Who should direct VIII and IX?

I always thought it was a cool idea Lucas started with having Star Wars be his vision, but allowing filmmakers he respects direct them (His mentor Kernshner and his friend Speilberg, though the guild prevented that.) It would keep the films fresh and give different perspective to them, making them like true modern myths. I truly hope they get back to this idea with the Sequel Trilogy. Anyway on that note, who should direct the next films besides JJ Abrams.

I think they will keep Abrams for the episodic entries and get different directors for the spin off films. Even if those individually should spawn sequels, which if they use the marvel plan will. I think fincher would be interesting for a fett movie. I'm not really a fan of johnston but to each is own. Del Toro would be interesting. Same for Cuaron.

Exclusive Update: Alfonso Cuaron Lining Up For STAR WARS Ep VIII? Simon Pegg Going STAR WARS On Us?

You all know by now that we have some great sources embedded in key franchises - one of which is the mighty STAR WARS universe. Well the same source that gave us the exclusive that the third STAR WARS trilogy is going to happen, in 3D, without Lucas directing, that it will focus on the Skywalker offspring, and that the trilogy will follow in the original trilogy's tone is back.

So what's cooking now? How about Alfonso Cuaron getting up close and personal? I mentioned Episode VIII, but it could be Episode IX as well (or both for that matter). I would LOVE to see a STARS WARS movie directed by Cuaron. So many people are going to have the light turned on as to how brilliant a director he is after they see GRAVITY this year.

Anyway, I won't further spoil the spy info - so read on and we'll discuss afterwards!

As far as I know Episode 7 was then, and is now, focusing on the Skywalker's offspring. As I told you before, I believe duel personalities develop, akin to Anakin and Obi Wan, and Luke and Vader in the first trilogies, which as far as I am aware, is the driving force behind the new trilogy. Things may change however, but I doubt it, this has been long in the making.

The focus is on the original trilogy in regards of reverence and tone. Remember I told you before that the tone was important, well I believe they are really taking that seriously. From everything I know, they're focusing on that directly. Remember everything has the ability to change drastically, as Star Wars right now apart from the twin trilogies is a huge blank canvas. However, the trilogies ongoing narrative will continue to focus on that particular branch, whereas the stand alone movies, will fill and expand the voids in between in multiple timelines, and have potential to then be franchised themselves in regards to the worlds they open up.

Yoda, Palpatine, Jabba, Boba, Plagueis etc.

I believe they are very clued into what fans would and wouldn't like, and considering Mr Ford himself may not be done with his character yet, I wouldn't start picketing Lucasfilm about young Han Solo movies being made just yet. Which I was led to believe couldn't be further from how they want to move forward creatively anyway.

Harrison Ford has been approached, he has not turned it down, and is from everything I hear, very interested in returning to the role of Han Solo again, but is not signed as was reported recently. Negotiating may be a better choice of words right now. Hope it shakes out.

Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher were also approached a long time ago, as was ford, and a few other key players. I would all but guarantee, they will be in Episode 7, and I would be confident that Ford will return too. If the universe aligns correctly.

J.J. Abrams name was brought up to me numerous times, but only in reference to re-brand and ground up respect for world building that the franchise was looking to take back then. Very sneaky. Interesting to see he was offered the most coveted and feared gig in cinema history. Ultimately he is the perfect choice to direct episode 7, and set up the franchise to steward through the first trilogy. The names I mentioned to you before, remember them (EDITOR'S NOTE: my source's director list can be found here).[/COLOR] Alfonso Cuaron especially. Trust me.

J.J. Abrams mystery cube or whatever he is calling it today, is in full effect, Star Wars news is going to be very thin on the ground for the foreseeable future, but expect Simon Pegg to be involved in some capacity. Can't say why, but lets just say I have a strong feeling about that.

Star Wars fans, Kathleen and J.J have your interests at heart.

So, very interesting!! And what is Simon Pegg doing with STAR WARS? Ideas? Is he jumping with Abrams in some fashion? Clearly he is deep in STAR TREK but being the miracle worker that Scotty is, apparently Pegg is needed in the STAR WARS universe as well!

