Okay, having rewatched some clips from the trilogy, I will admit that "whiny and overemotional" was the wrong choice of words and that Bale does have a charm to him as Bruce Wayne. Still, I distinctly remember watching them the first time, seeing Bale trying to be intimidating or express anguish ("Where are they?", "Do I look like a cop?", a lot of the scenes where he has to yell), and thinking "He sounds so pathetic". That may have been what they were going for in some places, but it's not something I want to think about when one of the most badass characters in comics is on screen. I don't think Bale is a bad actor (though perhaps not the cinematic godsend everyone seems to think he is), but between this and Terminator Salvation, I'm beginning to think he wasn't meant to be an action hero. Nevertheless, it was a passable performance and I meant no ill will toward the guy.

Getting back on topic, I'm still trying to think of a realistic casting choice, but it recently occurred to me that, were it possible to cast a black Batman, Will Smith would be a pretty cool choice to play him.

Experience in both action and drama, proven serious acting chops, but also probably pretty familiar with being a billionaire media-friendly celebrity, as Bruce often pretends to be, and a likability and charm underneath all of it. A little old, but youthful enough to pass for mid-30s.

Never gonna happen, but I would totally see that movie.

Really glad Luke Evans is in this poll. Would love to see his take on Batman.

He is at least a proper actor, though. I find him much more palatable than some suggestions which have been made because the actor/model has big muscles or a "gruff" voice or whatever.

Whoever plays the part will need to alter their voice anyway, as they will be portraying three different personas.

Still don't want Gosling. I like him as an actor, but I would much prefer to see him as Flash or something

And you know why I want Bentley? I'll tell you why...

I fully believe that Michael Keaton gave by far the best live action performance of Batman/Bruce Wayne ever. Sure, he was never characterized as a glossy and dimwitted playboy, but that visage is hardly the difficult part of playing Bruce Wayne.

The difficult part of being Bruce Wayne is humanizing him. Being able to toe the line between damaged youth and borderline psychotic, and doing both while remaining likeable and relatable. It's a fine line between troubled, and whiny, and an even finer line between rationally vengeful and downright scary.

Somehow Keaton was able to put forth a performance that hit on all points perfectly and seemingly effortlessly. His Bruce Wayne was all at once a troubled killer and an innocent, frightened child, and he was able to play it in a way that made the audience understand and feel a kinship to him, even if we are neither troubled or childish.

The most similar performance I've ever seen to Keaton's was Bentley's in American Beauty. He, like Keaton, was somehow able to capture all of the various aspects of his character's psychosis while remaining somehow relatable and endearing.

It's that element, and that ability that needs to be brought back to Batman. It's one, that I'd argue, has been missing since Keaton left the role.

I was saying Bentley last summer. But we all agreed that he would be a little too menacing looking.

You people need to get over looks.

Looks aren't the important thing. The important thing is their acting presence and skill.

Something about Gosling is just too "hipster" for me. I don't know, can't put my finger on it. I know he's a talented actor but something about him playing Batman just rubs me the wrong way. Plus I think he's too famous now too. I'd rather see an up and comer.

Agreed.

I think Gosling would be suited for and bring something good to the table as Flash.

...how does Gosling work for Flash at all outside of him having blonde hair?

The Flash - either Barry Allen or Wally West - are more jovial and lighthearted than anything. Whereas Gosling's best performances have stemmed from him brooding in the vein of Marlon Brando.

That's the worst thing they could do; change a character's core merely to appeal to a passing fad.

Newbie here, i've read through the whole 5 part casting thread, the problem is that none of the actors really jump out at me that much, apart from Gosling. I've voted for the 4 best options on the list.

Joe Manganiello - Not the best actor, but he's the sterotypical 80's-onward comic book Batman. He's imposing, he's bulky, he looks like he could win many a fight. Not sure on his Bruce Wayne though. Is he a good enough actor to play the Bruce role.

Ryan Gosling - The best actor on the list, but the least likely to do it. Not sure what he would look like in the suit, but nobody thought Keaton would pull off Batman, and he proved everyone wrong. He's easily a talented enough actor to play Bruce, and he's shown with "Drive" that he can play a tough guy too. It's just how effective he is in the suit that would be the question.

Anson Mount - He looks mean, he plays mean, he can do the whole revenge angle. He's a decent enough actor to play Bruce.

Jon Hamm - he is basically Bruce Wayne, without even trying. But he would probably be as bad as Clooney when it comes to being Batman (i had no issue with Clooney's Wayne). So to avert another disaster, if they cast Hamm, he needs to do a Batman Beyond style film, in which he can play his natural Bruce Wayne, and mentor another actor as Terry.

Forgot to mention, my ideal casting (if he were available) would be Michael Fassbender, but he's busy with X-Men, so it won't happen.

What they could do, is do a Dark Knight Returns movie, and cast someone much older as Batman, or just play it safe and bring back Michael Keaton. It would be unusual, but it might work?

Yeah, if I had to pick someone it'd be Caviezel but he's too old. Honestly I just feel like saying "the heck with it, bring in a newcomer who screentests well."

Wait to totally simplify the hell out of what I said. Apparently, noting some flaws in Bale's performance and saying Will Smith would be a cool Batman in an alternate universe equates to "Bale sucks, Will Smith for Batman!"

EDIT: I was responding to hafizbat. Sorry, forgot to update the page.
