I think for the most part the season just wasn't funny. They took things WAY too serious and not even opportunity for the characters to bounce humor off of each other

^I didn't think they took everything too seriously. Granted, it wasn't AS funny as previous seasons, but I got a lot of laughs out of it. I loved every Tobias and Gob episode. And George Michael's story was just so ridiculous, I had to laugh at it.
The only episodes I didn't like were George Sr.'s and Lindsay's. They just kinda... happened. And I really can't stand Marky Bark.

My only complaint about the season is the total lack of Franklin.

The narration this season seemed less intrusive than s3, but I never minded it to begin with so maybe I'm not the best judge.

I never minded it either. It's always been a mainstay and one of the charms of the series.

Perhaps Franklin actually would have tipped African Americans

So did anyone else notice Zach Galifinakis's cameo? He is sitting next to Lindsay on the plane in her first episode, dressed in weird Indian attire. I was waiting for something to come of it but it never does. He is just....there. Weird.

Are you actually surprised that Arrested Development film nonspeaking cameo of Zach Galifinakis?

EDIT: Just looked at that part again. Are you sure that's him?

By the way, I was reading an IGN review of Tobias' episode and a commenter had a great analysis of Tobias in his episode:

Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
Season 4 had the balls to take a character as seemingly harmless and inarguably beloved as Tobias and dump his ass into the middle of the bleakest situations imaginable.

Here's this delusional guy we've had so much fun with over the years, belly-laughing at his antics and cheering him on during his desperate forays into chasing his dreams. Throughout Seasons 1-3 his actions had no repercussions other than causing general slapstick mayhem and giving his family members headaches.

In Season 4 Tobias is still as delusional as ever, but he's seriously ****ing up someone's life, big time.

A fragile, barely recovering drug addict latches onto this goofball of a man for support and all he can do is obliviously drag her through his failures before driving her back into her own. Suddenly Tobias playing pretend isn't so harmless anymore. He's forcing his dreams onto this poor woman in some sort of emotional rape.

She's degraded in costume on a street for the world to see, she's degraded on a couch fully prepared to sell her body for food, she's degraded in a hospital bed, she's degraded in rehab (with Lucille present to add to her misery, no less) and ultimately she ends up collapsed in a pile of drugs and trash with everyone passing by and ignoring her before one final degradation on a float.

And Tobias simply doesn't notice or care. Not because he's heartless, but because now more than ever before we see that he's disgustingly self-centered. Something we kinda knew before about all the Bluths, but is being shoved down our throats this season.

All of this is made even more bitterly hilarious when we see him proudly stand before a sign that reads, "HOORAY FOR TOBIAS!"

Hooray for Tobias, indeed. Hooray for the ****ing writers. What other character could we still be rooting for, laughing with and loving even after his inadvertent obliteration of a very sick woman who was only seeking help? He gets his comeuppance at the beginning and end of the episode in one of the most hilarious scenes I've ever seen. He breaks a woman in so many places, and he fractures his skull in 4 places (including the patio).

I say one of the reasons I enjoyed this season is that show really went heavy into the black comedy category and through putting each of these character on a road on their own, expose the flaws of each character without a foil or someone bring them back to down to earth. I know some people don't like it, but I really dig how this season was handled.

Yeah, it started out slowly, but when it starting rolling, I think it hits on all cylinders.

Reading around the web, I'm glad fans are mostly loving this season. Many people are saying giving the season a second watch is imperative, and I agree.

It is a flawed season, but it's still got that AD magic. On my first viewing I was very letdown, but after just finishing my second watch I loved it. I even think it's better than season 3, which always felt a bit compromised to me.

Season 4 lacks the manic energy of the ensemble of the first three, but it makes up for it with a deliriously convoluted (in a good way) plot, signature humor and layers upon layers of gags. The only episode I simply dislike is Lindseys first episode. Georges and Michaels are better on rewatch. I didn't like Marky Bark as a character-annoying and unfunny. And Ron Howard inclusion felt like a bit too much, but other than that I don't have any really big complaints.

Gob, Maeby, Tobias and Buster had my favorite episodes. Maeby's in particular surprised me.

I also love the even more warped and twisted humor they introduced this season. It is without a doubt darker than the other seasons and I applauded that. A town of sexual predators? That also want a piece of George Michael? Maeby whoring out her own mother? Buster killing people with that drone? And his Norman Bates-like behavior? Gob f-cking Tony Wonder? All hilariously twisted stuff.

It was actually distracting when the Narrator wasn't making a bunch of Ron Howard in-jokes when he was onscreen, especially concerning Rebel's illegitimacy.

The actor who played Marky also played a meaningless character on the Office. In fact the only decent role he's ever been a part of was when he was on 24.

This is actually my favorite season of the show! Love both George Senior and GOB episodes.
