I could see Pierce as a character trying to restore the Red skull, like they believe he used the tesseract to travel somewhere else and perhaps he's using the situation to find out confidential info about the tesseract etc for his own info?

I dunno. I love all the shady, spy, double agent world of SHIELD though, I'm really excited that they're exploring it in the Cap movie.

When I rewatched Avengers recently, I noted the one scene where Cap first boards the Hellicarrier and Maria Hill kinda checks him out as he walks past her and I just thought "One day, lady... One day you're going to really piss him off and he's going to leap outta that window and hop on a jet" :P

So the idea of Cap being a fugitive or on the run in this film has me very keen :P
I'm 101% sure Pierce isn't Red Skull. As I said before when it was being discussed, the timeline of the Cosmic Cube just doesn't jibe. After the Tesseract whisked Schmidt away to Otherwhere/Otherwhen, it dropped to the bottom of the sea, where it remained for a few months until Howard Stark found it. It's been in SSR/SHIELD custody ever since, until the end of the Avengers movie, at which point it was taken back to Asgard. So the only places Skully could've "come back" would've been in the depths of the North Atlantic, in the middle of SHIELD HQ, or in the middle of Valhalla. None of those scenarios, obviously, gives Skully the time or chance to suddenly go all sneaky and infiltrate the highest levels of SHIELD administration. (Not that the megalomaniacal Skull would have the patience for a long-term mole assignment, anyway.)

Yeah but there's still more to Pierce than you're giving credit.

That's what it looks like. Sitwell and Stern both obviously hide the fact that they're HYDRA and most likely influence things secretly that way. I'm guessing the same for Pierce. I wouldn't be surprised if the entire Security Council is HYDRA.

I think it's safe to say it's both. I can understand why that would be too.

I wouldn't mind it, cuz it would kinda go with the whole lukin/dell rusk thing in the comics

but i'd rather he turned out to be Zemo, or baron von strucker or one of them

It's not that I don't want Redford as Skull (well...kinda, it is) but I think it's too early to bring Skull back. Let some of the other villains in Cap's rouges gallery have a turn.

I guess I am to me, it fits the theme of things coming back from his past (Bucky, and on the flip side, Peggy), would be a HUGE revelation to the audience (the Head of SHIELD is actually the Red Skull, a Nazi who nearly destroyed the world in the 40's?) and, think of it this way:

Robert. ****ing. Redford. As. The. Red. Skull.

Well... Who else could he really be? IMO, it's a 50/50 to me between Lukin and Skull - and in the Winter Soldier arc Lukin is the Skull anyway. He could be Baron Zemo, but that wouldn't really 'wow' the audience as much as the return of the Red Skull would. The only other option is he's just an antagonistic ******* boss.

Star Trek Into Darkness and TDKR also had very obvious villain twists (IM3 is one of the few films ever to have pulled off a successful twist).

Yeah but think of it this way... Robert ****ing Redford as anybody. Also, I would want Hugo Weaving again when the mask was off... It would be pointless to recast him and it would be ridiculous to switch actors without his 'fake' mask.

edit: I'm leaning more towards Strucker.

Not really. Maybe to us here, and that's only because he let it slip that he's a villain and we know HYDRA is in the film. To 99.99999% of the rest of movie going population, and even the internet at large, him being Red Skull would be pretty big shock.

Obvious to fans and a corny and potentially forced twist to the non-fans. What, it's Red Skull in a Robert Redford mask? It was him ALL ALONG! That doesn't seem totally cliched?

Nevermind the fact that Skull got sent into space. Unless the skull was magically transformed into a freakin shape shifting alien, who is now back on earth trying to take over hydra, I don't even see how him being the red skull is a possibility

I think it makes more sense that Redford is just the link to Hydra which in turn can be a link to a possible facilitation of Skulls return in the 3rd Cap film.

He was sent THROUGH space to a far away location. That's close enough.

Who says Red Skull's original body is intact? he could be possessing/inhabiting Redford's body like he did Lukin's in the comics. Maybe his conciosness was sucked into the cube somehow and got out during the intervening time when Shield was experimenting with it. I mean I'd like Weaving back too but it doesn't seem likely and if they still want to use Skull there's plenty of ways to explain the recast.

I'd rather they keep the skull out of this one. Maybe hint at his possible return at the end and give us a Baron and Skull team up for Cap 3

Whoever "Pierce" is, he's obviously had to have a long, long time to infiltrate SHIELD. He's at the top levels of SHIELD. He's close to retirement age (hell, if "Pierce" was *actually* Robert Redford's age, he'd already be long past retirement and drawing a pension). You don't get to that spot unless you've put in DECADES inside SHIELD.

Unless you're assuming that Pierce was a legitimate "innocent" good guy all along, and has only recently been "turned" or mind****ed or possessed or Skrulled or whatever by a bad guy.

That doesn't leave any room for a Red Skull scenario. If/when Skully debuts in the modern MCU, he's damn sure gonna let Cap, SSR/SHIELD, America and the world know that he's back in town. He's not gonna go skulking around in some innocuous disguise.
