Default Which Jor-el do you Prefer???

Looks like we got a nice thing going with the Zod thread.....Some great conversation on who was the better Zod, is going on over there....

But what about Jor-el?? Up to now, it's only been Brando....But now we have Crowe!

For my money, it was great to see Jor-el as a man of not only intellect, but ACTION , as portrayed by Crowe!! Remained me of the animated series Jor-el.

Like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYVkyvOM66Y

Brando was great....but he was old (which allowed for a one dimensional Jor-el). Brando could only "talk".

I also liked that Crowe was younger....made sense that a young couple was having a baby. Brando was Tony Randall old! LOL

Now I know that Brando is a legend....He was great for what he could do. But Crowe did more.....

So who is the best Jor-el for you money??

Let the games begin!!!!

I am not counting the Smallville Jor-el... Just dealing with the movies!

So, being old is being one-dimensional. But judging criminals is also an action. Unless you only consider 'action' punching and fighting. And Crowe is 49, just 6 years younger than Brando was in STM. But it doesn't matter since it was Lara giving birth to the child.

But both did great jobs. I vote both.

1) Russel Crowe
2) Marlon Brando
3) Terence Stamp (the coldest approach to Jor-El I've ever seen (the fortress) which was really interesting)

How many of these are we gonna have?

Russell Crowe definitely, Brando's fine in the '78 film but his character wasn't written as well as Crowe's. Also add to that Brando kind if phoned it in fir the most part.

You just hate Man of Steel don't you? I don't see how Brando's cameo was better written than the full part that Crowe had.

I don't hate the film.I think Crowe was the best choice for the part and he did a good job with it.My problem is he didn't really get to play the real meaty scenes that Brando did.

The Zod Trial
The Send off of Kal
The fight with the council

All those scenes were done better in '78.
I think the Zod confrontation was excellent. But he gets rushed through the send off scene, only to get killed by Zod.And he's absent for the rest.Such a waste.

Then he returns for some play-by-play later in the film (which was good),but I can't help feeling his part was wasted.

He didn't get any meaty roles? Really? We must have watched a different film. He's there for the takeoff remember and he said as much to Kal at his birth than Brando did when he sent him off. Also he was a man of action, he also had that great scene with the council and not to mention his scene later with Clark in the Fortress, his epic escape scene with Lois and the one with Zod at the end.

Crowe had far more meat in my opinion (Ooh god did that sound wrong ), dont get me wrong i loved Brando in the '78 film and in the Donner Cut of 2 but his role wasnt the greatest written id say. he had far too much know for my liking. I much prefer that he's an AI in MOS rather than a pre-recorded entity that conveniently anticipated Kal's questions. But each to their own I suppose.

Crowe because Brando clearly didn't give a ****.

However I do agree that Superman: The Movie, even for its time is a better written movie than Man of Steel was with better characterization. But that's what you get when you have the screenwriter of the Godfather working on one movie and the screenwriter of Blade working on another.

Honestly, the fact that Crowe's Jor-el was more interested in saving his Son's life and allowing him to create his own future makes him an 100 times better than the other two Jor-el's since they were more interested in making/forcing Clark to turn into Humanity's savior, where he wasn't allowed to have any types of emotional attachments with anyone.

I think Brando was a better actor but he was not that good as Jor-El so I guess I vote for Crowe.

Russel Crowe, again he was more human and a better developed character than Brando. Plus he seemed to love his son while Brando was just stiff and going through the motions.
Isn't it funny that Christopher's Kal El grows up to look like Marlon Brandon and Henry's grows up to look like Russell Crowe. Good thing that yellow son puts a halt to his aging.

It just felt to me like the same problem TASM had. They felt obligated to hit most of the origin beats, but they just rushed through them as if to say "We know you know the story, just bear with us and we'll try to get through this as quick as possible."

The scene in front of the council didn't have the weight it should've had.It was way too fast. The send off was alright, but I can't get Zod killing him.You completely ruin the iconic scene of both the send off and the trial by removing Jor-El.

In a way,I get TASM not wanting to retread something we saw less than a decade ago,but it's been 30 odd years since we saw the Origin on the big screen.I wouldn't begrudge them taking their time with Krypton.(Heck,in a 2 1/2 hr film,I'd love to have spent a half hour on Krypton)

Crowe was more human? Sure, Brando was more Kryptonian.

Brando...Who else is there?
I give Crowe high marks though. There is not another current day actor I would rather play Jor-El than Crowe.

Crowe's scenes on Krypton were my favorite ones in the film. I thought Kryptonian scenes were truly beautiful and moving. When the film moves to earth is when everything just fell apart for me. But yeah, Crowe is a much better Jorel.

LMAO at this thread. Russell Crowe is a fine actor, but he's NEVER been considered the best actor in the world at any point in his career. Marlon Brando IS THE GOD FATHER. He was considered the biggest actor in the world when he shot STM. The "kids" typing here don't realize Brando in the 70s was like Elivs, the Beattles, Michael Jackson in the 80s, he was the man!!!! He was the absolute best choice to play Jor El. With all due respect to Russell Crowe, Hollywood can pick handful of guys to play Superman's dad but in the 70s it was only one person who could fill that role with believability and respectability. THE GOD FATHER HIMSELF.

I liked Crowe's performance, I thought the script and plot was dumb but he did a fine job. But Brando will always be Superman's dad.

I WAS WONDERING WHEN SOMEBODY WAS pull the G-Father card! LOL
There were a lot of younger actors who should have played Jor-el back then. Richard Dreyfuss , Jon Voight, Roy Scheider......... It was always weird looking at this old couple with this baby boy.
