrity death thread , but again he was one of the greats and I'll miss reading his reviews.

I'm actually rather bummed about this. I enjoyed reading his blogs even if I didn't always agree with his movie reviews.

His last blog was just two days ago. I wasn't surprised he died but I am surprised it was so fast.

Rogers's last posts:

Quote:
"At this point in my life, in addition to writing about movies, I may write about what it's like to cope with health challenges and the limitations they can force upon you. It really stinks that the cancer has returned and that I have spent too many days in the hospital. So on bad days I may write about the vulnerability that accompanies illness. On good days, I may wax ecstatic about a movie so good it transports me beyond illness."

I wouldn't have become the film lover I am today without Roger Ebert's work. I was 13 years old when I found a collection of his reviews in the school library. It opened my eyes to real enthusiasm for movies, to really engaging them as works of art worthy of more than a cursory glance and a chuckle. It revealed the true role of criticism as it relates to art. Whether I agreed with him or not all the time is utterly missing the point and the function of true film criticism. The world and culture of film is a richer place for having had men like him be a part of it. Roger Ebert literally reshaped the course of my life and I wouldn't be the man I am today had I not picked that book up.

RIP Roger Ebert

For a man I never met, I feel quite a bit of sorrow over this. He got me into film beyond the surface. His showed me you didn't have to look at films like a checklist. Because of him I have found some of my favorite films.

RIP Roger.

I use to occasionally watch "At the Movies" when he was on there. He didn't share my sensibilities enough for me to ever listen to his reviews but that wasn't a problem for me. He seemed like a cool dude whom loved cinema like I do so that is enough to garner my respect.

He popularized film criticism and was the worlds most well known critic. Everybody knows that thumbs up means the movie is good.

As I said in another thread I feel bad for his friends and family because losing a loved one is a hard thing to cope with.

R.I.P Ebert.

This is sad, I always loved the love/hate banter relationship he had with Gene Siskel that was sorely missed and couldn't be replicated with the filler hosts.

I might not always have enjoyed his reviews but the man knew what he was talking about and I would agree with him 80% of the time.

RIP Roger.

I'm glad I have his DVD commentary of "Dark City". He was a smart critic.
