I'll be back later, but for now, here's that gif of Kal-El's ship.

Got back from an early screening last night, and I must say, I really enjoyed this one! I've never been a huge fan of Superman despite reading plenty of his comics, and I tend to find Marvel's characters more rich, but this film definitely gave me an new appreciation for Superman and a new found hope in the future of DC properties. It's not as good as The Avengers or The Dark Knight, but as far as comic book origin movies circa Batman Begins, I found this film to be well above average and it certainly gets rid of the bad taste that The Dark Knight Rises left me.

The cast is admirable all the way around minus one exception. Shannon as Zod delivers the best villain performance since Heath Ledger, Crowe and Costner both steal every frame they appear in, and Cavill, while not quite the presence one might of hoped for DC's flagship character, is able to hold his own surrounded by a star studded cast. The one exception is Adams as Lane who not only is placed in an all to familiar damsel in distress role, but never really embodies the key elements that made the Lois Lane character so popular amongst comic book audiences. Of all the characters, she had the most liberties taken.

Tonally, Man of Steel deviates itself from Nolan's Batman films and plays out much more like a film that belongs in the Marvel-verse. This is a Snyder and David Goyer film, definitely not a Nolan film. The religious motifs are undertones, not overtones like they were so proudly displayed in the last Superman film. Although I would have much preferred Snyder use the farm boy entering the big city approach to Superman rather than the alien finding himself storyline, I felt Snyder did a good job assimilating the two with the former most certainly to be played out in subsequent sequels given the ending to the film.

Overall, as far as recent comic book films go, I'd give this a solid 8/10. A little ahead of Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man 3 which I would give all around a seven, and about on the same level as other films I'd give an eight to such as Iron Man 1 and Batman Begins. My only chief complaint is that I wish they would have sacrificed some of the extensive action sequence at the end to give room for a little more personal, character interactions to compliment what was truly an amazing cast. Story was good although a little quickly paced, surprising for a 150 minute movie, special effects were choppy on occasion but state-of-the-art for the most part, and Hans Zimmer's score was great! It would be a shame if this only leads up to two more sequels (Hollywood needs to stop glorifying the trilogy!). Here's to hoping this is a pillar that WB/DC builds off of!

For those who have seen the movie.

How deep or rich was the Kryptonian lore presented in the movie?

How much time did we get fleshing out the other Kryptonians like Faora, Nam-Ek, Jax-Ur or others not seen yet? Enough to really make them feel individual?

I get that Lois doesn't get a lot of development or screen time in this movie. That is perfectly understandable. But I don't understand where this "damsel in distress" description or the idea that she doesn't seem like Lois comes from. She seems very Lois-like from the clips and trailers I've seen and it sounds like she gets to do some important stuff in this movie. Also, it looks like the only time she needs rescuing is that sequence with the escape pod. Can anyone who has seen the movie tell me how many times she gets rescued?
