LOL, yeah Indy 4 is the worst one, but it's still good. Just shows how great the series is.

But that doesn't mean it's good. I'm pretty sure he wasn't intending to be as funny as he is.

Hardy is also entertaining and also genuinely better, IMO, in Lawless. You've still got the weird Hardy affectations--lurching around in a gigantic hat and cardigan sweaters, chomping on a cigar, and talking like Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain--but it works better than his Bane, IMO.
When I say this, it's not to be an ass, but since you mention voices, I admit that I stopped watching Hannibal partly because I can't understand what Mads is saying half the time.

I'm actually not, the first half was a great approach of how things moved on and changed...and then everything went back to Raiders-lite after Marion showed up.

I said this only a couple of pages ago, but since it's come up: I think they're really repetitious and boring. Aside from some of the third one with Ford and Connery together.

Get Jones into a situation > run and jump around > play theme music > get out of situation > travel > repeat... over and over and over.

Boring.

That's got to be the most ridiculous oversimplification I've ever seen.

"Surprisingly accurate" does not go with oversimplification. You could slap that diagnosis or something similar on any movie and call it "boring and repititious."

The Dark Knight Rises drags around the middle section.

It's great until Bruce gets crippled, then it gets kind of sluggish and meandering.

Which is exactly why I changed that word. Do you have an actual rebuttal to bring to this, or...?

I don't know, sort of a broad area, and most of the ones I've seen over the last couple of years have been CBM's/sci-fi/Bond. I've only seen the first two F&F movies, for instance (first one meh, second one poo).

Throw a couple of examples at me?

I was only asking that because a lot of Blockbusters use that "Indy" formula.

Oh, they sure would. A friend first showed me the beginning of Raiders, and I loved it, so I borrowed it and then... I don't know why the Indy movies specifically didn't work for me, but after the first few action scenes where it doesn't really feel like character is being developed throughout, and the music starts going again, I just think... "Ugh, stop".

Die Hard, for instance. It throws him into various situations and he gets out of them, but over the course of them and the connective tissue, you can see and feel him being worn down, pushed into corners, the villains altering there plans, the tension with Holly being in the room with Hans. All that stuff.

I don't feel that with IJ.

You're thinking of The Last Crusade.

I actually find the last 20 minutes of Skull to be amazingly fun. It's one thing after another...chase in the jungle, sword fight, fist fight, killer ants, waterfalls, temples, natives, booby traps, aliens....it's pure pulpy goodness and pure Indy. I'll say it again....Indy 4 rocks.

Because Indy isn't trying to do that. It's a totally different tone. . And Indy has an arc in each film, the narratives just aren't hinged on them.

It's a lot of fans favorites for reason I don't know why. I posted my thoughts on it elsewhere and I'm not trying to change your mind or anything but it's essentially a remake of Raiders. It is literally the same film with a different MacGuffin. A tamer remake with the lamest villain and female role of the series. Say what you will about Willie, at least she has personality. People rag on Skull for being too jokey wen Crusade was just as jokey long before. If not for the stroke of genius that is the Ford/Connery duo and the tank battle Crusade would be wholly average imo.

Of course, doesn't mean it should rely as heavily on the spectacle while not really having anything but barebones character work.

I'll ask everybody (not you, just in case) to keep in mind what this thread is for, too, since I know these movies are quite beloved.

Are you kidding me? It is an oversimplification. People getting into situations, moving around, music plays, people get out of situations. Welcome to 99% of movies ever made.

And a lot of those try a little harder to have something other than superficial characters doing those things. Which is what I like. I don't need much, but...

Do you have anything more to say about the actual movies?
