I hope against hope that Goyer tosses an issue of Action Comics 775(The Elite) on Snyder's desk(and I suppose nolan's too). Before they green light the sequel.

That would be a great modern story tell. Lot's of people want an iconic earth made threat to superman before we get Braniac/Doomsday/Darksied. I think a Luthor developed Elite would be absolutely the right direction. As long as the leader is charismatic, British and has brain powers. I would also up the group count from 4 to 7.
I would have them all be born of cadmus' approach to replicating superman's powers from genetic samples they recovered from the battle in this film.

I think this solves a few puzzles, including the Lex situation.
This early in the game, there wouldn't even be that whole where the eff is the JLA issue to answer.
