Default Houston Waiter Stands Up For Little Boy With Down Syndrome

Quote:
A waiter for a Houston restaurant refused to serve a group of customers after he heard them making rude comments about a 5-year-old boy with Down syndrome sitting at another table. The best part: The restaurant is standing by his decision!

Here is the waiter,Michael Garcia, who stood up for the kid:

Here is the kid, Milo:

Here is what the douchebags said

If I'm ever in Houston I want to be served by this man so I can shake his hand.

It isn't that offensive.

Edit : not offensive for a joke between friends not meant to be heard outside of their circle.

This case is exactly why "the customer is always right" is such a stupid mantra.

It is a pretty insensitive comment to say about another human being. I wouldn't find it very funny myself.

The story posted by the OP maybe doesn't give as full of an account of what happened. You might have received the wrong impression that a single comment resulted in this, but apparently the jerk more than once felt the need to express his displeasure at sharing the world with people that are different than him. The waiter accomodated him/them at least once, but the final comment was likely the last straw.

This story maybe gives some more context to what happened:

Ha ok..well, that is different then.
I myself made some bad taste jokes about subjects that are sensitive but in private. Anyway, bad taste jokes are made for those who understand you.

If you don't want a tasteless joke to be heard outside your own circle, don't say it out loud in front of a waiter.

I thought he overhead, the details then specified the guys were loud and clear.
Not saying is A OK, just that I could relate IF it was not meant to hurt the kid/shock people around.

From the latter posted article, it seems that a family was voicing their displeasure and discomfort at having to witness the natural behavior of someone with D.S. The waiter first tried to accommodate them by moving them to a table farther away, but they continued to voice their displeasure to what seemed like a particularly inconsiderate and tasteless degree. So he refused to serve them. At least that's what I gathered from that, as opposed to a reaction to an overheard tasteless joke within a circle of people who would find it harmless.
