I feel a sort of double standard here...most people here would revolt at the idea of making Superman or Batman African American, but it's fine to make the villain black? Why not the hero then?

I think most people would revolt at a black Lex Luthor.

I, however, would not.

And I'd be open to seeing a Black Superman. Idris Elba, perhaps?

It's nothing to do with who is the hero or the villain, but how important their cultural background is. In this way, Flash or Robin could easily be played by black actors; The Penguin could not. See sig, also.

I was thinking Elba for Luthor. He can do charming and easily pull of intimidating. I'm not familiar with Luthor's background though...

I'd literally die from joy if Damon played Luthor. I don't see it happening but a girl can dream.

Last I checked. I'm surprised you didn't know, always assumed you did.

I don't get involved in the "community" stuff much, and have a terrible memory anyway. I will make a mental note!

I'm not a big Community type either. I have mentioned it on the Man of Steel boards and others. Ha, I'm glad you now know so no harm, no foul.

I wouldn't mind if Luthor was black. I mean, he looked a little black in S:TAS anyway.

For me, I guess it's a bit of a double standard, but I prefer that the hero be whatever race he is in the comics. Secondary characters, including the villain, can have their races changed for the purposes of diversity. The only exception would be if a secondary character's canon ethnicity is somehow important to his or her's personality or backstory.

Fishburne's role was small but I thought he was a good Perry White and that character wasn't black in the comics. I don't see why I should mind if a black actor was cast as Lex. Whomever they choose I just hope that they are a good actor.

Obviously I'm not saying all black people are dirt poor or anything, but Bruce Wayne's old money background just seems very white to me. And the character is so iconic that it would just seem like, why bother?

For me, it doesn't matter unless it contradicts the character's actual background. So, Black Panther shouldn't be white. Casting a black actor as Electro doesn't matter and is welcome (Foxx rocks) because there's nothing to say why it shouldn't happen.

Bruce could be adopted...but like I said, I don't like seeing main characters get their race changed.

It's not just old money, it's old old money. Bruce is the closest thing you can have to an aristocrat in the American context. It's really quite important to his relationship of responsibility to Gotham that the Waynes were one of Gotham's founding families. That's partly where the "knight" symbolism comes from, and that stuff is quite culturally specific. But, by all means let's screen test Jaden Smith as Dick Grayson.

You would have to change Wayne's background quite a bit to make him black.

Dicaprio looks more fit for a Joker role than Lex to me. However he is a good actor, and it all depends on how the character is written.

Talking races... I could have liked Ken Watanabe as luthor, but alas, he became Faux-Ra.

Yep he is a good actor and fit the role. Nobody but purist geeks cared that Perry was black.
