This is a superhero movie for the ages.

Not only is it a fresh take on 75 year old icon, but it wholly satisfies as a film on its own merits. The story is a well crafted tale, brilliantly realised on screen. It is wholly cohesive and emotional at its core, never forgetting the expectations to which it needs to live up.

This is after all SUPERMAN!

Having said that, the script completely pays off everything it sets up. It has absolutely no fat on it at all. Every scene and sequence is completely germane to the plot. The characters are well fleshed out and the conflict is borne out of their characterisations rather than a tacked on 'third act'. Every decision (some quite admirable in their boldness) that pushes the boundaries of established 'canon' stays true to the core of the characters. It never once feels like something created out of wholly new cloth masquerading as a Superman story.

So when Kal-El is faced with no choice but to make a decision that goes against his generally established mythos, he does the needful. And pays a heavy cost in doing so.

I can’t see how anyone could think this was sub-par in any way. It delivers in spades right from the script, to the direction, to the production design and visual effects, to the acting and the musical score.

In this viewer’s opinion, Man of Steel is an absolute triumph!

May it soar high.

EDIT: I forgot to post my rating! LOL

9/10

7.5/10

It was a great movie. Definitely a unique take on Superman that I really liked. It's my favorite Superman movie, without question.

Since it is a ratings thread, I have to put it up against the other movies. Not as good as any of the Nolan Bat films, IM1, or The Avengers.

Can't wait for the next Superman film!

After 1st viewing: 7/10

After 2nd viewing: 9/10

Not gonna bother comparing it with other superhero/CBMs. I think comparisons are pretty useless and exhausting.

Give this a solid 9.5/10 for my first viewing. Like everyone else has been saying, this was different from any comic book movie in many ways. Go in there with no preconceived notions...do yourself a favor.

What really surprised me more than anything was that it really was way more sci-fi than I had expected. It was a damn comic book in all aspects, just done in a way that grounded it. When you see young/old Clark going through his emotional turmoils, you feel for him. Clark goes through some things in this that make you forget he's Superman, he feels like some guy that has been dealt a rough hand. It wasn't until something fantastic was shown on screen that you remembered this is the Man Of Steel.

But, when he embraces his heritage in the film, it just grabs you and doesn't let go. Those action scenes were intense. Required repeat viewing.

My theatre had a collective gasp when

I have to stay that they got everything about the character and his struggles right. It all rung true to what an adolescent and young Clark Kent would go through. Throughout the whole film I felt all the way there with Clark on his journey towards becoming the Man of Steel. I'm similarly adopted, from a foreign war-torn country, into the good ol' USA and have traveled to try to find my place. Thus, a lot of it just stood out and made me emotional in all of the right ways.

The alien invasion route, I think, might be what is throwing reviewers off. Because there is nothing like this. I can't come up with even one example of a film that goes in the same areas. It just really felt unique and new and refreshing, I'd more than love for other superhero films to approach them in the same way because here - it truly felt like Superman could be real and living among us rather than just a comic book adaptation which was truly spectacular in and by itself. To avoid confusion later on, it still felt like a comic book but the comics I love. For TDKR it was an amazing adaptation of 'No Man's Land,' while here it's a brilliant adaptation of 'Birth Right' 'For All Seasons' and the classic fight with Doomsday.

Due to this, although we don't get to truly meet the Daily Planet staff we feel right at place with them and among them because in a sense we are in the city and world that Superman is protecting.

The kiss between Lois and Clark does seem somewhat forced, but doesn't really detract from it. By the end their connection is truly established in a later scene at the Planet. I was really upset by how much focus Gwen got in 'The Amazing Spider-Man,' I like the middle grounds such as in 'Iron Man' but really dug the amount of focus between Bruce and Rachel in the Batman films and I see this going the same way.

Jonathan Kent's death is handled well, by the way people on here put it - I was afraid that Clark just didn't go over there. But, Jonathan told Clark not to rescue him which was really tough on both ends and you can see how that affected Clark.

I'm really unsure about what people meant by not enough character and too much action. The plot and characters were central to the overall story and got the most focus. With a run time of two hours and twenty minutes, only forty minutes went to the fight. These really long fight scenes typically get to me because of how long they are, but here that didn't really happen. I was fully engaged from beginning to end. Plus, in the end with Superman mourning Zod's death - that's all Superman and how I suppose any guy with a good heart would react. He's not as cold as Batman, so an action like this to him would naturally mean a lot.

There were some biblical antidotes that got me worried at first. But, it fits and really hits home. I see people complaining about the priest too, but I loved the priest and think many here will as well. He even LOOKS (!) like the priest from 'Superman: For All Seasons' and I'm pretty sure they share some of the same lines as well.

As to the level and destruction of the fight. Yes, a lot of Metropolis falls apart and gets destroyed but it was a necessary evil. If Superman didn't stop Zod more people would have died. He had to stop Zod as fast as he could to save as many people as he could. Here too, we've seen this fight with Doomsday. It's the same fight and same level of destruction which was really a treat to see.

