I hated Mendelsohn. He didn't seem very rich boy arrogant, but rather like a hobo they picked off the streets to be one. I hate the way his mouth moves when he talks, completely uncouth.

That's exactly what I think about the few who think Nolan had no heart when making TDKR

Yes. As much how the film itself felt more like a comic book film, I think some of the dialogue feels very much comic-booky and that's not a bad thing at all.

I really enjoyed all the little bits of pulpiness that worked their way into the series via minor bad guy characters like Chechen, Maroni, Falcone, Flass etc. Nolan has this ability to marry the uber self-serious with just the right amount of cheesiness and somehow it all feels right.

Hey, hey...I like Michael Jai White Blood and Bone as well as Black Dynamite are fun films.

He's the perfect Jax.

I've always thought the exposition in the trilogy was suitably comic-book like and appropriate. Like that scene at the start of TDK where Bruce and Alfred sit at the computer and fill you in on who Harvey is, etc. I can almost see the speech bubbles above their heads. The one time I thought it was a bit rushed was how Alfred knows all about Bane from rumors.

I totally thought we're getting that when I saw the set pics of Bruce being escorted by Blake to the GCPD car.

You know, the first time I saw Stryver fall into the ice, my gut reaction was that they were going to do a Mr. Freeze angle.

I bet Selina was sad when Stryver took the ice dip. She really wanted him.

I thought he gave off something of a man-child vibe, so spoiled and self-obsessed, throwing tantrums when he didn't get his way, whining in that nasally voice of his, believing himself to be the center of the universe... only to have Bane shatter that rather narrow view along with his neck.

Bruce himself had a bit of that man-child vibe going on but for completely different reasons.

Bane is so condescending in that moment it borders on pity. Great scene. Daggett was appropriately obnoxious and sniveling.

While Joker was trying to give Gotham a "better class of criminal" by tossing the idea of the mobs and their only care in the world being money, it didn't go as planned and TDKR ended up showing how snotty-nosed corrupt businessmen now have this idea that they can do whatever they want if they have money. It's like a different version of the same lesson that Joker tried to teach. With Joker, he taught it with the mobs; with Bane, he taught it with the corrupt 1%ers. I loved Daggett myself though...he felt so much like the kind of corrupt businessmen you can read in comics or watch in a cartoon, sort of like some cliche gangster that we see in Gambol(played perfectly by Michael Jai White!).

Thought this might start the "8 year" discussion back up again ( im a s**t disturber)..so ill leave this here. Jett (Batman on Film) wrote this on his FB page. Yes, we all have similar feelings towards the guy, so let's not get into that. Could mean nothing, but I thought it was interesting.

Quote:
That would be a good research project. We know he spent 8 or so years overseas after leaving Gotham. Not sure how long he was "pre-Batman Batman" in BEGINS. He was probably Batman for a year+ between BEGINS and TDK. Not sure how long of a period of time TDK is -- maybe a year itself. Of course we know about the 8 year time period between TDK and RISES. From talking to Chris, I get the feeling that he did suit up as Batman for a while after the end of TDK -- Blake only mentions the last "known sighting" of The Batman. He did build the Batcave under Wayne Manor. He tried to get that energy project going, but shut it down and then disappeared from public sight. With all that said, I have no issue with this take on Batman. It's not the comics where the story goes on forever. If someone has a problem with it, oh well. That's there issue, not mine.

You **** disturber

From talking to Chris...who did he talk to? Nolan? Bale?

And I was always on the side of saying Bruce Wayne didn't retire the cape and cowl that very same night in TDK. With a leg injury such as the one he received from that fall in the end of TDK, it would become worse without any activity, and there was zero of it for three years when Bruce even quit being Bruce after he shut that energy project down. But I always felt like he continued on as Batman just overlooking Gotham becoming safer while the mobs were in prison for that year plus and while the Dent Act was being created and started. Will always feel that way.

"Confirmed sighting" I feel, is used specifically BECAUSE there could have been unconfirmed sightings. If Blake were to say just eight years ago was the last sighting of The Batman that would've put a stamp on that being THE LAST sighting of Batman.

Hehehehe. He meant Nolan.

But I feel the same way Anno. Batman's a ninja AND of course he would lay low...more than usual because he's on the run. So there would be unconfirmed sightings of him. I would guess that Batman overlooked the city until the Dent Act passed. Which could have been how long after TDK?

Indeed. Gordon may have said Batman can take it, but he's not going to go willy-nilly and get the GCPD's attention if he doesn't have to. He'll be that silent protector and continue to watch Gotham City and when he and Gordon officially "won" because of the Dent Act, then he put to rest the cape and cowl. I could see that lasting for maybe a year, or if anything, six months(how long does it take for a piece of legislature to be created and put into law?).

But, interesting if he really spoke to Nolan. I seriously think that's what the Nolan brothers had in mind when they wrote it the way of Blake saying "confirmed sighting".

Bruce was the guy that went to Alfred when he had an injury. Hurting his leg and just working through the pain would be something Bruce would do and that would help such an injury...but then doing zilch for three years...that's why he is the way he is in the beginning of TDKR.

Nothing like a bit of denial from Jett.

Quote:
Christopher Nolan: The end of ‘The Dark Knight’ left the characters in a pretty interesting place. Because we’re trying to make one unified story here, so it’s not another episode, another Batman episode, if you like. For me, that meant really trying to be true to where the characters were left. And Bruce Wayne, as Batman, has made a rather large sacrifice at the end of ’The Dark Knight.’ For that to mean something, he really has to have succeeded in a sense, in his mission. He has to have a Gotham that at least superficially doesn’t need Batman anymore. And that leaves him frozen. And the eight year period is about showing that he’s retired in a sense, that he’s hung up his cape and his cowl. But he hasn’t been able to move on, he’s stuck.

Well let's say Nolan did have Bruce as Batman for a while after TDK's events...why would Nolan even mention such? "And the eight period is about showing that he's retired a year after The Dark Knight"?

Yeah that he\'s retired during the course of 8 years. No contradictions there. I still believe Jett in this case, because I had that same feeling.

Why does Jett try to say TDK took about a year?

It was barely a week in real time, between the bank robbery and Joker's attack on the Pruitt Building/Two-Face's revenge.

I will say this, I think Nolan would have too much pride as a filmmaker to speak in absolute terms about unessential backstory info that isn't truly relevant to the film. He wants his films to speak for themselves.

That said, as writers I would not be at all surprised if they had a more detailed backstory mapped out of when the Dent Act actually took effect, when he actually retired, when the energy project came into play, when he started using the cane and became a recluse etc. That's just screenwriting 101. It's always important to have a good handle on a detailed backstory even if you never disperse all that information in the film, and the Nolasn are sticklers for detail when it comes to their plot mechanics. I remember reading an interview once with Chris or Jonah (can't remember which) where they said they had pages of backstory on The Joker, but of course they never had any intention of revealing any of it. It just helped to do that as an exercise and have those ideas in their head for when they were writing the character.
