'Iron Man 3' Director Shane Black to Direct 'Doc Savage' for Sony

Quote:
Sony Pictures Entertainment has closed its deal with "Iron Man 3" director Shane Black to co-write and direct "Doc Savage," which Black is eyeing as his next film.

One of the most popular characters of the pulps of the 1930s and 40s, Doc Savage was also popularized on radio, film and television. He is a scientist, physician, adventurer, inventor, explorer and researcher. He has been trained since birth to be nearly superhuman in every way, with outstanding strength, a photographic memory, and vast knowledge and intelligence. He uses his skills and powers to punish evil wherever in the world he finds it.

Black co-wrote the screenplay with Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry, based on the hero of pulp novels, films, and comic books.

Neal H. Moritz is producing the project with Ori Marmur through his Original Film banner. Michael Usland will also serve as a producer on the film.

Sam Dickerman and Lauren Abrahams are overseeing the title for Columbia Pictures along with Hannah Minghella, Sony's president of production who made the announcement with studio president Doug Belgrad.

"We couldn't be more excited to be building a franchise from the ground up with Shane and this team," said Minghella. "Shane and Neal have a fantastic understanding of the character and a great take on the material and we can't wait to get this production up and running.”

Black most recently co-wrote and directed "Iron Man 3," which has grossed more than $700 million since opening a little more than one week ago. He previously wrote and directed "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang."

Black is represented by WME and attorney Alan Hergott.

Yeah, I think Sony needs a new franchise like this. If it does well this **** can go the Indy Jones route if they find charismatic enough casts. And after IM3 nobody is exactly going to tell Black no if he wants to do a project right now.

If Daniel Craig wasn't already doing James Bond, I'd say cast him as Clark Savage.

I don't know anything about Doc Savage, but if Shane Black's making it, I'm in.

Eh sounds too much like RDJ's Sherlock. If a protagonist is so smart and perfect, where's the suspense?

That's how heroes were back in the day. They were supposed to be infallible because thats what the world needed. But his main flaw is that he sucks at dealing with women and romance. He's like the only one on the team that can't seem to get any.

Really pleased for C Lee that Doc Savage will be getting his day on the big screen, and I'm looking forward to it myself as I love the old pulp heroes style, plus Black is awesome.

A Shane Black Batman/Doc Savage 1930's set team up. If the world hasn't collapsed from the existence of The Avengers or Pacific Rim, that might be the thing to do it.

The Batman pic was just me being struck by how much of a pulp creation Batman really was. Although the mentioned crossover would be amazing.

It was recently explained to me that the appeal of Buckaroo Banzai is similar, as he's the exact same sort of omni-competent, adventurous character, just transplanted into the 80's. So now I have to watch that film again despite my memories of it being dire (the Marvel Comics adapatation was pretty cool though)

Doc Savage is a very cool and classic character, maybe Shane Black will redeem himself to me with this after what he did with Iron Man.

He definitely needs to redeem himself after having made the best Marvel Studios movie to date, and a great entry in his filmography!

There aren't that many built dudes in the industry that can really pull it off, unless you just have them really bulk up. Right now Armie Hammer and Hemsworth are two that I think already have the type of frame needed, but depends on how Shane wants to go.
