Default Smallville similarities and Nods in MOS

I'm a big fan of the show Smallville and while watching Man of Steel, I couldn't help but notice the similarities between the 2. Some of these include shared cast members like Amy Adams, albeit in different roles.

SPOILER ALERT

One BIG one that sticks out is Zod's motives and how he and the kryptonians with him are dispatched.

Zod's plans in both involved turning earth in Krypton using a from of sacred Kryptonian technology. In Smallville, it was the Book of Rao, the Kryptonian equivalent of the Bible, and his plan was using it to turn the Yellow sun, red and, in turn, giving the him and the other Kandorians powers (which had been taken way by Jor-El). In MOS, it was the Codex and it would be used to repopulate Earth after the World Engine terraformed it into a Krypton-like environment.

The way Zod and his crew are dealt with is similar in that both are sucked into a Black Hole created by Clark. However, in Smallville the black hole just sent them to a new planet, while in MOS the black hole sent them to the Phantom Zone.

There are many more similarities between the two and nods that I haven't named. Feel free to post if you noticed them.

The actor who played Emil Hamilton in Smallville (Alessandro Juliani) was also in the film.

I know there we're a bunch of Donner nods. The rude trucker scene was almost a recreation of that same scene in Superman 2 but do people really believe there we're any intentional nods to smallville?

I'm not sure about that one? Maybe more coincidences.

Yeah, I can't see Nolan or Snyder having seen a single episode of Smallville. Maybe Goyer.

Zod was a lot more sympathetic at points, but I don't know if SMALLVILLE did that first or if they copied that off the comics. But, he definitely wasn't the cold Zod from STM II.

Nah that's just Superman 101 and is certainly not unique to Smallville. Smallville did but it was something Superman comics do.

Younger Clark looked very "Welling-esque"

Someone laid out the similarities pretty well in the SV forum. I won't steal their thunder but one of them was the Smallville High varsity jackets which look like they came right off the set.

I was surprised at the Smallville alumni in the film. Old Emil Hamilton working for the new one. Clever.

In a way, this movie was a bigger, better version of Smallville with Clark getting the suit and flying throughout!!!

That's because this film was a Superman film instead of a show that was only ever supposed to be Clark before he became Superman. Also, I'd like to note that Clark on Smallville defeated Zod three times before he became Superman at the age of 24, which is a good nine years before this Clark became Superman. Welling's Clark mastered flight and donned his suit six years after high school whereas Cavill's Clark mastered flight and donned his suit 15 years after high school. You're comparing apples and oranges.

Tornado scene, Enveloped in flames scene, and the destroyed tractor trailer scene all reminded me of Smallville.

Their were a lot of "Smallville" nods

1. Jor-El and Zod once friends turned Enemies
2. Zod being more of sympathetic character
3. Clark powers manifesting in school
4. Clark saving the bus that falls of a bridge in "smallville" mirror's Clark saving Lex
5. Jonathan saving clark his ship
6. The Tornado scene
7. Lois finding out about Kal-El
8. Kal-El and Lois relationship
9. ground launch for Flight take off similar to Kal-El's in season 4 Crusade and Clark's in season 10 finale
10. Zod's quest to reshape earth into a new Krypton
11.Superman vs. zod (just not as super powered)more to follow....

They were sent to the Phantom Zone as well, weren't they? In one of the very last episodes of the series I believe, Clark is sent to the PZ where he meets up with Kara(Brainiac having sent her there earlier) and Clark meets up with Zod.

Yah, I'm sorry too. I caught a few episodes here and there after season four, but I was just done watching it religiously when season four ended...it just didn't feel the same anymore.

But, also...David Paetkau was one of the soldiers working at the Northern Command station and he appeared in two episodes of Smallville, back in the very first season as a football player and then again later in the series as Dan Turpin.

Clark doesn't meet up with Kara in "Dominion" (one of the last few episodes of the series). He did find her there in Season 8's "Bloodline" after Brainiac sent her there at the end of Season 7.

General Zod's phantom was sent to the Phantom Zone in "Zod" (the first episode of Season 6). Later, Clark sent a clone of a younger Major Zod and hundreds of his Kryptonian soldiers to another universe using the Book of Rao in the Season 9 finale ("Salvation").

In Season 10's "Dominion", Zod formed an alliance with Darkseid. Clark foiled his plans by entering the Phantom Zone powerless and manipulating Zod. Before Clark defeated Zod, Clark learned Zod's soldiers in that other universe sent him to the Phantom Zone for murdering Faora and their unborn child. There, General Zod's phantom wraith merged with his cloned body to become a corporeal combination of both Zods. We last see General Zod condemned to the Phatom Zone with no escape.

There were alot of similarities & nods between some of the things Smallville did with General Zod & Superman in Man of Steel. More similarities between Smallville & Man of Steel in that perspective, than Man of Steel & Superman II.. and that's a good thing.

Ahh, I see....so damn confusing, haha, but it's nice that they merged the two Zods together.

Thanks for clearing that up

I mentioned this over in the Smallville section of the forum, but I don't know if this would count as a nod to Smallville or not, but it was something that I thought was really interesting. In the movie, Clark used the name "Joe" as he went around various places and worked jobs. In Smallville, when we see a young Jor-El on Earth, he also goes by the name of "Joe". I say they're similar because in the movie, Clark was sort of a drifter, and in Smallville, Jor-El was known as The Drifter.