The cinematography too was astounding in the final fight. The CGI was in top shape and top form which added to this, but at times it felt like you were flying right alongside Superman and seeing what he sees. It wasn't entirely first person POV, but it felt remarkably like it could be at some times that's how much you were along for the ride.

The editing in the beginning was a little choppy, but after a while it starts to flow better and that will definitely flow better upon second and sequential viewings.

What I look for in superhero films is something else. I look for films that I can completely relate to, for out of this world action that you can only see on the pages of a comic book, and for a riveting overall experience. I want it to feel like a comic book, but bring all of the weight of the characters as well. Because of this my favorite MARVEL MCU films are Avengers, Iron Man 3, Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor followed closely by The Incredible Hulk. I want to feel something and these are the films that paid off in spades to me:

1. MAN OF STEEL
2. THE AVENGERS
3. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES
4. X-MEN: FIRST CLASS
5. SPIDER-MAN 2

I don't hate TDK, I just don't think it's as good as it could have been. To me that film felt like it was apologizing that it was a comic book film by changing genres. The only real highlight is the Joker and Harvey Dent once he becomes Two Face. To me, TDK is 8.5 - 9/10. Whereas TDKR, while some parts were too short, truly felt like a Batman comic that truly captured the essence of the character or at least what the character means to me.

As an adoptee/orphan superheroes have always been more than just about fights and amazing spectacle. They've been so much more personal and inspiring to me because I can relate to them. I lost my parents when I was sent away partly and probably for safety from a war-torn country (highest crime rate in the world). Because of that, I've always felt like an outsider and have always traveled trying to find my place in the world and where I fit in. I've sometimes become upset that I don't know my biological parents and have accidentally hurt my mom one time with that. And despite all of that, superheroes in the end rise above. While they're impacted by that loss, they don't let it completely define them and they find a way to use it to rise above. That's what's always been inspiring to me. TDKR heavily dealt with that theme of the orphaned hero and MOS took it a step further. I could completely relate to Clark and that's what I was looking for. And Martha's reaction when Clark told he found his parents? Pitch perfect. Although I haven't found them yet, whenever I bring them up -- you can see a hint of the way Martha looks in that scene. For a superhero movie with an orphaned hero to truly get everything right, and this one did and then some.

You will truly believe a man can fly. 10/10 (or 9.75/10 - as said the editing was awkward at first (but, that would only be there in the first viewing since you don't know when and how it will jump back and forth) and the kiss was a tad bit forced but the overall focus on the relationship was handled much better than most films and I can truly see this as evolving into a relationship similar to Bruce and Rachel. So, while not 100% perfect - it's the closest there is).
Awesome review mate even more psyched to see it and I thankfully don't have much longer to wait. Funny thing though I didn't wanna come to this wedding wanted to see Man of Steel so badly but the weddings been awesome so if its capped off by what I'm hoping will be the greatest CBM ever then all in all gonna be a great weekend.

Just came back from the movie theater... I give it an 8.5. Behind Avengers, The Dark Knight and on the same level as the 1st Iron-Man. The story is good and special effects great. one of the very few movies worth watching in 3D. My problem is that as a character Superman is usually boring. He has no flaws, but I liked the dilema they put him in at the end.

I'm going to say 7/10, the first half of the movie was great. Then it kind of turns into a big slug fest and loses some of what was making it special.

Barely anyone drank at mine. We didn't even buy that much wine and still had a case left at the end.

I suppose that's because it was an outdoor afternoon wedding. Plenty to do and look at without getting plastered.

Just saw it this afternoon with my wife, who by the way is not at all a fan of super hero movies. She absolutely loved it as did I. I can't for the life of me understand the negative critiques of this film. I was skeptical walking in after all the reviews, but it blew me away. Like a lot of you, I have been trolling this site for more than two years leading up to this release, and it was worth it. It is only now, that I am finally posting. Go see it if you haven't already...you'll love it!

Yeah, I'm going to see this a second time tomorrow and that will solidify my rating as well. It's either an 8.5 or a 9. For now, I'm going to go with:

9/10

I liked Man of Steel ALOT.
Only one thing bothered me it just seemed that there was an OVER abundance of skyscapers they were plowing through not to mention people in the streets standing there gawking with buildings falling instead of running.
9/10 for me too

I absolutely loved the film. I'm a little biased since Superman is my favorite superhero and since this is in my mind the best adaptation on the big screen of Superman ever.

Here is my ranking:
1) Man of Steel
2)The Dark Knight
3)The Avengers
4) Batman Begins
5) Ironman
6) The Amazing Spider-man
7) The Dark Knight Rises
8) Thor
9) Captain America
10) Ironman 3

Things I loved
-The Pacing:

Some have an issue with it, I personally liked how it was non-linear and somewhat reminiscent of Batman Begins. I hate the tedious, and at this point, cliche' & obligatory origin superhero film. There was a decent amount of action and visual spectacle to make what could've been a boring slog through Clark's history yet again into something more tangibly gripping.

