Is there any word on Weaving possibly returning? I feel we haven't heard much about the "big bad" in the movie (excluding the most recent soundbites from RR).

So it appears we finally have our "Big Bad"/mastermind. The new head of SHIELD doing dirty work, possibly a comic villain in disguise? Just awesome.

Overall, Phase 2 is just gonna rock.

I have also been thinking its possible for Schmidt to have been thrown threw time as well or instead of space.

Shunted into the cube maybe? The cube that was in SHIELD hands for many years, where Alexander may have had access to it. It may be a bit convoluted for a film, but that is a way in which the Skull could have influenced events.

Agreed that it fixes the Weaving problem. Schmidt wasn't frozen in ice, so he would have aged. Tying SHIELD to HYDRA would make so much since as well. I think Red Skull returning also would serve this film's theme. Look at who is included, Bucky, Zola, etc. This film seems to be very much about the ghost's of Captain America's past coming back to haunt him, and the years have changed everyone in various ways. The Red Skull would illustrate this theme better than Zemo or anyone else that could be selected for the film.

Tying SHIELD to HYDRA opens the doors for several characters as well, specifically Spider-Woman. That would be an awesome way to introduce her in Cap 3, as one of Pierce's sleeper agents and would be very true to the comics in its own way.

And I like your idea of how it ties into the themes of the movie, I never looked at it that way.

Also, I remember Feige saying that Cap 2 out of all the phase 2 movies (beside GotG) particularly sets things up in A2 and one of the writers for WS said that it's about "setting up where alliances lie come A2. Wonder how SHIELD being tied to HYDRA would effect that?

The idea doesn't seem so farfetched now, especially given the changes seen with two certain characters in Iron Man 3.

Is this because Hugo Weaving isn't interested in returning?

I get the feeling that guy isn't coming back. Didn't seem like he enjoyed his time or how they handled the character. I thought they squandered a potentially great villain because of the rush to get to The Avengers, but hey I can't complain too much since The Avengers was so epic.

Do you even know anything about the character? Having the codename of Spider-Woman as an agent would be a very dumb reason not to introduce her into the MCU, where she'd fit in pretty much perfectly.

I thought from the beginning that Redford was most likely playing the villain due to Fury being shunned out of Shield... and a few folks here said that was silly to think Redford would come on as a villain....

Spider-Woman could be possible down the line given their obvious interest in having a female lead.

I think bringing HYDRA back and tying them to SHIELD would be possibly interesting for an A2 lead in. I'm wondering if Redford is indeed the Skull, if he will tease Thanos.

My current theory also is Redford is the Red Skull in disguise. I think the Alexander name is definitely not an accident, and I think they're doing the Dell Rusk thing without being that obvious. Plus, they keep saying Cap 2 will reveal secrets about the MCU. Well, Red Skull has seen the universe. It makes too much sense to me.
Now this twist I can totally get behind. If this is true then I say bring it.

he's not pulling his strings. Bank it. This movie is being labeled as Avengers 1.5...there will be much more going on than the winter soldier. He said he's a villain...doesn't mean he's THE villain.

My assumption is also that Pierce is the Red Skull in surprise. Either that or he's a HYDRA sleeper agent.

Or who knows, maybe him being the bad guy is just him being a triple agent.

He said on Twitter that he has been on set a few days but it doesn't sound like he's needed every day for filming.

My general feeling that Redford 'villainy' is more about being a corrupt or overly officious SHIELD director who has it in for Fury and forces certain agents to go AWOL.

I don't think he is gonna be anyone that exciting - just someone who, because of some personal gripe or by-the-book nature orders SHIELD to apprehend Cap and his buddies.
