I do agree. I think you are right it saying that they waited too long for the sequel. This is a different movie to the first one. You'll have to make up your own mind if it is better or not.
There's plenty of action, some really brilliantly choreographed stuff that gets hinted at in the trailers. Some new expanded sets of the Ent, though maybe that's just really good CG, visually the film is stunning. One can only imagine what JJ will achieve in terms of production values with a Star Wars budget. Its good news for them that they bagged JJ.
As for NuTrek, if a 3rd gets made, maybe a new director will bring something else to it.

I hope that the passage of time doesn't hurt this franchise. They really waited way too long for the sequel to come out. As a general rule of thumb, you should never have more than 3 years pass between sequels, you need to strike while the Iron is hot.

Having said that, I hope that we don't have to wait 4 years for the next one. Abrams will be busy on Star Wars for 2015, but I would hope they could have another Trek by 2016.

If Abrams can't do the next one, I hope they can find another director who will continue J.J. terrific sense of action, and edge of your seat thrill ride.

After rewatching the movies, I have to say there are only 3 Trek movies that really stand out. ST2:TWOK, ST: First Contact, and ST 2009. The other movies the passage of time has not been kind to.

Personally I think Nick Meyer's second Star Trek, Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country is just almost as good as The Wrath of Khan.

I would agree. I think TWOK is teh best of the Trek films, followed very closely by TUC. ST09 is the third best IMO.

I need to see STID again to make up my mind where it stands in my mind lol

Depending on the property, you gotta strike the iron when it's hot. People can wait 10 years for Star Wars sequels just fine; with Star Trek, it has been newly knighted as being 'cool' finally. But you gotta keep the people interested because at the end of the day, at a drop of a hat, people will drop Star Trek for the hotter girl (Star Wars).

Star Trek as a franchise is as iconic as it is vulnerable.

Same here. I was super surprised at how much I liked that one when I went through all the movies for the first time recently. Sometimes I think I even like The Voyage Home better than Wrath of Khan, it's such a fun movie.

In the 3rd one we're going to miss the lens flares!

I've never had a problem with Abrams' lens flares per se, it just seems like a very very strange decision he's made that that's what he's going to hang his hat on; that that's going to be his "thing".

I don't mind lens flares. Looks like there will be some in Man of Steel too.

My deal with the lens flairs in Star Trek 09 is that they were incorporated into the set design. In the background there were lights on the walls of the Bridge that served no purpose other than just to be really bright and to create lens flares when peoples heads moved.

I liked the lens-flare in the 09 film, it adds to the style and setting of the film.
The bright, gleaming, and hopeful future.

Oh, I thought the bridge looked beautiful with all those lights.

Without getting into any spoilers, can someone who's seen the film give a list of TOS episodes to watch in preparation before watching the film to catch any small in jokes or references?

Guys, I think this settles the debate once and for all. J.J. includes lens flares to add realism and authenticity to his Trek films. It is just the way that being in a real spaceship looks. Take this recent video from Canadian Astronaut Chris Hadfield up on the International Space Station. Look at all the lens flares:

VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:

See guys, it is just the way it is in space. Abrams is just trying to be realistic like Nolan.

Sort of like the lens flares, its like the opposite of the grit of the Dark Knight.

First time I looked at the video the first thing that came to mind was 'JJ was right!'. Great vid that one.

SWEET Star Trek ID has 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Visually spectacular and suitably action packed, Star Trek Into Darkness is a rock-solid installment in the venerable sci-fi franchise, even if it's not as fresh as its predecessor.

I'm so excited for the most part I'm going into this film practically unspoiled just like the first film. I can't wait to watch this in 3D on Thursday night.

Something to think about, it's the first time there's ever been successive critically acclaimed movies in the franchises history.

Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock, and Voyage Home all received positive receptions.

Very true, and also, there was no internet full of critics with an affinity for Transformers-type eye candy movies.

Mentioning particular episodes will spoil it!
Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:

Space Seed & Wrath of Khan
For minor references about a ship and aliens in the movie:
Mudds Women & I Mudd
The Troube With Tribbles, Errand of Mercy was the 1st episode with Klingons, + Day of the Dove, A Private Little War
Just watch the whole series to see how some of the major technological discrepancies really don't jibe all that well with what technology is in the Star Trek Universe. Might as well have stuck a Death Star in there.
For some unorthodox surgery on a torpedo, I recommend The Undiscovered Country.
For Scotty up to mischief The Search for Spock.