-The Tone:

Once again, some took issue with something I didn't feel was anywhere near as bad as it was made out to be. Yes, it's certainly more serious and IMO that's the right approach, but there were also a lot of jokes that made the audience laugh out loud. Just a few off the top of my head were:

--How the bar bully tried to push Clark and afterwards, the mangled way he finds his truck
--How Superman breaks his cuffs and approaches the tough talking military suit during his "interrogation."
--The expression on Lois' face as the blogger spills the beans and the subsequent fast arrival of the government.
--Lois' d*** measuring opening scene, her "welcome to the Planet" line to Clark, and just about any time Christopher Meloni showed up with one of his quirky, weird expressions.
--Hell, even how Jor-el was guiding Lois through the ship, whether it was meant for laughs or not (and I think it was), I & the crowd found funny

I also think, at least for people that enjoy action, that the spectacle of the action is just as much a part of the fun as a corny one-liner.

--The Action:

And damn if it isn't the most over the top action I've ever seen in a superhero flick. But I'm also a product of the 80's macho films and have a certain affinity to them. I can certainly see how the transition from a pretty solid and somewhat grounded first half to the bombastic fight stuff can be jarring. It was jarring for me and I loved it. But when MoS goes there, it certainly goes there!

--The Cast:

I thought everyone was pretty good, Cavill & Costner being the obvious standouts. Henry is Superman for a new generation (hopefully) and Kevin brings that fatherly quality of his with ease, as he's done plenty of times before. Shannon I thought chewed the scenery a bit at points, but overall, I liked him and while Crowe's Jor-el might be in the film a bit more than some are bargaining for, I wasn't bothered by him and enjoyed the prologue quite a bit. Amy Adams was the first female love interest in quite awhile that didn't irritate the hell outta me. And while I didn't think she and Cavill had any particular chemistry, I like the feisty and involved Lois much more than the damsel in distress we always get in superhero flicks.

Things I didn't Like:

-Superman's involvement in such destruction:

Now granted, it's also the best part of the film for me, the wanton destruction and epic scale power on display. But it did bother me somewhat that Superman didn't try harder to really take the fight away from innocent bystanders at all. All types of s*** gets blown up and not once did Clark really stop to assess what was going on and try to either protect more people or move the fight to a more safe location.

-His "secret" identity:

I actually like that Lois knows who he is, it makes sense and alleviates one of those cheesy elements of their relationship. That being said, after he's all over the news and basically the whole world sees him, I struggle to believe just a pair of glasses can hide him at the Daily Planet from everyone but Lois. Even though it would've been an extreme change, I would've liked to see this version of Clark Kent actually have to wear a true disguise to blend in with the public. You can't have Lois figure out who he is with relative ease but then expect us to believe nobody else could.

-Superman Killing:

And this goes back somewhat to the utter destruction he leaves in his wake too. I know Zod kind of puts him in a bind, but we just saw almost 30 minutes of Superman kicking all sorts of ass, you can't tell me he couldn't simply lift Zod up and fly him away from the people he was trying to flame broil. Or how about use that ice breath of his that was strangely absent this movie, or use his own heat vision to crumble the floor around them so they would drop a level away from those people, or any number of things he could've done. It was the most out of character thing for him to do and it did bother the hell out of me.

That's really about it for me, I give this an 8/10 for now after just the first viewing and it could certainly move up. I put it around the same class of BB (which IMO is the weakest of the trilogy) & Spiderman 1 as a solid foundation to hopefully build upon. Extreme, almost comical action (which is exactly how it should be, a comic come to life) solid performances, enough nuance and story to not be one dimensional and a visual spectacle of massive proportions.

This

Exactly how I feel about it. I would have liked to see a flashback or 2 when sups gets knockout or something, like what happened to Thor after he died and odin came to him (just an example). Second half lacked the emotion that made the first half so special to me. Whats sad is this was an easy fix that was looked past.

So im at work and one of my employees just walked in saying his friend called him last night saying MOS is one of the sickest films he ever seen, said "the guy who plays Superman was incredible and is not allowed to play anyother roll but Superman!".

This just made my day, great word of mouth already!

7/10

1. The Dark Knight
2. Batman Begins
3. The Avengers
4. Superman
5. Iron Man 3
6. Spider-Man 2
7. Iron Man
8. Thor
9. X2: X-Men United
10. The Dark Knight Rises
11. Man of Steel

The pace was way too jolted, David Goyer wasn't able to build the entire scope of the film with forward momentum. Some of the dialogue is embarrassing, and takes away from many scenes. There is way too much "microwave emitter" plot junk in this and not enough real human drama. It's an enjoyable film that could have been much more.

After just seeing it a second time, I bump it up to a 9.5/10 I absolutely loved this movie and I really don't understand the hate that some fans are giving it.

Glad to see a lot of fans are enjoying the film.
