Making more than Iron Man 3 money is unlikely. Iron Man 3 is coming out after the successful Avengers' film, is the 3rd film of its series, and has good word of mouth.
It could potentially gross about the same as IM2, but I think making IM1-type money is enough to be considered a success.

SR's box office wasn't the only downfall for a direct sequel. Movies have gotten sequels with much less BO. It was a combination, and the fact that most people were like meh about the movie. Where were they going to go? Superkid? I think WB was clouded by the fact that they were finally getting a Superman movie in theaters. Once they could step away and get some clarity, they went with the reboot. Yeah, they were probably disappointed with the BO, and that was probably a big factor, but where would they have gone? They did the smart thing with the reboot.

I am not worried about MOS. Even my sister who is 13, said she can't wait to see it, me being 27 and a life long superman fan, I nearly fell out of my chair, she likes Taylor swift and teeny poppy garbage like that. It will do just fine, and they have laid the ground work for future stories to tell.

If anyone cares, on the top of American Idol's 2nd hour, MOS TV SPOT #3 was shown.

It wasnt just because of WOM, IM3 had a sustained year long marketing campaign.
A lot of people were complaining last year that the posters For The Avengers
were overemphasizing RDJ , but I think that was because they wanted people to see IM3 as a sequel to The Avengers and it worked .

So how would you replicate the 2012 Olympics and their opening ceremonies for Superman in 2013? Let's be honest, that was a huge part of the Skyfall's marketing. Also, Skyfall didn't have the problem of being a reboot that is trying to distinguish itself from a less than successful prior entry. The situation with Quantum of Solace was different. They had already proven the new Bond/Craig formula with Casino Royale. It made sense for them to raise awareness for Skyfall by celebrating the Bond franchise as a whole. The Superman brand as a whole is rather weak right now outside of geek circles. For all I have criticized Warner Bros marketing along with everyone else here, I have to admit that a 75th anniversary celebration of the brand as whole lead-up to Man of Steel might send some wrong messages and confuse its audience.

I'm pretty sure that figure came from somewhere, I'd like to say Goyer said it on reddit, but I'm not entirely sure.

But superman is far more known around the USA and Foreign markets than Ironman was at that point in time. I suppose the question is how bad was Returns. Everyone acts like this film has to make the climb out of the crapper Begins did, but in the same breath they don't think Returns was Batman and Robin bad, many people here think it was great(not me).

I honestly thought WB would have some balls to the wall Snyder trailers out at this point. Seeing as they went a more Begins type route, I'm all to curious how things will turn out.

I think this film will make far more than IM1 money though. I'd say Transformers money at the very least.

This. It really wasn't entirely about the "disappointing" BO numbers, because the exact same could be said about Batman Begins, but the words disappointed were changed to "modest" because the film was received amazingly. SR was not.

For a first film, the studio just wants a good film, something it can build upon.

If MoS is the great film we think it will be, then no one will need to look at the BO. WB aren't crazy to throw such a huge project and start again from scratch just because the BO was a disappointment.

Saying that, I'm confident that MoS will make $800M minimum.

Arrow has higher ratings than SN and has good reviews, their season finale was fantastic too.

It's really interesting talking about the B.O. for this film because it's really one big fat question mark (it usually is with first films in the series) but with something as iconic as Superman, and as hyped as MoS (which i think it's safe to say is easily one of, if not the most buzzed about film in this summer season) it could really make some big money...or it could really fall flat and we can just chalk it up to people still not giving a crap about superman.

Idol isn't going to get anywhere near 25 million viewers. It's been tumbling in the ratings big time. It will be lucky to get 16mil when all is said and done.

Not in a long time. This has been the lowest rated season by more then a bit. Been really downhill since Simon left.
