Interesting interview with Jackman on the score to CA:TWS...

“You need a sort of perfect storm of circumstances to allow something radical to work in a film where you’re not just being self-conscious, where you’re not just trying to show off or whatever, and this [Captain America] was it. I can’t say too much because I know Marvel will shoot me, but Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a brilliant film that is part of the Marvel franchise but the directors John and Anthony Russo are geniuses. It’s a Marvel film that’s taking it one step further. They’ve made Captain America much more contemporary. The story is set in 2013, so it’s not a period film and it doesn’t have Indiana Jones style Nazis running around the place, it’s all set in the modern era and it’s a cross between a superhero and a modern political thriller so that’s already awesome”.

“What’s great about that is because it’s a Captain America film you need these traditional, thematic elements which eventually come through in act three of the film, but also the film is super-contemporary. Plus, Winter Soldier is this crazy, dark, RoboCop-type figure who is somewhat human but mechanised, completely messed up. Slightly human but completely tortured and completely manipulated, but crucially mechanised”.

“So I said you know what, I’m gonna do something completely crazy and dark for the Winter Soldier, and I’m just gonna go for it. I hadn’t worked with these directors before, and away from picture I just wrote a suite for the Winter Soldier that was about six or seven minutes long that I spent ages on and treated it like a record. The idea being that if I get this vibe right, if I nail this six or seven minute thing which I think is the essence of the character and it’s super radical and it’s not that traditional and not completely orchestral because I want to save some of that for Captain America, let’s just see what these guys say. I played it for them really loud, and after they were finished there was a bit of a silence, and then Joe [Russo] went “I love it! Awesome!” (laughs) What was really cool about it was that he said that piece was so great and unique and it doesn’t sound exactly like film music, do me a favour and don’t do that thing when once we start working on the movie it gets sanitised or watered down. Whatever it is I just heard, I really want to hear that in the movie and not just 20% of that in the film, and that gave me all the information I needed about how creatively brave these guys were and it works in the film, and I’m really proud of it. And this track that I’m talking about will be on the CD in it’s original form”.

Though I wasn't happy with his casting as composer. I'm now somewhat interested in the score thanks to how intriguing he describes it here. It also has gotten me more curious about the kind of film TWS will be. I notice he didn't mention adapting Silvestri's theme so he might not be using it, which is a shame b/c Tyler was able to for TDW.

The music for the trailer at the end of the clip seems like it could apply to the Winter Soldier theme he talked about.

I hope so. I love the swell and build of that piece they used for the trailer.

How far out from the release date do they typically release the soundtrack?

Really think the name of the thread needs to change since he's been confirmed as the composer for some time now.

This doesn't surprise me, but it's still a shame that he won't use Silvestri's theme. Jackman didn't need to use it as a crutch but only whenever Cap. did something "epic" or "heroic" for lack of a better word. I don't have a problem with him creating his own theme fo the character either, but he could've followed the approach Elfman, Zimmer, and Giacchino did with Schifrin's MI theme for the Mission Impossible movies. They used it whenever it was necessary while mostly relying on their own themes. I still believe Silvestri's theme could work in a more modern CA movie. It's strange how Tyler ignored Doyle's Thor theme for the Thor sequel, but adapted Silvestri's Cap. theme in the same movie. It makes me wonder if that was a creative decision by Tyler. Hopefully Jackman's theme (as well as score) will measure up to Silvestri's.

'Captain America March' is listed at the end of the credits with the other songs used, so they may have ripped it from there and edited it in after Tyler did his score.

I think it's the problem with MCU's scores , there are no really definitive theme for those characters . At least , I'm glad we're getting good composers like Jackman , Tyler Bates and Steven Price

Captain America does have a definitive theme, but Jackman has discarded it. The Captain America March is a wonderful piece that should have remained the character's theme throughout the series, regardless of changes in composers. Although I can understand Jackman wanting to put his own imprint on the score, doubt that he can match the brilliance of Silvestri's theme.

It really is a shame they aren't going to be reusing it since it's a great theme for Cap. Only thing you could say about why they discarded it is that it does sound a bit old-fashioned for where they are trying to take Cap in the modern world.

I felt the perfect place to use it would be softly in the museum scene where he takes the costume just a nod to it.

That is a shame, but, BUT I am hoping that while Cap does get a new theme in TWS, they still retain echoes of his TFA theme during key moments in the film. The article only seemed to say that he was getting a whole new theme, but maybe we'll hear the beautiful old one pop up in this one.

How does that work, anyway? Does Silvestri get royalties if they borrow the theme?

We'll see, I guess.

Scores are the least bit of concern for me with this movie, so I'm kind of okay with the changes to the score, so long as the score fits the movie and sets the tone.

ETA: now I want to go back and listen to my Captain America soundtrack. Thanks guys!

It didn't sound old fashioned all the time in CA:TFA though especially in tracks like "Howling Commandos Montage" and "Motorcycle Mayhem". Heck Silvestri subtlely used it in The Avengers, which of course took place in the modern world. So I think the theme could still work in certain moments of this sequel.

Doing that for flashback WW2 scenes (if there are any) or heroic moments would be nice and would be a good reason to use it . Are there even previews of the score like we did for IM3 ?

They haven't released any samples, the track listing, or cover art yet. And also haven't mentioned if the music will be released in cd form, digitally, or both. Which is odd they haven't at this point since the movie (and soundtrack) will be released less than a month. According to amazon the soundtrack is supposedly coming out April 1.

The artwork and track listing was posted on amazon.fr. I avoided posting the track list in case of spoilers, but if you want to see the track listing it's in this link.

Those songs seem really eerie/haunting, which I think is perfect for this movie.
