Default Guardians of the Galaxy .01

Let me just preface this by saying I am a fan of Bendis, loved his Daredevil/Avengers/Ultimate SM/X-men and creator owned stuff. And I know it's not even the first issue yet and lots can happen down the road. I also should say that I'm not very familiar with Star-Lord's original origin story. That said, as a huge fan of the DnA series, I feel the need to rant.

First off, an observation. Is it just me or is Star-Lord's origin story in the .01 issue super similar to Jeph Loeb's new NOVA's origin story? Kid inherits Dad's space helmet vs kid inherits dad's space gun. We've got the restless/troubled home life, school bullying etc... It's not exactly the same but it's very similar. They even both pretty much end with the kid in a hospital bed receiving the helmet/gun. What's up with that?

NEXT, I know this is supposed to be a new jumping on point so I was a little ticked at something... Star-Lord's explanation to Tony Stark and the reasoning for why he and the Guardians do what they do... is not really at all why the team formed in the first place after all the Annihilation events.

They're the Guardians of the GALAXY. Not the Guardians of Earth.

At the end of the .1 issue Star-Lord literally says his father can go on fighting his war and the Badoon can wreak havoc all over the galaxy for all he cares as long they don't touch the earth..... what is THAT?

That's not the character I knew from the previous series. The Guardians formed to be a proactive team to stop threats to the entire galaxy before they got out of hand. Not just to protect earth. And why the hell would the rest of this team of aliens give a ***** about earth? End nerd rant.

So all I'm saying is I hope this gets dealt with or explained as the series progresses. Cause right now I'm all like whaaaaaat? Also the usual where's his helmet, Knowhere, how is he even still alive, blonde hair?? Iron Man?? blah blah blah etc. etc.

Marvel has this very obscurantist view of earth as the center of the universe, and new york as the center of earth.

I skipped the .1 issue because it didn't really look appealing, but planned on maybe trying it once the first issue comes out... provided I like what I see there. What you say, though, is a bit off putting. While I never thought DnA's Guardians of the Galaxy was the best stuff they put out (that would be Nova) it still managed to get me to love Starlord and the rest of the team. If Peter did basically say screw the rest of the galaxy, save Earth, that's just very off character.

I mean, it's not the first time Bendis has gotten characterisations wrong, but that is pretty far off the beaten path for Peter.

The exact line was "So I thought to myself, you know, my idiot dad can keep on fighting his never ending war... and the Badoon can go on wreaking havoc all over the galaxy... but I can make damn well sure they never touch earth again."

It made sense within the story, since the Badoon did kill his mother, but it is odd seeing the Guardians of the Galaxy say they don't really care about the havoc in the galaxy. It was a fairly unoriginal issue, but I wouldn't know anything about the mischaracterizations since this is my first time read GotG. Hopefully the real #1 will be better.

One of the many things that made the DnA Guardians of the Galaxy great was that it was it's own thing. Sure it had some small connections to earth here and there, (Quill, Nova, Secret Invasion, 42 etc.) but they were primarily dealing with bigger things, bigger threats than just earth and it's convoluted superhero drama.

They had to protect the GALAXY, and sure earth was part of that galaxy but not the main focus. Earth has enough superheroes protecting it. So why are they taking what made the Guardians different and mixing it with superheroes, Iron Man, and earth?

It wasn't broken. So why try to fix it?

Bendis (in my opinion) revitalized Daredevil, Avengers, and is doing the same for X-men right now. But the difference here is I don't really think Guardians needs to be revitalized (DnA already did that), it just needs more eyes on it.

And again I could be overreacting like a nervous fanboy here... But the DnA stuff was really special to me, and I hope Bendis can help make it more popular without taking away that something special.

It only came from a tiny bit of dialogue but right now Star-Lord does not seem to be the same character I came to enjoy.

you sir..are dead on!

however..as ive said before MASSIVE credit needs to given to giffen..with his tone on THANOS and Annihilation..we had the cornerstone for what DnA did.

One can argue that Star Lord is hardened by the fact that he seemingly died at the end of Thanos Imperative and is now back alive. One can argue that, of course we have no idea how Star Lord is alive again or at least back and we can only hope Bendis gets around to it.

First time reading GOTG, and I enjoyed it. Knew Stark was jumping on board, but it was surprised to see him this issue.

Always good to see new fans. I expect a lot more when the movie starts rolling. You have any interest in reading the older stuff?

If I had the money, I'd buy some of the older books.

I'm very confused, is this a continuation of the Nova/Guardians of the Galaxy books or a total reboot. It feels like a total reboot that is contradicting a lot of the DnA stuff.

Not so much contradicting it but pretty much ignoring it. They apparently said they'll explain how Star Lord is back at some point but God knows when that will happen.

I agree that DnA's GotG worked because it was its own thing. It was a true space epic that only touched the fringes of the main Marvel Universe.

I have lite interest in reading this because Bendis is a disaster.

New to GoTG because basically enless you want to spend $95 for the first volume of Annihilation you can't find it. I'm gonna wait for the eventual reprint before the GoTG movie. Sad to hear about the mis- characterization in the book. I also don't get why Iron Man needs to be in this.

Brand new to this series. Never read any of the other books, but I liked it. I do hope it moves away from just the Earth centric story lines and really shows new parts of the Galaxy.

New fan.

Thood news then is that the Guardians have nothing to do with the first volume of Annihilation (other than a few of them showing up). The Guardians unofficially began to gather in the Annihilation Conquest: Star Lord mini, and that continued into Annihilation Conquest (the 2nd Annihilation). That then led into Guardians of the Galaxy.

I don't know if that helps, but I thought I'd bring it up.

And dumb as a stump. That all changed in the Drax mini that lead direction into the Annihilation Prologue issue

lol I just realized you were talking about what happened in The Thanos Imperative, not that Drax looks bigger. Silly me.

I think I'm going to go back and read all the cosmic stuff that came out from 2004-2011, from the Thanos limited series to the Thanos Imperative. Should be pretty fun. I have a hunch that that stuff will remain superior to the watered down stuff we'll be getting in the new Guardians that are basically full blown space Avengers now...just a hunch.

I flipped through #0.1 in the shop and was a bit dismayed to find it was more a Star-Lord comic than a Guardians comic. Granted, that could just be because it's a prequel of sorts, but if the prequel is literally all about Star-Lord, I can't help wondering whether the whole series will be more Star-Lord & Co. instead of Guardians of the Galaxy.

The fact that Iron Man's on the team is kind of derpy too. And I hate their new costumes. But that last one's just a nitpick.

HOLY! I totally forgot about Cami!! Was her story ever continued elsewhere?? It's been a LONG time but... doesn't Drax just LEAVE her on some random planet during Annihilation? And she was never brought up again??

I'm also not a fan of their new costumes. And the presence of Iron Man seems super forced, just to try and bring in movie fans and what not.
