If this gets made I hope they bring Doc's plane to the big screen, the way it is described in The Squeaking Goblin is awesome and I think with modern technology it will look incredible onscreen.

Anyone ever see the original movie from the 70s? I've heard bad things but kinda curious to check it out.

Doc was originally published from 1933 -1949....in the mid 1960's Bantam Books started re-publishing them. They commissioned James Bama (the premier cover artist of the day) to do the new covers. They told him to make him look different and Science fictiony....thus the enhanced widows peak and helmet look was born.

Here is a pic of Doc as he appeared in the 30's -

Right. Even the paintings in the 30's (I posted one above) did not show him as actually described in the stories. Doc had a very short close to the scalp haircut. He had a "widow's peak" (where the hair comes down more onto the forehead in a slight point) that the original covers didn't show but the Bama ones over enhanced (but it has become the style most people recognize). The funny thing about the "helmet" comments....in the stories, sometimes Doc does put on a close fitting helmet when going into combat....so Bama's pics are like a homage to that point.

Yes. The 1975 movie DOC SAVAGE: THE MAN OF BRONZE starring Ron Ely is pretty bad. Most Doc fans have a copy but we aren't proud of it. It's very campy and low budget. Luckily....a fan recently made a fanedit of the movie. He took out 20 some minutes of the camp, replaced some originally goofy music and a song, created some new better special effects, and even remade the opening section of the film in a much better way than originally done. You can look around the net for info on it under it's title DOC SAVAGE DETARNISHED. I have a copy, it's a hundred times better than the original (still not the best movie, but I really can't describe how embarrassed I used to be by the movie).

Next to Batman, DOC SAVAGE is my favorite Character.
The latest book by Will Murray was a FUN read with Doc and his father going to Skull Island meetin King Kong.

Instead of a live-action, I would read see an animated movie done in a style like the
"Adventures of Tin-Tin".

Thanks I'm gonna check that out.

C. Lee, how do you feel about Shane Black possibly bringing it to the screen?

After seeing what form Shane Black is in with Iron Man 3, I'll be all over whatever his next project will be.

Just curious, does anyone know how Black got the Iron Man 3 gig? Was it just because RDJ worked with him before? Because Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was a great movie, but it came out a while ago and hardly anyone saw it. I just wonder how you can go from making one obscure movie and direct nothing for years and then land the directorial gig of the decade.

Somebody knows somebody. How do any indie directors get massive tentpole gigs?

KKBB is part of how Favreau got Marvel on board with casting Downey. Black then did some consulting work (I think for free) on IM1 & 2.

Black was trying to develop another Lethal Weapon with Gibson before Gibson's meltdown. I think it was Downey who then suggested Black to Marvel for IM3.

Something like that.

C. Lee, would you say something like the movie Jack Reacher set in the 1930's would make for a good Doc Savage film?

It sounds good to me. He's a good action writer and director, and Doc needs to be an action movie. Also, since he has been talking for several years about doing one, he isn't just someone who comes along and jumps on some project not really knowing anything about it.

I bet there will be talk about it, but it won't happen. I like Reynolds, but don't see him in the part.

I didn't see the movie (and haven't read any of those books) so I can't really say.

Definitely give it a watch when it comes out on DVD... I hadn't read the books either and knew nothing about it, and I was very pleasantly surprised at how good the movie was.

The only thing I know about the character is, some people have told me he was described in the books a lot like Doc. In any case, I will give it a look when it comes out on DVD.

This is the original painting of Doc that James Bama did for the first issue of the Bantam Books release.

You will notice that the hair is more normal looking, although still with a prominant "widow's peak". The publishers told him to make him look more strange or science fictiony. And so he changed it to look this way -

The live action version will probably opt for the first image.

Definately. If they were to do an animated movie like what marvel and DC are doing now, they would most likely go for the Bama look. But I think any live action production will go with the regular looking hair. face it, the best thing about the '75 Doc movie was Ron Ely....the regular hair looked great on him.

The artist James Bama used model/actor Steve Holland (1950's Flash Gordon on TV) as Doc for his paintings.

Ron Ely played Doc in the 1975 movie.
