I won't overstate my feelings but I gave SuckerPunch a 6.5 out of 10. I found it to have great ideas but the some of it's casting and execution hurt it badly. I have a sort of affection for it though.

I don't get the hate.

We will see Zod in his black "under armor" suit since we saw him in it during set pics. I wonder if his armor just gets destroyed? Or maybe he just takes off the armor so he can square off with Superman man to man. Similar like how the Predator took off his stuff to fight arnold.

If anything I''m thinking that the final fight is with him and the armor since Zod is likely to take any advantage that he can get in order to defeat Superman.

That works too. I would be fine with either way.

You're right. This isn't your childhood icon. Man of Steel is a modern tale because your Superman doesn't connect with the audience anymore.

The trailers and interviews have done little, if anything, to convince me this is a film worth seeing. The impression I get is that there's something familiar about this film, but it's been taken into Batman territory.

The final trailer will be *the* deciding factor. Either I'll have a change of heart and go see this, or I won't.

I think it is in some ways analogous to the way that James Bond has remained a hard drinking, womanizing, imperialist dinosaur, but the character has somehow taken on some of the ambiance of the modern world.

We'll see how it turns out, eh?
The thing with Bond was that he was an anachronistic, imperialist dinosaur from the very beginning. He was never truly a contemporary or modern character. He was a fantasy for postwar Britain, which was undergoing an identity crisis, losing its empire, suffering through continued rationing and reconstruction, and playing second fiddle to the USA. That Bond represented the good old days is a large part of what his appeal was to 1950s British readers. I don't know if Superman as a character works in the same way.

I think the thing is that Bond has some sort of "invisible continuity" in some sense of the word, even though the PERSONALITIES of him as differ depending on the actors. Whereas CBM's tend to have broken continuity and are often standalone. It's odd, but true.

For some reason I think it's really cool that there's a 7-Eleven in the background. It's those types of little things that make it feel set in 'our' world.

A while back that 7 Eleven was a hot topic of discussion

This is the Superman they should have launched in 2006. But anyway, here it is now.

how do you know that MOS in 2006 would make enough money for a sequel? maybe it would underperform at the same date in the same year.

Sucker punch problem was that Synder tried to delve into territory that he has no business going into, if he had just made it an action film with cool fight scenes then it would have been a raging success. Have baby face and her crew be a bunch of hot chics who work for a secret organisation to put down super natural beings. Not very original I know but dam it would have made more money.

Hate it as much as you want but Singers Superman needed to happen for us to get this, dun dun dun so in the grand scheme of things we owe Singer a thanks in a way.

The suit plays a huge part in this, give Reeve the same suit and let him train using today's methods and taking today's supplements. Cavill just looks more modern and the muscles on the suit help with the illusion of Superman.

For me, Cavill and Reeve both look like perfect Supermen. That sounds like a contradiction in itself, but as there's so many variations of the Superman 'look' in the comics over the years, there's no single defining feature which you can explicitly say makes one actor more of a Superman than the other.

Take a Jim Lee picture -

and a Chris Sprouse one ....

Very different styles, but both instantly recognisable as Superman - dark hair, strong jawline, strong neck, intense stares, near perfect features, and so on. Cavill and Reeve possess the same qualities needed for the character but obviously have their own defining features too.
