Default TMOS Reviews Thread - Non Spoiler Review and Discussion

The other thread has just become completely taken over by spoilers and speculation there is no review talk really going on anymore.

Someone posted a twitter posting of this guys review last night, and here's the whole thing. Spoiler free.

http://johnpayne891.wordpress.com/20...ymbol-of-hope/

EDIT: Folks, post your critic reviews here as they come in. If you've found any that are quite spoilery, use the spoiler tags. Some people just want to get a feel of how the movie is without getting into details and crucial plot elements.

Yeah, he really didn't really seem to enjoy about the process of filming GL. I don't think it was the right film for him.

He's a talented filmmaker for sure. And up until that point he had done a "Superhero" film in the Zorro movies so I can see why he'd feel somewhat comfortable in believing he can tackle that genre.

But he just bit off wayyy more than he could chew and he seemed to realize it early on.

That wouldn't hurt at all.

Yeah, Campbell isn't a bad director. He just wasn't the right fit for GL. But there were also script issues. And I'm pretty sure it wasn't his idea to make the suit all CGI, which is where WAY too much of the money went.

In other news, Bryan Cranston is playing Lex Luthor, Emily Blunt is Wonder Woman, Benedict Cumberbatch is Martian Manhunter, and that guy from Teen Wolf is Batman.

because the movie’s ******* awesome. Let’s start with that, so it’s easier to sell something when you have great visuals, great music, great action, but more importantly, great characters and great writers. You have it.

if you read/listen to Colliders Hans Zimmer interview there are little spoilers in there. so be careful. note- nothing big, just if you are staying truly spoiler free.

Me.
And I actually meant if it was in a review. I have the same reaction to that comment as I would to someone on twitter saying they thought the movie was awesome.

Nice find with the tweets.

For some reason I think the professional reviews are going to be mixed.

I wouldn't say mixed, but there are gonna be some who don't like it because of the CGI or too much action since I am seeing tons of "amazing action and lots of action". I think more and more THIS Superman movie was for us! not the critics.
Still guessing a 85 on RT and probably a 7.6 average rating.

Haha, one thing I noticed when searching for reaction tweets: most people are acting like "please don't judge me, but I'm actually excited for Man of Steel" and stuff like that.

From the open discussion thread

I've never been a huge fan of Superman despite reading plenty of his comics, and I tend to find Marvel's characters more rich, but this film definitely gave me an new appreciation for Superman and a new found hope in the future of DC properties. It's not as good as The Avengers or The Dark Knight, but as far as comic book origin movies circa Batman Begins, I found this film to be well above average and it certainly gets rid of the bad taste that The Dark Knight Rises left me.

The cast is admirable all the way around minus one exception. Shannon as Zod delivers the best villain performance since Heath Ledger, Crowe and Costner both steal every frame they appear in, and Cavill, while not quite the presence one might of hoped for DC's flagship character, is able to hold his own surrounded by a star studded cast. The one exception is Adams as Lane who not only is placed in an all to familiar damsel in distress role, but never really embodies the key elements that made the Lois Lane character so popular amongst comic book audiences. Of all the characters, she had the most liberties taken.

Tonally, Man of Steel deviates itself from Nolan's Batman films and plays out much more like a film that belongs in the Marvel-verse. This is a Snyder and David Goyer film, definitely not a Nolan film. The religious motifs are undertones, not overtones like they were so proudly displayed in the last Superman film.
Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
Although I would have much preferred Snyder use the farm boy entering the big city approach to Superman rather than the alien finding himself storyline, I felt Snyder did a good job assimilating the two with the former most certainly to be played out in subsequent sequels given the ending to the film.

Overall, as far as recent comic book films go, I'd give this a solid 8/10. A little ahead of Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man 3 which I would give all around a seven, and about on the same level as other films I'd give an eight to such as Iron Man 1 and Batman Begins. My only chief complaint is that I wish they would have sacrificed some of the extensive action sequence at the end to give room for a little more personal, character interactions to compliment what was truly an amazing cast. Story was good although a little quickly paced, surprising for a 150 minute movie, special effects were choppy on occasion but state-of-the-art for the most part, and Hans Zimmer's score was great! It would be a shame if this only leads up to two more sequels (Hollywood needs to stop glorifying the trilogy!). Here's to hoping this is a pillar that WB/DC builds off of!
