Not knocking Don Cheadle or anything, he's okay, but to me Terrence Howard WAS Rhodey. His look, the way he carried himself, his chemistry with RDJ. Everything was spot on. Like I said, Cheadle is okay, not bad and definitely not the worst choice, but I just really miss Howard and what could have been.

He barely did anything. So no.
If you've never read the comics, what does the movie tell you about him? Nothing. |

^ I disagree with this. We might not get a lot of background on his character in terms of his past, but his interactions with Tony and role in the film said a lot about him.

I think Terrence Howard was a better fit for the role.

Nah.
Is this the new fanboy civil war territory? Star Wars v Star Trek has lost its glamour so now it's Cheadle versus Howard?

Surely Wars vs Trek is (or will be) stronger than ever with Abrams crossing the field?

Howard was physically bigger than RDJ, hence the impression that he was stronger/ more military type. Other than that, he was bland (too bland for the role). And he had some truly terrible moments, like the "don't bother me untl you have put yourself together" one. THe only scene that was great was him hugging Tony in the desert, and that one was sold mosly by RDJ, not him.
Cheadle is fine. Does not look as "big" as Howard, does not look bad either. Actually, neither movie have managed to flesh Rhodey out, so far. He always comes off as someone who tolerates Tony for the sake of weapons/suits, but I do not see the supposed strong friendship. I have high hopes for IM3, though, looks like they corrected this. |

Don Cheadle as Rhodey ACTS like an Air Force colonel. He has a strong sense of duty, of patriotism and pride, and decorum and regulation.
Terence Howard as Rhodey acts like a gangsta pimp. His ass would've been dishonorably discharged long before he could've become an officer. So do I miss Howard? Let's see: nope.

I definitely prefer Terrence Howard, I feel like he had much better chemistry with Downey than Cheadle does.

"Next time, baby!"
Drinking sake with strippers on Tony's jet. The "fun-vee." "I don't blow on a man's dice." "Oh my god, you crazy son of a *****! You owe me a plane, you know that, right?" "That's the coolest thing I've ever seen." "Just stick to the cards, man." This is black sidekick shuckin' and jivin', and it's as old as the 60s. Cheadle in IM2 and IM3 acts like a Colonel in the USAF, not Eddie Murphy in 48 Hours.

I am long over Howard. It was a bit of surprise back before IM2, but past Avengers and going into IM3, I just don't think about it these days.

None of that equates to "jivin" and definitely not being a "gangsta pimp". The hell is wrong with you. Being stiff and unfunny =/= being a colonel in the USAF. Quite the opposite, many colonel's have that type of sense of humor IN ADDITION to their sense of duty. Honestly, unless you're just a hard ass most people in the military only act upright or whatever in front of their superiors. |

Howard should have played a highly skilled and trained jet pilot but instead gave his best Chris Tucker impression

You guys really don't know a whole lot about real people in the military do you...or at least the Air Force. And he was hardly doing a Chris Tucker impersonation. Honestly some of this sounds borderline racist. Just because Howard isn't stiff doesn't mean he's trying to be the funny black guy or a "gangsta pimp". Seriously...

Honestly? I do. Unfortunately I haven't sensed a whiff of chemistry between Robert and Don like I did with Robert and Howard. Perhaps a different director in Shane Black will be able to bring something out of them that Favs missed, but I doubt it. Because Favs is an actors director through and through and if he couldn't bring out any chemistry in them, who can?
