The Mastermold programming/logic loop and Terminator AI, although similar, are not the same story.
The Sentinels' programming led to a logical conclusion that the humans that designed them failed to see due to their prejudice: That mutants ARE humans.
You don't even have to say that Mastermold or the Sentinels have an AI evolved to the point of self awareness. They could simply be following the logic of their programs to the most inclusive of parameters.
There is a moral message that carries along with this story.

The Terminator AI story is much more mundane and cliche: AI becomes self aware and therefore evil... blah.

AI would just feel out of place in the X-Men series.

And I agree with people said about Apocalypse, I think it could be great if Apocalypse is behind this. Though I'm not really hopeful for that.

I think if the movie makes it feel like a natural evolution, then AI wouldn't feel too out of place. I think it could work. It's just a waiting game...

I think having Apocalypse behind it would be trying to cram too much into one film. I'm all for him in the next film though.

A reference to Sentinels? : D

Yup, pretty much what I got from that. Although if I am not mistaken Millar already confirmed sentinels.

quote from article

Quote:
Supporters of the robots say they offer a number of advantages: they process information faster than humans, and they are not subject to fear, panic, a desire for revenge or other emotions that can cloud human judgment. Robots can be used to acquire more accurate battlefield data that can help to target fire more precisely and in the process may save lives.

Human rights groups dispute the ability of robots to meet the requirements of international law, including the ability to distinguish between civilians and combatants or to assess proportionality — whether the likely harm to civilians during a military action exceeds the military advantage gained by it. Moreover, in the event that a killer robot breaches international laws causing civilian casualties, it is unclear who could be held responsible or punished.

Seeing epic Sentinel action/hiding would be awesome to have in the film!

I just hope they won't save the Sentinel action until the third act.

I could see Sentinels being featured heavily in one of the time periods, with the mutant characters hiding from them.

Bryan will most definitely try to top his Erik in Concentration Camp in X-men and Nightcrawler's attack in the Whitehouse.

And I'm still hoping for the return of the Xavier voice-over.

Same here.

Off-topic, I was listening to the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack the other day, and found myself wishing that Stewart's narration had made it into the film. Make no mistake: the man they hired did a fine job; my call is a matter of personal preference.
