Wonder if such a large drop off is due to the competition it faced, IM3 did not get the same caliber of competition till STID.

Haven't checked back here in a few days. Glad to see it's managed all the milestones now. $400m domestic, $800m overseas, $1.2B worldwide. Amazing performance smashing expectations.

Disney's purchase of Marvel was a bargain if you think about it.

If RDJ's contract isn't so expensive AND there's no commitment to do two Avengers movies, there will be Iron Man 4 just for the sake of doing "the most successful continuous solo superhero series"

True. But then again Iron Man 3 came out when classes were still in session while Man of Steel opened when it's already summer vacation for almost everyone, the comparison is not so direct.

So what would the Spider-Man total be today, adjusted for inflation...?

And did it sell more tickets than Iron-Man 3?

Adjusted for inflation (2013 ticket prices):

The Avengers - $609,539,700
The Dark Knight - $591,175,600
Spider-Man - $551,708,900

And yes definitely it sold more tickets than IM3.

I don't don't get how Avengers gross goes down with inflation(but other 2012 movies don't). Was ticket prices REALLY that high on May 4th last year?

Crazy how IR3 is now the top-grossing Marvel solo superhero film at the domestic box-office.

Yeah I know about price inflation, but its still a great achievement!

Agreed! It's going to have that title for awhile I think. Not the best solo Marvel film, but a damn good one. Well deserved. This should give Shane Black numerous opportunities in the future.

Why single that lone variable out? If you're going to do that then take them all into account. Otherwise it just looks like trying to get a desired result rather than just seeing what actually is.

Well, I mean...Gone With The Wind adjusts to 1.6 billion from domestic alone. If that movie were released today instead, does anyone actually believe that's how much it would earn at the box office? Not a snowball's chance in hell.

That is exactly the point that sticks out for me. The goal of adjusting earnings is supposedly to show how much each film's gross means in today's dollars. Yet there are too many other factors involved for that to be a truly meaningful measure. For instance, movie tickets cost far less back then, there was no competition from television and the Internet and many films were re-released repeatedly over the years.

In the case of re-releases, the adjustment chart only takes into account inflation for the total gross of a film based on the year it was initially released. This skews the results since ticket prices for each subsequent release aren't adjusted to reflect the prices at the time of each release. GWTW has been released countless times, but its gross is adjusted for 1939, rather than for every year it was back in theaters. That doesn't give an accurate indication of the true adjusted gross, only an approximation.

If you adjust for inflation in 2012 The Hobbit actually edged out Skyfall domestically.

Friday report: Iron Man 3 grossed an estimated $420,000 to bring it's total at $404,452,000.

It is still hanging on to the 10th spot (same position as last weekend) as The Internship and The Purge both drop out of the top 10 to make way for new titles The Heat and White House Down.

The early estimate for Saturday is $630,000, bringing Iron Man 3's domestic total to $405 million. It will continue to earn some money with double features and discount theaters for another month or so.

The only other film on the all time list that it has a reasonable shot of beating is THG at $408M. I think it'll just pass it and stay at the #13 spot.

Its still being shown least till Wednesday at first run theaters here in Columbus, down to maybe three showings a day now, but still hanging in. For a movie that has gotten slammed for everything that is wrong with it, seems to not be keeping people away.

It's phenomenal box office anyway you slice it. At this point I don't care as I'm not actually seeing any of the returns, and I'm not even sure I'd like to see this MCU drag out for years on end if quality starts to deteriorate. The product hasn't really been improving since 2008, outside of Avengers. I'd say Avengers 2 has a lot of promise, and if it is every bit as good if not better than A1, then it probably deserves an even bigger box office haul. I get that "deserves" is highly subjective, but I don't feel IM3 deserved its box office alone and was significantly bumped by the Avengers effect. Of course you have to look at the whole. Same can be said for the TF sequels, or even the Hobbit. And the end of the day, you earn what you make, I get that.

At this point its looking like the MCU COULD... COULD... rival the likes of Star Wars and Harry Potter as a movie franchise. Long ways to go. The quality of the films, as those franchises wore along, never seemed to fluctuate too significantly. As long as they can maintain Avengers level type popcorn and entertainment, let these films make as much money as humanly possible for all I care, because that's good enough for me.
