Default Should X-men stay with the "grounded" universe or embrace more Sci-fi , fantastical?

..

DOFP seems like the X-franchise may slowly trying to shed its image of the grounded reality and open us up to time travel and alternate realities.
Do you think for any future x-films they should introduce more standard
x-men comic conceits, like Aliens, Clones, Cyborgs etc. or try to stay grounded?

X-Men was never really grounded to be honest. Time travel and alternate reality seems to fit in just as much as anything involving mutant powers.

I wouldn't want to see them add "magic" or whatever but i don't see any departure really from what they've laid down. If start trek can do time travel no reason x-men can't.

X-Men Is at best when dealing with earth problems.Mutants Vs Mutants.Or threats caused
by antiMutant humans. Now withen that you can go scifi with time travel and sentinles as well as mutant powers but best keeping ailens out of It Inless you have X-Men appearing In FF film.

I think they totally need to find a way to balance the two since there are so many characters out there that would be fun to explore on film.

I don't mind the time travel, or big robots and cyborgs but I'd rather they stayed away from aliens and that kind of thing for the films. It's not a particularly logical distinction but I think all the space opera stuff dilutes the discrimination allegory which is the X-Men's main strength.

Fantastical.

We've seen realistic X-men movies. Now it's time to let loose.

If you make it as imaginative as possible you can elevate the franchise beyond basic superhero stuff.

and I think you could have something mind-blowingly fun like Avengers.

I agree would rather not bring in the Shiar might confuse things. I do want to see the more fantastical villains like Sinister and Apocalypse.

As long as they executive it well, there wouldn't be any problem.

I don't think fantasy will detract from the social message anymore than it does for the LOTR movoes.

It just depends on how it's executed.

I would like to see sinister and eventually Apocalypse and other sci fi villains..
Preferably after a strenuous session of Danger room hijinks and a breakfast scene of them eating strawberry jam. lol

A balance. I nice bit of sci-fi, but don't approach the magic. Leave Marvel Studious to that.

Im all for the crazy sci fi and fantasy elements in the X books showing up on screen. Sounds like we are finally starting to get that! As long as the writer knows what they're doing,it will be for the better by embracing it instead of avoiding it. Just limits the series and what they can do.

A bit sci fi with stuff like sentinels, time travellers, alternate dimensions, futuristic technology but not the space alien stuff like the Brood and Shiar.

I tend to agree. The only alien stuff I've ever really liked is featured in The Phoenix and Dark Phoenix Sagas. Beyond that, I don't care for it too much.

I think this question in part depends on who's shaping the movie.
Singer's two X films always felt like they where holding back some of the "big" stuff if you will, but that added to the excitement. You could feel the tension in the first two movies building for something real amazing in the third installment, that would blow the lid off the conservative pace the first two had.
When Ratner took X 3 he let loose like I think a lot of fans where wanting, but to me it didn't feel in rhythm with the first 2 films. Where it was good it was great but where it was bad it was just terrible.

Now that Singer is back I feel he'll give us that all out X film we want and make it feel right at the same time. To me X3 just didn't fit the trilogy, but I got a feeling DOFP is going to tie into everything nicely.
The only problem I have with both of Singers movies is that I think you get a big give and take on the characters. With Ratner and Vaughn I think they where good at solidifying the supporting characters for the most part. With Singer, their are in my honest opinion several characters you could replace with cardboard cutouts and it would probably be for the better. The only problem being they should have been great supporting characters to begin with.

But to answer the question, I think with Bryan Singer we will receive a great balance of both if that's what we get with this film.

Time travel, advanced technology, and maybe alternate dimensions - Yes

Aliens, magic, or just other out of this world mess - No. X-Men is always at it's best when it uses the mutants as a commentary on oppression and segregation in society.

I agree SuperT. It should still be "grounded" but they can open the doors to more fantastical elements...

"Magic" can just be explained as a mutant power...

But especially in a movie like this, we need to see...a gritty dark future that could actually happen.

a balance would be nice.

A grounded feel, but with great sci-fi elements from time to time.

not sure about Aliens/cosmic stuff at all. Id love to see original cast on the space, but not sure if they should go that route in the next years

Bryan would do it justice, Im sure, so..... who knows?

Maybe during the Age of Apocalypse, mutants are hiding out on Asteroid M

I tend to agree, if a characters abilities are somewhat mystical/magic based, I'd like them to find a way to keep that...

...does that mean I want the X-Men in limbo and demons......no...

...without really explaining or trying to, I think the Avengers did okay with a character like Thor and having the more fantastical sci-fi elements towards the end of the film.

Well, Scarlet Witch is a mutant, her power to cause weird stuff to happen by affecting probabilities is all mutant-based (well, it is these days, they once tried to say she had partly magical abilities too).