And Cuaron? Hopefully that happens. As of right now it is in the works, so fingers crossed! More exclusive STAR WARS, AVATAR and HOBBIT info when I get it!

I dunno, I'd kinda like to see a different director with each film on one hand. seems to have worked on the OT. But on the other hand, as a huge fan and supporter of the prequels I also think the trilogy could benefit greatly if Abrams saw it all the way through, in terms of cohesiveness and accuracy.

Rumor: Alfonso Cuaron to direct Star Wars episode VIII (and possibly episode IX also)

MarketSaw has been one of the only non-trades on the pulse of the new Star Wars trilogy. They were the first ones to actually announce the new trilogy back in 2009 and took it on the chin because LucasFilm didn't confirm the news for ages. They also revealed the directors list for Episode VII which included runner-up Matthew Vaughn who was confirmed to have pitched to LucasFilm. Another name on that list was Alfonso Cuarón. The site is reporting that Alfonso is now lining-up to direct Episode VIII, Episode IX or both. If true, J.J. Abrams might only be around for Episode VII.

The director is best known for the dystopian thriller Children of Men and his much more mature Harry Potter installment The Prisoner of Azkaban. His anticipated sci-fi thriller Gravity starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney will finally be released later this year. Alfonso Cuarón was reported back in September to be working with J.J. Abrams on an untitled supernatural/superpower series for NBC, which Alfonso would co-write/direct the pilot. It's very likely the relationship with Abrams has grown since along with the fact that Cuarón had been on LucasFilms' radar. We should keep in mind that three different directors made the original trilogy. It could be the studio is also aiming for a darker film with Episode VIII similar to Empire Strikes Back. Having Cuarón directing could find the right amount of darkness for a PG-13 film.

I can honestly say I've never heard of Cuaron. I looked him up on IMDB and the one film I've seen of his was the Harry Potter one, but I don't recall anything about it. Given the excitement it sounds like he's pretty good!

Lucas directing the prequels had nothing to do with their cohesiveness. Not even getting into the quality of the films, Lucas admitted several times he was just writing them as he went a long with a general plan. Much like the original trilogy. It's pretty evident he hadn't thought them through all the way as he made great changes to the intended next steps several times (ie. Jar Jar getting written out, the obvious lead into Boba vs Mace in Episode III which never happened and got written out, etc). As long as Kennedy and the writers have a clear vision all the director does is flesh it out on the screen and give it their own touch.

It'd be cool to see the guy who's rebuilt Star Trek get his film, maybe Peter Jackson give Star Wars his Lord of the Rings edge, and maybe someone like Zach Snyder who could bring some cool visuals. I really don't wanna make this about the prequels and the originals.

I'm not really feeling Cuaron, he's a great director but I really wasn't a fan of what he did with Harry Potter. That film was so off from the vibes the book had, it seemed like he really wanted to make say Goblet of Fire but he was stuck with the lighter hearted Azkaban. My only concern is he will impose too much on the story of they've got in mind.

Anyway on aside note, with Star Trek and all it wouldn't surprise me if Abrams doesn't stick around for more than one film.

Watch Children of Men and Great Expectations. The guy's a hell of a director (and his HP film is the prettiest and meatiest, imo).

Ohh, I've seen Children Of Men! Must have missed that when I skimmed his IMDB page. He did good action, especially that amazing continuous shot. Bodes well for Star Wars indeed!

I agree but given that wasn't what the story called for, I have reservations about him on Star Wars.

I think J.J will finish both trilogies of films. I think Cuaron will have a spin off film and if it does well perhaps he can turn that into a series.

And the film should be separated into two parts.

There should also be trailers for the SW spinoffs between the two parts!

It would be like those kinds of grindy movies that used to play in certain houses.

I hope Abrams doesn't. I like the guy but I really I like the idea of Star Wars being a set story where different directors get to add their own touch. Lucas was even gonna do this with the prequels before Phantom Menace came out and he had something to prove
