Exactly. He was to The Avengers what Nero was to Star Trek.

That was also done poorly. He was the reason they became a team, because he was a threat (at least Fury thought so) that needed multiple heroes to bring down.

Yet both Thor and Hulk easily defeated him individually within moments of their fights starting this nullifying the need for a team to come together.

You might say what about the Chitauri, well they didn't know abut that until after they all came together.

The threat Loki posed was not a physical one. His schemes area what necessitated the team. Loki has never been a physical threat.

Right. In fact, if you think about it, he almost succeeds. The only thing that he didn't take into account was the final assembling of the team. Up to that point, he would have ruled with the Chitauris.

Heh, Black Widow single-handedly outsmarted Loki in 5 minutes.

And what happened about five minutes after that scene? Oh yeah, his men blew up half the helicarrier.

I don't think Battleship is that bad.

I feel like there's a tendency of calling a movie "horrible" or a "disaster" when, actually, you just didn't like it. I can say I didn't like a film (like...let's say, John Carter), but I wouldn't even call it 'bad', not even close. Some people just go way too far and can't discern between a truly bad movie, and a movie they just didn't like it, for whatever personal reason.

So those people make HIM a physical threat.

But quite a lousy manipulator he is. Not only Black Widow outsmarted him easily, but unless he's unaware he's not a physical threat himself (as you say), he was extremely stupid for not using one of his fake images of himself when Hulk was about to beat him.

The movie had a lot of subversive humor like that, nothing more.

Because he's confident and full of ego. And he underestimated the Avengers.

Oh yes. A perfectly worthy villain turned into a joke for the sake of some laughs. Brilliant.

Yes, how dare he be an actual character with flaws rather than a walking omnipotent plot device like Nolan's joker.

Joker had flaws; he thought the ferris people were going to destroy each other, and in the end he was jailed.

But he was not stupid either.

And neither was Loki, he was arrogant. Thor went through pretty much the same character arc in his movie. Loki underestimated his enemies and got burned. It doesn't make an idiot or any less valid of a character, and that's what they did, they treated him like a character not just a villain.
