Eh, you really think they're going to be called that? Those are their names before they become their supernatural counterparts...which it seems in all likelihood they will start off as. I doubt they will go into the deep history of the Collector's backstory or the Controller who was an Iron Man villain/common criminal.

I agree he is bottom of the barrel. This whole mind control thing is more 50s b movie. Doesn't really suit or set the tone well for the start of a new sci-fi franchise.

My point is rather than even risking confusing dumb ol audience, they often do it this way, never once calling Vanko Whiplash or calling Shmidt Red Skull. Or teasing names like Iron Monger and Abomination for the rest of the movie calling them Stane and Blonsky.

Now I understand GotG brings us where we've never gone at a cosmic level, so hang-ups like that are less of a problem. But I'd rather them just avoid it altogether.

Yeah...I just can't see them calling those two by their names. I mean, can you really see someone calling Controller "Basil" or someone calling this immortal Collector Taneleer? Maybe if his wife is alive in the movie, but every other character would refer to him as the Collector.

They'd better not avoid the name Rocket Raccoon and give him some other name because they think it sounds too ridiculous and the audience will never buy into it.

See I love that. "The Collector" is an awesome name. Its almost to the point of creepy, but knowing how powerful he is, its just intriguingly sinister.

Anyway, my point is merely that I dont care one way or the other about The Controller. Like... at all. If even one of the other candidates are in this film (Thanos, Magus, Korvac, Collector) I won't even care that The Controller is there. No biggie.

Agreed. But don't you think they'll mostly just call him Rocket?

I know what you mean. I saw the movie 6 times in theaters with like 5 or 6 different people. My brother, sister, father, and two of my friends had no idea who he was.

The cool thing was they still managed to get the point across. He's a big, powerful creep. Maybe it wasn't quite clear that he was obsessed with death, but it looked like he welcomed deadly encounter. Which was plenty of a tease considering we saw him for 5 seconds and he didnt utter a single word.

Marvel should get John Cleese as Basil the Controller.

the audience probably only heard the name thanos from a selected few in the theatre who got excited, but yeah i hope thanos is really in the forefront. this villain needs to be built up. it can't just be this villain(henchmen) is so bad, but wait till you meet his boss who is even badder.

My nieces and nephews recognised him as Thanos. But that's because of Superhero Squad. They watch A:EMH too.

Having the Collector in this movie would sell how bad Thanos is that he's taken to doing something so creepy and contrary to freedom in order to protect against Thanos.

It could seem like a really desperate measure which the Collector feels he has no other choice even though he himself might believe in freedom rights. He might see it as doing the wrong thing for a greater good. But the Guardians might not see it that way because no-one should be held captive against their will. They could reason they'll deal with Thanos as and when he comes but the Collector already has this prophecy of doom and believes the future is already written.

yeah once he comes out in GotG and makes himself known to the public then it won't be a problem. the Avengers thing was basically a shout out to the comic readers and a sign to everyone else that this guys gunna be back and mean business basically.

That is a great point man... "I have to collect this stuff because Thanos exists. And knowing Thanos exists, I know the universe will eventually be partially destroyed."

Maybe The Collecter has even already collected the Infinity Gauntlet minus the gems (as this movie is supposed to be set in the future) and Thanos takes it.

wait so thanos just steals a useless gauntlet? he puts the gems on his own gauntlet he always wears, he doesn't need to steal a new one. it could just as easily have been on his helmet or his shirt. the gauntlet was just where he put the gems on.

Ummm... I believe your mistaken. Nevertheless its somewhat symbolic, taking the gauntlet means he's learned the secret to infinite power over reality. And he can start his quest to find the gems.

Thanks. No-one likes slavery, and often villains try to justify their actions in their own mind as to why their own villainous actions are acceptable. The Guardians could be fighting against enslavement (not just of them but others in the galaxy) and would never accept the Collector's reasoning.

The Collector would of course accuse them of being short-sighted and not seeing the full picture. But really, would anyone here simply accept a lesser evil - eg killing 100 people to save a million - over a greater evil without trying to find another way first, especially if say your family or friends are in those 100 people?

I think the Collector could offer a great opportunity to allow for some Star Trek-type moralising and debates. Maybe one of the Guardians would stand in the Dr McCoy position and want to save everyone from mass abduction simply because it's wrong, whereas someone else (not sure who) could stand in the Spock position and think that perhaps there is some merit to the Collector's methods if you think about the greater good. Then you could get someone representing Captain Kirk who could see both sides of the argument, but ultimately agrees that mass enslavement is wrong, even if it means jeopardising the future and allowing the possibility of Thanos to be completely victorious.

So yeah, I think the Collector would add a real depth to the movie lifting it beyond just another all-action sci-fi flick.

Or, it could just be a sci-fi crime drama about the universe's biggest and most OCD kleptomaniac.

help me out here. i have read thanos quest and the infinity gauntlet. all i saw was thanos go after gems. i never saw the part where he went after the gauntlets he wears. did i miss that? not a big deal just that from what you said it makes it appear like the collector would collect a gauntlet with no gems then in turn you would have thanos take that gauntlet that has no gems. like you later stated as a symbolic gesture.

i think a real gesture would be getting the reality gem from the collector. like when thanos went after all the gems, he outsmarted, conned or bested the elders for their gems.

So was that "Terrence Stamp is the Collector" thread really anything genuine? Or is it just because he was actually in a 1960s film called "The Collector" as a collector, that this "scoop" would be technically true in a way?
