Default Disney Buys Rights to Marvel Movies From Viacomís Paramount

Walt Disney Co. (DIS), the owner of Marvel Entertainment, acquired the rights to four Marvel superhero movies held by Viacom Inc. (VIAB)ís Paramount Pictures, the studio that released the films from 2008 to 2011.

The agreement covers the first two ďIron ManĒ movies, ďThorĒ and ďCaptain America: The First Avenger,Ē according to a statement today from Burbank, California-based Disney and Los Angeles-based Paramount. Terms weren't given.

I was very confused at the title of your thread and had to click the article to make sure this wasn't a really old post that the board spit back up.

Disney just wants all avenues of distribution of the four Marvel films, that's all. I'm pretty sure the Paramount logos from those films will stay intact.

I'm surprised Disney hasn't acquired the home vid rights to TIH yet from Universal.

they'll be able to release them at 4k in the future then. not sure if 4k really makes a difference for 32mm film tho. most cinemas are 2k.

there's also that if they make these for decades like the comics then the originals will probably get reproduced more than anything just like with the comics. altho eventually it'll all be over the internet and they already had those rights, which is why marvel studios films are on netflix now.

anyway it gives them less to worry about going into the future, but for TIH. maybe they secured that already but it just didn't make the news.

Disney wants to make sure they are all over these films going forward. Makes sense for future box sets, rereleases, etc. They will get TIH too don't worry, lol.

This just cements my belief that Disney is going to try and all acquire the rights to the films of the properties that they have in their possession. I won't be surprised to see when Disney buys the remaining Muppets films from Sony, the Incredible Hulk from Universal, and Star Wars from Fox.

Disney does have a tendency to change the logos on their films. Nightmare Before Christmas was originally a part of Disney's Touchstone label and has since switched over to the Disney label. I wouldn't be surprised if Disney decided to insert their own label or just simply get rid of the Paramount label and just kept the Marvel label (the way they have with the Thor 2 trailer).

I agree that they almost certainly will slap the Disney AND Marvel label on these films from this point forward. FYI though the reason why there is no Paramount logo on Thor 2 is because the deal with Paramount is over starting with that film. The deal(which was later somewhat revised) went through IM3. The revision saw the last two films distributed by Disney but credit needed to be given to Paramount as well. With Thor 2 that is no longer the case.

However Disney will probably erase all traces of Paramount and Universal's role in the MCU entirely.

I wonder whatever happened to those rights issues of the 80's Marvel cartoons of Hulk and Spider-Man?

Disney bought those years ago when they acquired FOX Kids. One thing I wish Disney also buys is all those Lionsgate animated projects.

Me too. When I read this on CBM.com, I was shocked that it didn't even mention Disney getting the rights to TIH as well. Would that mean Universal would totally be down with working on another Hulk film?

universal don't have the rights to work on a hulk film. they still have the rights to distribute the ones that they worked on as far as we know tho.

Universal only had the distribution rights to the Incredible Hulk, Disney has full control over the character now.

Is that a bad thing?

the 1960s - 90s cartoons all need DVD set releases! there's no excuse at this point. Gen X and Gen Y have more money to spend now..

It's usually for their in-house films. Besides, Paramount is still getting a small fee from those four films, so Disney will keep the logos on them. Just like they did with The Avengers and Iron Man 3.

And I don't really see Disney using their logo for the post-Paramount MCU films, as well as Lucasfilm's Episode VII. The teaser posters for both Thor 2 and Captain America 2 indicate Disney's still keeping their logo off the films.
