Default Are you Happy with How Strong Superman and others are?

I was watching an interview with Zach Snyder where he said if the Superman in his movie was hit with a cruise missile it would be like him getting hit by a linebacker, and hes not sure if Superman could survive a nuclear bomb blast.

In the movie Faora is hit by a missle and then a plane crashes on top of her and shes knocked out.

Gunfire from a jet knocks the characters down

Is that too weak for you or too strong?

I think his speed is incredible. He breaks the sound barrier quite easily, and went halfway around the planet very quickly, so Im guessing his top speed is mach 50 or some crazy number

His strength in the film seemed perfect to me, he was actually stronger than I had anticipated.

Yeah I actually really LIKED the fact that the missiles and gunfire from the military were able to knock the Kryptonians around a bit. I mean we're not talking about little pop guns here; those planes were firing some really heavy-duty artillery, and it should at least have SOME kind of impact (even if it doesn't outright kill them).

To weak for me, kryptonians should not be bothered by weapons from earth.

He's fine to me. He just needs to be strong enough to do the stuff he did in MOS. A little weakness is just fine to me. Make him too strong and he becomes boring.

I'd say Kryptonians should be mostly invulnerable to any real-life Earth weapons, but not necessarily to the kind of sci-fi weapons Lex Luthor might invent.

To be fair, she wasn't mangled by the weapons (showing invulnerability), only the force of the denotation knocked her out...which I guess shows some semblance of realism.

I agree with this, it could have been a sub story introduced in a sequel about the military realising their weapons are ill prepared to face any alien invasion out there so they go to Lex.

I saw that interview with Zack Snyder too and I actually loved it. Part of what makes Superman inaccessible for some is they just view him as too-powerful, they seem him as basically omnipotent (which he is obviously not). So while I absolutely HATE kryptonite, I think it's a cheap gimmick way to bring Superman to within "accessible" power-levels, I generally am in favor of depowering Superman just a bit instead.

I loved the scene that showed those Little Bird helicopter miniguns blazing and hitting Superman square in the forehead and his head kind of whiplashing back. That's in contrast to the ridiculously powerful Superman Returns version where bullets literally bounce off his eyes (as cool as that scene was to watch).

So yes, I like that Superman could be knocks down (maybe even a bit shaken-up) by a direct cruise missile strike. Maybe he could be knocked unconscious by a direct rail-gun (like the rail gun in Transformers 2) strike. And yes, I've always thought that a director nuclear blast should be able to kill all of the Justice League members. It kind of gives them context so we can understand their power, and it makes it so that writers are not just in a continual arms race to prove how powerful different characters are in their universe. It's fun to speculate for a minute, but those make for the weakest storylines and are pretty childish.

I'm also glad MoS showed that for Superman to really go ridiculously fast he has to have a more powerful lift-off to reach those speeds. Like he has to tell Lois is step back in order to get the lift off needed to reach the stratosphere so he can then reach the other side of the world asap. In comparison when he's surrounded by all those soldiers at the end of the battle-of-smallville he just lifts off because he doesn't need to gather those same necessary speeds to reach his Smallville home quickly. I just hope this trilogy makes Superman's power levels more consistent throughout. Like I don't want to see him punching bads guys into Mars or something ridiculous like that.

Finally, one of the reasons I actually liked the neck-snapping is because that basically killed the "debate" of whether Superman (and other Kryptonians) are invulnerable. I wish invulnerability was completely written out of most (if not all) comic characters. It's not necessarily the strength that makes these characters unrelated, but the fact that they "can't be hurt." If that's the case then Superman ever engaging in a fight with another invulnerable character would be entirely stupid. At least with Superman being strong enough to snap Zods neck (as opposed to Zod flying through builds and concrete doing it) it showed that Superman is stronger than all these human-made materials, but that kryptonians are not immune to everything. It just takes someone of equal physical strength to kill them.

So basically, down with invulnerability + making him a bit less powerful = more relatable and more possibilities to write strong stories.

Sorry this ended up being so long, this just sort of spewed out.

FAORA WAS KNOCKED OUT BECAUSE HIS SENSES WERE SHAKING HERE.. If she controled that.. the missile would haven't done nothing to her...

i thought it was obvious. yet some didn't get it.

and the Krpytonian's physical blows are more powerful and hurtful than hitting by concrete / bullets and steel bar. Superman was down momentarily during the Smallville fights.

The part I liked when he snapped the handcuffs so nonchalantly. He did that like how we would tear a of sheet of paper in half. Those small no big deal examples of his strength are sometimes better then the picking up of a school bus because its hard to
imagine doing something like that. If you you every been in handcuffs you know how hard it would be to snap them in half.

Agreed. Little things like that can go a long way.

well, look at it this way. During the entire movie, after all Superman went through, he did not have a scratch on his body or a tear on his suit

Superman was stronger than the other Kryptonians anyways, I'd keep it the way it is to avoid having him be overpowered.

After seeing the scene again, I think the missile completely destroyed her malfunctioning helmet (that Superman damaged) so she was completely exposed and blacked out. The shock of having an A10 fall on top of her right after the fact might have helped as well

Just right. The powers and their levels really delivered. He's tough but can be pushed around by conventional albeit high-powered weaponry. Like how the heat vision at higher intensity takes a toll.

I think they showed a perfect power level in the movie while still leaving the door open to amp it up if the story requires it. I loved the way the heat vision kind of winds them a little bit. i could imagine a scene where Superman has to do an incredibly over the top feat of strength and then collapses. In my imagination it is way cooler than the krytonite island coma from SR more in line with the final punch with Doomsday.

If they are going with the concept that the more he's on Earth and absorbing yellow solar energy, the more powerful he becomes, then I can see that happening. I'm expecting him to manifest his super breath in the sequel.

I like it because its a balance of his eras, which we did see such as the leaping from the Golden Age before he flies. I also like it because it gives him limits, and that if he were to be hit with a massive force, it would be enough to hurt him. When you increase the amount of that, it could kill him.

I feel the power level was just right for the most part. I did wonder why it was so strenuous for him to hold up that portion of the oil rig. I also enjoyed his head snapping back from the bullet, it didn't damage him but it caused a slight physical reaction. In relation to bullets when the plane was shooting at them he dodged them rather than get hit.
IDK I liked seeing his head snap back but I also like the image of Supes getting shot in the chest and the bullets being destroyed or bouncing off.
