Let's agree to disagree. I think there is plenty of big budget superhero movies with great cinematography, not at least compared to what is seen in The Wolverine trailers. I don't wanna judge it until I've seen the complete and finished thing (the visuals of a trailer are often misleading), but in the trailers it looks serviceable at best. Even if it turns out to be that way though, it can still be a great movie of course.

I agree that it's not like the previous X-Men movies has excelled in their visuals. But I'd say both X1 and 2 looks pretty good. This looks way more bland.

And I really like the cinematography of both Walk the Line and Copland, so that also made me hope for better from Mangold. Maybe it's just the DP that isn't up to par though.

I must be one of the few that didn't have any problem with the trailer

No, many others have said the same.

Yup. Kick Ass looks great in a funky sort of way. Mathew Vaughn always had a nifty visual eye.

So he was either lying or Hugh Jackman meant the script was 85% the same from Christopher McQuarrie's script.
Did McQuarrie write the very first draft for this movie?

I may be wrong but I thought Aronofsky wrote the very first draft himself. Or perhaps just a story treatment. That's what the poster on here seemed to have, and seemed to be describing - an outline rather than a full screenplay.

I believe McQuarrie wrote the first draft, which is the one Aronofsky would have used. McQuarrie was hired in 2009 and Aronofsky a year later. Alexei only had access to a summary of the script, which is what you may be thinking of?

Not sure. Aronofsky often writes his own screenplays (as with The Fountain, Noah, Requiem for a Dream, though not Black Swan or The Wrestler).

Maybe Alexei had a subsequent draft by Aronofsky.

Chris Claremont said in that Comic Book Resources chat that he had read the McQuarrie script and liked it and now sees that bone claws have been added to the movie, so the film as it is now does have changes.

I recall Alexei saying that the summary he had did not include Viper, and had Silver Samurai but not as a mutant. But the question is what version did he have, and was it genuine?

I believe Aronofsky was working with McQuarrie's script and not rewriting it himself.
Quote:
Chris McQuarrie wrote a great screenplay. We're trying to get it into a slightly better place but he's working on it, and I think it'll be easy to fix. Chris is an amazing writer and I'm very lucky to have him as a collaborator.
http://www.superherohype.com/news/ar...-the-wolverine

I can't speak to the legitimacy of the summary, but it seems to fall in line with McQuarrie's description of his script, at least insofar as Silver Samurai not being a mutant.
Quote:
Well you know, it was an X-Men movie – it was a Marvel movie – but it existed very much in a real world. And more than anything, I love it for the very fact that – at least in the script I wrote – he was the only mutant in the movie… It was what you’d imagine the Wolverine universe to be under the control of somebody who wrote ‘The Usual Suspects’ and ‘The Way of the Gun’ and is a fan of Sergio Leone. It was Kurosawa’s Wolverine. There was a real romance to it, there was real humor to it, and a very straightforward sort of plain-faced brutality to it. I’m hoping they preserve that.

Beyond that, ?????

I think this is the first X-men/wolverine movie shot in Digital/arri-alexa? So the colors are sharper, fluid, less noise in the images. Sometimes the problem can occur when you over light or under light a picture. They are filming a "modern" day Japan that has to sink in with "Fox" X-Men universe and make people believe its the same world they set up in the past movies. I understand where your coming from but I don't see much differences.

(I think Amir Mokri only filmed maybe 10-15% "maybe more" before being Replaced.)

Wolverine can't be the only mutant in the movie... Viper is in the movie as well.

We're talking about McQuarrie's script, not the rewritten one used for the movie.

I think its just coloring the effect/color tint that they used for the camera shots. But it looks way better compare to the camera shots of Origins.

It's just best to forget Origins.

Also...I agree with Ex...it could be the old man telling Logan the story of what happened as it seems to be from his POV. We as the audience see the flashback.

Also, this film takes place after The Last Stand, and Wolverine has been having flashbacks since X-Men, especially when someone is there to jog his memory, so I don't think this flashback is too much of an issue.

Or maybe they could come up with something like, as a final goodbye, Jean unlocked his memories. But that memory jog could be enough.

Silver Samurai's a mutant as well, I hope they don't leave that out along with his energy sword ability.

Personally I love Jackman's delivery in the trailer. I dig the more low-key ruggedness.

So, I was away without internet access for the trailer etc coming out and have only just had a chance to watch it (I've also not had the chance keep track of the 29 page explosion of posts that followed).

I liked it, it definitely deviates from the Wolverine mini-series a fair bit but that's to be expected really. It looks like rather than the themes of duality, man vs animal, honour etc from the original comic they're going for immortality, the weight of time and perhaps responsibility (usually what comes up when a superhero loses their powers). Of course the other themes could come up as well. The small glimpses of Silver Samurai look good.

Generally I'm still cautiously optimistic about the film, I like what I've seen so far.
