He was then surrounded by more seasoned and - in some cases - much better known actors, such as Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Liam Neeson, Cillian Murphy, Rutger Hauer, Tom Wilkinson, Morgan Freeman, etc. I think an approach like that is great. When your main protagonist is a larger-than-life character (be it Batman or Superman) then I prefer when the actor playing that role is a relative unknown, who carries with them no expectations or idiosyncrasies which you may have noted in their previous work. It makes the believability of their performance so much easier to swallow. And it's fun to see them playing off against a very talented supporting cast. Putting aside the questions of acting ability or looks, having someone one like Nicholas Cage playing Superman would have been my worst nightmare - he's just too well known and has too much of an established identity. Cavill fits into the role very neatly; known to hardcore fans, but pretty unknown to the general public. For now anyway

Unknown is always the best way to go with superhero-characters and the likes.
And damn, BB really does have an amazing cast, when you line it up like that. It always impresses me. Not even MOS can top that.

That article describes the genesis of the MOS idea and its pitch to WB. But because Empire magazine offers no account of Goyer and Nolan fashioning the idea into a full outline or treatment, you assume that this process never happened?

Yeah I'd give the edge to BB. MOS has younger talent but still great.

Absolutlely.
And Project862006, Caine, Oldman, Neeson, Hauer, Wilkinson and Freeman against Crowe, Costner, Lane and Fishburne is no match. Adams and particularly Shannon just arent that big heavyweights yet despite their acknowledgements.

Crowe isn't a big heavyweight anymore and Costner is slowly mounting up a long-overdue comeback. Adams is awesome and the folks know her. Shannon? He's a nobody to the masses.

The article is the March 2013 issue of Empire. The author states that "about three and a half years ago" that this started. What was Nolan doing three and a half years ago? Oh that's right, he was knee deep in shooting Inception, his most personal movie. I just can't see Nolan co-writing a Superman film with Goyer while he was filming Inception.

According to the very article that you’re citing, Nolan and Goyer were working on the script for TDKR. So, apparently, Nolan was no longer “knee deep” in Inception.

Well, it's not that easy.
Some actors are more popular than others, some are more talented, some have a better history, some are living their prime, some have marginal roles in the film, some have more suitable roles, some have better written characters ... Many things define a good casting. |

Nolan was in the middle of shooting Inception by mid 2009, but he did say in interviews that he had a general outline for TDKR before Inception as they (him and Emma) said they knew Bane was the villain before shooting Inception. Which must mean the writer is talking about late 2009 when Nolan was in post for Inception. Perhaps then they made further developments on Batman and the ideas for MOS germinated from Goyer. But I still don't see anything beyond that phone call for Nolan between post for Inception, promoting Inception and getting ready for pre-production on Rises.

Marketing to people who are already going to see it anyway is likely not much of their concern at this point.

Amy Adams > Katie Holmes... That alone makes this cast superior.

Personally, I consider Amy Adams the most talented of the two casts (MoS and BB). I mean at the time of filming.
I hope MoS will make use of most of her potential. |
