So with that in mind we need somebody at least 20yrs older than Bruce, who looks like he could've served in the army in his younger years. I like the idea of Jeremy Irons - could work, but how about Charles Dance? Looks good with the Alfred muzzie (courtesy of David Niven)...

I'm kind of digging this suggestion. I didn't much care for Earth-one either but I think I'm in love with the interpretation of Alfred as a grizzled ex-special forces soldier who masquerades as a butler. It's an interesting twist to the Bruce and Alfred relationship. Charles Dance has a really intimidating air to him that feels appropriate...but I feel as though I've only ever seen him playing villains. I'm sure he's got more range than that, but has he ever played something more endearing as a point of reference?

This would be consistent with the re-imagined character as portrayed in "Beware the Batman". Dalton has experience playing an MI-6 agent (for crying out loud, he was James Bond) so it would be a perfect fit playing playing Bruce Wayne's bodyguard/butler.
HELL YEAH!

Alan Rickman is still my #1 choice, but Dalton has been my #2 so i would be happy for this casting news

Malcolm McDowell- not good to have an Alfred who looks more disturbed than Batman

Alan Rickman- would have a hard time appearing not to find the entire concept ridiculous

John Cleese- he could be wonderful, but the whole 'Q' thing in Bond might make it feel like repeating itself

Terence Stamp- see 'Malcolm McDowell'

Timothy Dalton- could I believe that this guy kind of gave up his own life to raise Bruce Wayne? ummmm, nope

Sean Connery- could be very cool as an EarthOne/BewareTheBatman Alfred, but would he ever do it?

John Hurt- the perfect Alfred Pennyworth in every way

I'm starting to lean towards John Hurt. He has the gentle Gough vibe to him, which I like.

I love John Hurt, one of my favourite actors, but I don't think he's right for Alfred - plus looking down the line of (hopefully) more films in the franchise... I think Hurt's age goes against him!

I think he can work as Alfred. Especially a gentle fatherly one. But I'm unsure if he could provide a believable sense of sarcasm in his lines to Bruce - if Alfred has any of course.

His age is bit of problem. But bare in mind, Caine was 70 when he was cast as Alfred.

However, there might be more than 3 Batman films, so Hurt would be older than Caine's end at 79...which could be bit of a mess!

Who says Alfred lives through the series? Batman is later in his career - it may actually be an interesting storyline (despite B&R obviously ****ing it up).

Yes Bruce wouldn't say "Alfred?" after he fires him.... Might as well killed him off in TDKR.

Timothy Dalton would be fine. McDowell...it could be a stretch. His career has been built upon maniacs, of every sort of variety, but the final act of Halloween II's Directors' Cut shows he play a normal, caring person with ease.

If we are going for a new take on Alfred all they have to do is givd us a visually comic book accurate Alfred. Hasn't really ever been done on film.
