Advertising and the tone of the film will really decide that imo. If this film looks dark and depressing it's not gonna grab the family crowd and that's honestly where alot of the high grossers get their money. With Batman aside it's tough for darker films. It's gonna have to look appealing to that demo if it wants to get near the 1 billion category crew.

True but advertising has always been TC Fox's strong suit. If they do it well I can see it happening rather easily.

In my opinion, it will take X-Men a couple of BIG films for a X-Men movie to hit the $1 billion mark.

DOFP is gonna earn a lot compare to the last three films because its featuring the long-awaited return of the OT cast and we know in every X-Men film that the OT cast appeared together, they always outgrossed the previously released films and I'm confident it will be the same case here. There's also the FC cast, the big robots, new characters, time-travel, the good word of mouth from FC/TW and Bryan Singer as the director again as big selling points to DoFP.

But seriously, 1 X-Men film is not gonna get $1 billion right away especially considering the fact that the last three X-Men films didn't even hit the 400 million mark. The Wolverine might hit the 400 million mark but not yet.

I think if FOX played their cards right, DOFP could get 500 to 700 million worldwide, then the next film after that (which should feature the OT cast) could get 600 to 800 million worldwide, then the 9th film finally hitting the 1 billion mark. The franchise should get the momentum back first. They should really look at the success of the Fast/Furious franchise. They bought back the original cast for the 4th film which had more success than the spin-off movie, after that they brought them back again in the 5th film which outgrossed all the previously released FF films and this year, they brought them back again for the 6th film. And now that 6th FF film is currently the 2nd top grossing film of 2013. Thats why I'm not really liking the idea of the X-Men film franchise branching out to spin-offs again. Sure FOX could expand the X-Men universe (as if they didn't in the past) by doing a X-Force film, a Fc3 film and a Deadpool film, but its not gonna help the film franchise to earn 700 million to 1 billion per film.

And James Cameron directing a X-Men movie would have been huge! But I'm happy with what we've got right now.
Once we get some of the release dates back for some markets we're pretty sure that this looks like it could be on of the highest grossing films of all time in South America and should continue the films dominance internationally (Coming out straight after the World Cup). I feel bad for the movies that come out after it.

Yeah because the people who will watch World Cup and the people who won't watch it will not go out to watch movies.

World Cup starts June 1. DOFP will be released almost everywhere (just like The Wolverine) in May 21 to May 23.

If your theory is right about World Cup, then that will help DOFP to beat the numbers of June 2014 releases.

Avatar generated the longest queues I've ever seen at what was then my nearest IMAX cinema (and is now a digital giant screen, not IMAX). It was the biggest earner that cinema has ever had.

And when I saw Avengers at a screening for press and bloggers, it was like being at a sports game with all the cheering, clapping and leaping in the air (which does not normally happen at UK screenings).
That's fair enough, but was it obvious that these films would be massive event movies, say, eight months before their release? I guess what I meant was that these movies are only obviously "event" once they're out and making big business.

Well there's me I just don't think that this movie has a core of obsessive geeky fans like CBMs do.

What Avatar really managed to do though was pull in the female audience who normally would never see anything remotely sci-fi. My friend who shuns sci-fi like plague wanted to see it pretty much from the time she first saw the trailer and before she even knew that it was a 3D movie.

Also in many international markets the release dates of several movies are getting shifted. In many regions (including the UK). There are almost no films for DOFP to compete with in June apart from "all you need is kill" (which may end up repeating the success of WWZ). Looks like they're saving everything until the later half of the tournament (less games, and most countries would have been knocked out).

Looks like its gonna be a battle between Critical applause and how well marketed Xmen and "all you need is kill" are. WB have no other flagship summer movie this year and may go all out(godzilla doesnt count due to the whole Legendary situation). DOFP has to deliver, but either way the film will have legs so $500mil could very much happen if the US box office crosses $200-225 mil which could be a problem because in the US movies are coming out non stop

So you do exist! haha. For a movie to have 3 sequels I would think the fan base would have to be huge. Just don't hear people talking (or caring) about it in general. I know the money says otherwise, that's why I kinda trip out on it.

I keep wondering how it would have performed if Cameron was just story writer.

This completely. I would assume there would be a faction of adoring fans but it doesn't seem to. :/

If DOFP beats TASM2 I'm going to go to Sony Pictures and tell them "you failed".

Yes but if I think both films are great I'll obviously like TASM2 more as Spider-Man is my favourite.

I think both films have the potential to be the best in their franchises, so TASM2 beating SM2 and DOFP beating... Which is generally considered the best anyway?

If that poll was relaunched X2 would probably win because of the OT returning for DOFP. Like I said theres really no right answer. People have their preference and they were both widely liked. Fans will always claim their favorite is the best.
