I worry that with only 8 minutes of a digital Hulk in a $220 million Avengers movie, how much digital Thing can we expect in an FF movie of what is certainly going to be a much smaller budget. Fox could not afford decent Mr. Fantastic effects for the few times he needed them in either FF movie, yet we are to trust them to give us a good cgi Thing for what should be the bulk of this reboot. I would even be happy with an approach like WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE - in which practical characters were built and the faces animated when needed. Lots of practical options that combine both techniques with out going totally for the more expensive digital option.
I think a combo or practical, animatronics, and CGI would work best: Make a base suit for the actor to move about in and interact with the rest, but it's inhuman proportions (notably his extended ape like arms and huge hands) are controlled via animatronics, with it all polished off with CGI (I'd keep all CGI for distance action set-pieces)

I'd also approach the suit as it if was really solid rocky plates at work. No rubber simulation of a rocky appearance, which loses any convincing effect the moment he moves (rock doesn't flex and bend...), and make the exterior from solid plates that slide over and under each other (just like Ben's hide is meant to work). This is something an all rubber suit cannot acheive at all.

I'm basically thinking along the lines of how they did Iron-Man for many of his scenes: RDJ often wore partly armoured suits, and they CGI'd in the rest where natural looking movement wasn't viable if there was real armor there. IM's 'skin' is solid metal plates sliding over and under each other for mobility, and that's how the Thing's skin should work too (imo).

Anyways, the Thing should really carry a 'wow' factor with him when we see him. Have the audience left guessing how the hell they did it so well. rather than knowing immediately it is just a guy in rubber suit.

There are many good actors in the world but that doesn't mean they're a good fit for just any character. Anthony Hopkins is a wonderful actor but he'd make a lousy Spider-Man.

Admittedly, comicbook movie fans are spoiled. But put the blame where it lies, on Marvel, FOX, Warner Brothers and Sony who on numerous occasions have hired terrific actors that also bear a close resemblance to their comic book counterparts.

Even Ben Affleck arguably has two of the three key requirements:

1. He's a good actor.
2. He looks like Batman.
3. He just doesn't have the right personality.

Now we're getting 1 of the 3 requirements and some people are saying: "I like this choice. He's a good actor."

1 out of 3 may be better than 0 out of 3, but I still can't see why 1 out of 3 is anything to get excited about.

And by the way. Bad actors are pretty hard to find these days.

Nearly any working actor has some skills. They damn well better be considering good actors because there are plenty of them out there. Saying that someone is a good actor is pretty much meaningless. Any Oscar nominees on the list?

Personality has nothing to do with it. They are paid to be a different personality than their own. Casting directors only look at two things
1. Can the actor portray the character the way the script and the director want?
2. Does the actor have the look the director wants for the film?

I'm tired of Reed being perceived by producers and casting directors as some kind of adult version of Peter Parker. Reed should be like Carl Sagan if he had superpowers.

This is not one thing but a combination of many things. Personality, acting ability, stage presence, physicality and coordination, comedic timing, voice pitch, voice timbre, voice volume, chemistry with other actors etc. etc. etc. could ALL be considered.

As humans we judge and integrate many of these items very quickly without clicking them off a checklist, but saying that is one item is highly simplistic.

This couldn't be any further from the truth. There are plenty of terrible to mediocre actors out there that get work on a consistent basis.

Quote:

Just because someone isn't an Oscar nominee doesn't negate their ability as an actor. There have been plenty of Oscar nominees that have been in terrible movies and many non-Oscar nominees that have been in stellar movie roles.

What's your point?

My point is that the only thing that makes these actors anything other than mediocre is that you've said so. And you can't offer any objective evidence to the contrary.

Personality
Doesn't matter what your personality is if I am looking for someone to be Hannibal Lector
acting ability,
The only thing that matters
stage presence,
Nope not a factor
physicality,
also not a factor...actors can work out and put on/lose weight as needed
comedic timing,
not really a factor if there are no comedic moments
voice pitch,voice timbre, voice volume,
not a factor
height, weight, build, hair color,
again not a factor as all of these things can be manipulated. Tom Cruise is notoriously short and yet looks tall in all his films. Chris Pratt was cast as Star Lord in GOTG. Anyone who watches Parks and Rec. knows he is out of shape...yet he worked his but off to get into shape. Christopher Reeve was skinny when he was cast as Superman. Actors and actresses change their hair color all the time for a role.
Skin tone
Not as set in stone as you think. Skin color and race have been changed for character to fit the actor. Neo in the Matrix movies was written for Will Smith. The One was originally written as an action movie for Arnold not Jet Li.

As humans we judge and integrate many of these items very quickly without clicking them off a checklist, but sayint that is one item is highly simplistic.
Trust me I have done some casting and their are only two factors that are looked at.

The Spider-Man movies have been heavily influenced by the Ultimate Universe. The Avengers was basically The Ultimates and X-Men have had characters based on their ultimate counterparts.
