Btw in the context of the story of the comic re: Thanagar:

Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
The Kryptonian council are deciding whether to use the death penalty for Dev-Em for murder. It is the first time a murder has been committed in over a thousand years. Some council members feel to use it would make Krypton as "barbaric" as Thanagar.

Can someone explain this "growth codex" stuff? Are the clone embryos or something?

I liked Helen Slater in the role a lot. Unfortunately, the movie was absolutely awful.

This is how Kara explains it (and it's all there really is in the comic) :

"Inside each scout ship is a growth codex. We'll land, explore the immediate area, then activate the codex. The stored embryos will gestate, and soon we'll have an entire Kryptonian population to help us terraform."

As silly as that movie is, Helen Slater was great as Supergirl. I esp. like the opening scenes on Argo City and when she first arrives on Earth. Even Helen said in an interview that she did a movie soon after called "The Legend of Billie Jean" and that movie explored more serious issues about being a young woman and wish that the Supergirl movie did more of that too, took it all more seriously.

Another thing we have to remember is:

Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
We have heard that Kryptonians are genetically engineered to have a specific purpose in society- warrior class, scientist class, worker class- and that Kal-El is the world's only natural birth.

Argo City with Helen, Mia Farrow and Peter O'Toole was the only part of the movie that was done reasonably well. And maybe the Phantom Zone sequence, but that is stretching it a bit.

Was this comic book related by chance?

I agree. I liked the Phantom Zone part because at least it was something different to before. I also like when Supergirl discovers flight. Seeing Henry fly with the zebras in the MOS preview reminded me of when Helen flew over the horses and the mountains.

This was stated in one of the Entertainment Weekly articles. It's not mentioned in the comics (yet.)

I've always liked the 80's Supergirl costume.

Supergirl movie really wasn't that good and Helen Slater shouldn't be the model for casting. She was based on the Supergirl of her time and the character is different now.

It isn't really clear in the comic that she goes back into the cryo-sleep chamber. Don't know why she would after landing on Earth.

I haven't read the full comic, but if I had to guess, she goes back in cause the ship crashes, where safer would you go other than that chamber thing with some kind of protective goo, after the crash the systems could have been damaged and thats why it doesn't open

It's puzzling because

-When exactly did the ship crash? I doubt it was that long ago. If would only be slightly earlier than Kal-El's arrival.

-If Dev-Em leaves the ship, does he end up with Zod in the present day? If so, how?

-If Kara leaves the ship, where would she go? How would she survive? For how long?

-The tribe kill an animal in front of the ship, go back to the hut, and we see that the drawing of the crashing ship is on the wall. It must've been drawn recently because the ship was still there next to them as they were hunting.

-Dev-Em could've put an unconscious Kara back in the sleep pod. Maybe she lost consciousness during the crash. We see earlier that Dev-Em chose not to kill Kara, like he did the others. He says that they were "meant to be together". Maybe he intends to come back and find her again at another time.

-He also says earlier he wants to populate the Earth with Kryptonians by activating the Growth Codex in the ship. Maybe that's his plan, to return to the ship.

-The ship could've been lost under the ice. It could've moved from its original location. Or Kara's pod separated from it somehow?
