Default Guy Ritchie Revives A "King Arthur" Saga

By Garth Franklin Monday January 27th 2014 05:30PM
Warner Bros. Pictures is having another go at making a "King Arthur" film after several failed attempts, this time though the plan is more ambitious.
Guy Ritchie, who was linked once before, is again said to be in the director's chair for this big-budget fantasy retelling of the Arthur legend.
The plan is for the project to run six films, with Joby Harold having penned the script for the first. Akiva Goldsman, Lionel Wigram and Harold and Tory Tunnell will produce.
Ritchie and Wigram previously developed a version which fell apart when David Dobkin's "Arthur and Lancelot" looked much closer to production. Ultimately that project never came to fruition due to the expense involved.

How can you do a big budget movie franchise on Arthurian legend? I don't think it can work in this day and age. Large scale TV? Yes. Movie? No.

But I mean, look at Camelot? Camelot flopped.

I don't see why not. Get the right talent involved and I can see it being a success. Especially with Ritchie's visual flair.

I am as well, but a big part of me hopes they jettison the Lancelot-Guinevere angle completely from the story. It's been done well a few times, but it always seems to me like fiction's oldest plot tumor, and when handled in most cases it makes me annoyed as hell we have to spend any time getting through a romance arc we already know about, and one that mostly serves to make our nominal hero sidelined, evil, or pathetic. Plus, Lancelot and the other late romance archetypes are all late additions to the legend, some of which come off more as sociological evidence for the French writers being more kinky than gifted crafters of literature.

I don't want to see Lancelot, the uber-French stereotype. I want to see Cai the Tall and Bedwyr the Ripped (actually a fairly appropriate translation of his original nickname), with the former a huge hooligan berserker and the other a one handed spear master (and hopefully not shanghaied into the Lancelot role). I want to see Gwenhwyfar mab Ogfran, bad when little, worse when big (some complexity beyond being adulterous and hot would be nice). I want to see Gawain, the hawk of May, and Medraut, Arthur's badass nephews (and not his incestuous sons because seriously, the hell!?!?) who inevitably clash when the latter goes to the dark side (hopefully for complex reasons involving Gwenhwyfach, Arthur's sister in law and the original reason for a certain strife.)

And I want to see Arthur, the Red Ravager of Britain, the Battle Duke of the British Kings, slayer of giants and witches. I want to see 13 epic battles, each increasing in heavy metal awesomeness until he finally goes down at Camlann in a decimating and tragic last stand. I want to see Saxons, Pict, Cymry, Romans, and I want to see it all handled with some actual skill.

I want a badass Arthurian legend, dagnabit!

(Also, I am trying to write a book with those above depictions, but I won't complain if Hollywood beats me to it.)

I for one, like the Mordred aspects. Incest and all.

How awesome would it be if the first couple movies where typical Arthurian stuff and then... BAM! King Arthur returns in the future.

That actually would be consistent with the legend, since he was supposed to return someday.

Anyway, I hope this happens. And if it does, Ritchie needs to get Henry Cavill as Lancelot.

The King Arthur movie from 2004 sucked, but I liked the cast. Hopefully they assemble a good group of actors for the Knights of the Round Table.

Only 10 years since last one. Why not try something else?

Arthur is like Robin Hood. It has been done so many times that you can't get people excited about it anymore.

But there's only been like three good ones... Excalibur, Sword in the Stone and um... A Kid in King Arthur's Court?

They didn't do it justice last time. If Guy Ritchie successfully breathed some life into Sherlock Holmes, I'd love to see what he can do with King Arthur.

How could you forget Monty Python and the Holy Grail?!!!

But seriously, yeah, the King Arthur movie with Clive Owen was weak. While Arthur does feel like it's been made and remade a million times, with today's technology, they could make something really spectacular that could rival LOTR or Game of Thrones if done right.

I cant imagine Guy Ritchie making King Arthur without it being an action movie.

Awesome. I love what he did with SHERLOCK HOLMES in terms of modernizing it while remaining faithful to its essence and reverent to the source material. Would love to see something similar done with the story of Arthur, in franchise form.

Some casting ideas, because why the hell not...

King Arthur: Philip Winchester
Lancelot: Henry Cavill
Guinevere: Natalie Dormer
Merlin: Liam Cunningham
Mordred: Ezra Miller
Prince Maleagant: Luke Evans
Morgan le Fay: Robin Wright
Uther Pendragon: Sean Bean (Hey, Uther dies, so it fits)

How similar to Gandalf should Merlin be?

I hope they go with a more Nicol Williamson-ish Merlin. I could see someway like Mark Strong if they go that route.

WB and King Arthur. Let me know when they make up their minds...this isn't the first time Ritchie has been attached. It was Singer then Ritchie, then Dobkin now back to Ritchie.

Charlie Hunnam or Henry Cavill for Arthur.
Tom Hardy or Idris Elba for Lancelot.
Liam Neeson as Merlin.
