You can refuse to acknowledge it, but he was.

I'll accept that Killian created the persona of The Mandarin and to the public Kingsley's character is the face of The Mandarin and the Ten rings organization .

Just to bring up what Jeremy Jahns said in this video, Killian calling himself the Mandarin to me feels like your father calling himself Santa Claus. Yeah, you can't argue it was his idea to fool you he exist, but it's disappointing nonetheless.

Quoted for truth. People can imagine how they might reinterpret the character for another film or whatever, but the end of the day that was the Mandarin.

It's like Denise Richards being a rocket scientist in a James Bond movie. She is rocket
scientist in the movie, everyone calls her a rocket scientist in the movie but no way do I buy her as a rocket scientist.

Doesn't matter if you 'buy it' or not. In-universe, Denise was a rocket scientist. In-universe, specifically the alternate dimension known as Earth-199999 aka MCU Earth, Killian is this world's version of the Mandarin.

Whiskey Tango is right. If a character in a story says they are The Mandarin, especially when said story flat out says, "Hey, this other guy IS NOT The Mandarin, then that's who they are. Otherwise, we would have been given some indication or post-credit scene to tell us there was someone else behind the scenes.

You don't have to buy it. All Marvel and associated companies care about it are the movie ticket sales, and you definitely bought one of those.

Frankly, who is and isn't the Mandarin isn't as important as who the characters are and what they do for the story. The dilemma is about a far more generic and somewhat predictable character and what impact he has on the film, especially when said character has little relationship with the hero. The twist works in context, but it doesn't work in the films favour because it doesn't really mean anything. It's a classic switcheeroo story, the pulling back the curtain to reveal the wizard, the puppet master as it were, but given it was obvious Killian was a baddie earlier on and his lack of any real connection to Stark the switcheeroo is really diluted. The shock isn't so much that Killian is the real mastermind, the shock is about the audacity in Marvel throwing what on paper looked like a great on screen villain away.

just a thought..........

If Kingsley's "Trevor" is an actor, who's to say that his foolish, drunken behavior was..........just an act?

iow........what if "Trevor" really is the Mandarin? What if Killian's declaration that he was the Mandarin merely part of the plan of misdirection?

it isn't out of the realm of possibility............

I was trying to place Ben Kingsley's voice as "The Mandarin" and it kind of reminds me of Dana Carvey imitating Tom Brokaw. Yep, try getting that out you head. "Tony Stark, dead today at age 43..."

IMO I think His drunken behavior WAS an act, his demeanor changed quite a bit when Savin knocks out Tony and he says he "handled it" I also think he knew what was going on wasn't as oblivious as he seemed, but that's just what I believe, Love the move or hate it I think one thing is for certain Kingsley knocked it out of the park from an acting standpoint he's actually my highlight of the film lol.

That's why I actually paid for a ticket to GI Joe2. I'm not giving Marvel money for this ****.

Marvel has left themselves an out here though. Killian may not be the Mandarin any more than your parents were Santa Claus when you were a little kid(thank you Jeremy Jahns for the analogy). So when he says he's the Mandarin you can take that to mean "There is no Mandarin, I made him up" just like there is no Santa Claus. But maybe he's wrong. Maybe he based the Mandarin he made up off an urban legend or something like that. An urban legend that actually has some truth to it. After all, there really was a 10 Rings group in the 1st 2 films. And at no point in this film are the 10 Rings mentioned by name(they only use the symbol from the first film) nor does Killian at any point acknowledge their activities in kidnapping Tony in IM1. So it's possible that he just picked a known terrorist group with some mystique of an urban legend behind it and used their iconography for his own scheme.

Just saying Marvel has left a window open to fix this god-awful mess. Whether they take it or not is entirely up in the air. I hope they do. It'd go a long way to redeeming this movie, though it'd still be the most flawed of all 3 films, IMO.

So you're giving money away to even worse crap. You could have chosen at least an indie movie or something.

I doubt it was worse than this. Few films actually get me to hate them even if they are bad movies. This was such a film. I doubt I'd have helf hatred for GI Joe2. I probably just wouldn't have liked it.

Just my two cents about the Mandarin :

Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
I was looking forward to see how this character would play out in the movies, because it's a tricky one. The trailers and the promotions left us with an impression that it was going to be freaking cool. All of the Mandarin's messages to the world, his threats, and the shroud of history the covered him up, not mentioning Kingsley masterful performance, made him a very compelling character. When the twist came up, well I'm not going to lie, I was a little disappointed. But I still wanted to know where this movie was going, because so far it was very good. And then we learned that Killian invented the Mandarin, and not only that, in that way, Killian was the Mandarin. Trevor was just the mouthpiece. Remembering the first films, if Killian setup the Mandarin, then most likely, he setup the 10 rings organization, so he was behind some of the principal plot points from the previous films. He was after Stark long before the events of this film came to be.

So all in all, I found the twist very refreshing, it was a very unpredictable film, and to me the best Iron man movie yet.

Technically given the window of possibility they allowed to exist, they wouldn't necessarily need to reboot to fix this.

I think Favreau should've finished what he started. I can't and won't believe Killian was behind Stark's kidnapping in Afganistan and assisted Vanko in his revenge. Its hilarious to think he was behind the ten rings organization. Someone is behind the ten rings and that someone funded Killian. They had to. He called him "the master" behind closed doors. This movie is great for the general audience but for us, who actually had kept track since the first movie and know who the Mandarin really is...its a travesty. In a world where Thor exists, a guy with powerful rings should've been used and used brilliantly. Wasted opportunity.
