I've always loved Jack's Joker look and especially the perma-smile I don't think it would've worked any other way.

Supposedly Jack was going to have bright green hair like Romero and Nicholson convinced Burton to darken it, add some black, etc.

This is correct. Jack was concerned about lighting as he read a handful of 50's Batman comics, looking at Joker, and found that too light green hair would have been bad for the movie.

good call on that I agree the darker green hair works much better in fact I liked how they gave TAS Joker dark green hair with some light green highlights instead of bright green all over.

They also actually considered having him wear a green wig, which from what I heard looked ridiculously bad haha.

He did wear HAIR PLUGS and dyed his hair. They had a good green wig that he liked but he said ultimately it wasn't comfortable.

What I'm appreciating more and more is how they chose to unravel Batman's origin. Everyone and their mother nowadays wants to see the same origin formula that rips off STM, and this movie decides to do something different. It peels back layers of Bruce until you get to the climax, where you see the most pivotal part of his origin story.

Which coincides with Elfmann's theme at its most haunting. I love that sequence.

I disagree. You know next to nothing about Batman even at the end of the movie. You basically know that he travelled the world (well, it is implied) and that his parents were murdered. But there is no real psychological insight at all.

Heck, you do not even know if Batman was already a killer before he had learned that Napier killed his parents.

Also, for example, on one hand Bruce Wayne is such a mysterious figure that Vicki has to do research (she does not even what how he looks like!) to find about his parents but then they also try to present him as a public figure, hosting big events. Remember, there was also an (empty) chair for him at the Harvey Dent press conference. They basically had two ideas about Bruce Wayne and wanted to have their cake and eat it too. It just doesn't work.

The internet did not exist in B89. Those of us who remember those distant days will attest to the genuine possibility that the appearance or family history of a company chairman/owner would not be common knowledge. I would say that the empty chair motif rather newly and deliberately encapsulates the concept of Bruce as a man hidden in plain sight from the world.

The movie clearly wants to present Bruce Wayne as a public figure. But then also not.

It just doesn't work, no need to talk around this.

Since we disagree and I think you're being overly simplistic, I think there is every reason to discuss this.

I'm afraid that claiming to be correct and asserting that discussion should therefore cease is rather a feeble debating tactic.

I love this movie, I hold dear next to BB & TDK. Best three live action Batman films

BR, BF & TDKR were good. I'm not gonna say what the worst is.

The movie implies that Batman isn't a killer, with the first scene that he's in. "I'm not going to kill you. I want you to do me a favor, I want you to tell all your friends about me."

And there are plenty of "psychological insights". The discussion between Knox and Vicki helps explain things, along with the flashback in the cave when Bruce is going over his parents murders. Also, when Bruce is talking to Vicki about how Alfred is his only family, etc. The movie makes you connect the dots, without having to spoon feed you everything. Like The Batman said above, it's not your typical origin movie that holds your hands like STM or BB.

Well, but there is. This Bruce Wayne acts like a traumatized guy, he finds it difficult to create and establish deep ties with people. He wants to be someone that helps people (charity party) but he feels uncomfortable being a public figure.

The only thing that the movie lacked of, in terms of character development, was verbally explai9ning to the audie4nmce everything so they wouldn't get lost.

Before meeting Napier he was with two guys at the beginning of the movie, two guys who could have been easily killed and no one would miss them. And he didn't kill them.

Then you have Napier in their first encounter. Napier was about to fall and guess who went to save him? Yes, Batman did not kill until the moment came to save the city or these criminals. And of course there was this personal grudge between him and Joker (his parents' killer).

It's all there, in the movie.

So you can't deal with something remotely contradictory as the signal of a troubled person's behavior? Yes, there are two ideas there, like many others, that won't meet. Contradictory behavior is barely something new. What's the problem with this? Beats me. Inner conflict is many times the fuel of good characters and stories.

I always thought the first scene did imply he was a killer since one of the muggers believe that Johnny Gobbs was knocked off a roof by Batman, rather than just killing himself by taking a walk off a roof.
